WASHINGTON — Bob Dylan. Yo-Yo Ma. Sheryl Crow. Jay-Z. These aren't musical acts in a summer concert series: They're artists featured on Barack Obama's iPod.

"I have pretty eclectic tastes," the Democratic presidential contender said in an interview to be published in Friday's issue of Rolling Stone.

Growing up in the '70s, Obama said, he listened to the Rolling Stones, Elton John and Earth, Wind & Fire. Stevie Wonder is his musical hero from the era. The Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tops his favorites from the band.

The Illinois senator's playlist contains these musicians, along with about 30 songs from Dylan and the singer's "Blood on the Tracks" album. Jazz legends Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker are also in the mix.

"Actually, one of my favorites during the political season is 'Maggie's Farm,'" Obama said of one of Dylan's tracks. "It speaks to me as I listen to some of the political rhetoric."

In the song, Dylan sings about trying be himself, "but everybody wants you to be just like them."

Several musicians on Obama's iPod support his bid for the White House, including Bruce Springsteen. Earlier this month, Dylan told a British newspaper that he believes Obama is redefining politics in the United States and could deliver change to a nation in upheaval.

"I've got to say, having both Dylan and Bruce Springsteen say kind words about you is pretty remarkable," Obama said. "Those guys are icons."

Obama said he hasn't met Springsteen, but the two have talked over the phone.

"Not only do I love Bruce's music, but I just love him as a person," Obama said. "He is a guy who has never lost track of his roots, who knows who he is, who has never put on a front."

And did he address him as the Boss?

"You've got to," the candidate said.

Asked what he thought of rap, Obama said the genre has broken down barriers within the music world, though he's concerned about his daughters _ Malia, 9, and Sasha, 7 _ listening to it.

"I am troubled sometimes by the misogyny and materialism of a lot of rap lyrics," he said, "but I think the genius of the art form has shifted the culture and helped to desegregate music."

He said hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and rappers Jay-Z and Ludacris were "great talents and great businessmen."

"It would be nice if I could have my daughters listen to their music without me worrying that they were getting bad images of themselves," he added.

Obama appears on the cover of the magazine, which endorsed him for president in March.

How true that is. That's why I never liked my kids to listen to rap. It seemed so demeaning to girls and thuggish to boys. I like that he considers all types of music and not stuck into one genre.

Yeah, my blood’s so mad feels like coagulatin’
I’m sitting here just contemplatin’
I can’t twist the truth, it knows no regulation.
Handful of senators don’t pass legislation
And marches alone can’t bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin’
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin’

And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you don’t believe
We’re on the eve
of destruction.

I wish he'd said that Dylan bores him, Springsteen is a sellout, and the last great album in his opinion was "Never Mind the Bollocks." Oh, wait, that's me. Nevermind.

Just curious. What makes Springsteen a "sellout", besides his ticket sales? His last album was banned by Clear Channel stations because of his antiwar song "The Last To Die" , which, in my mind, gives him lots of cred.

This discussion reminds me of my teenage years and the peer pressure to be into cool artists rather than just listening to the music you really liked. If he had the Spice Girls and the Backstreet Boys on there as well ... that would be OK too.

He HAS to be ok if he listens to dylan.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

eclectic? ECLECTIC? you could not possibly get more mainstream . that is the most down the middle, noncontroversial, dare i say banal flash index i have ever seen. axelrod must have loaded it.

eclectic
adj : selecting what seems best of various styles or ideas.

Obama's selections are not avant-garde or cutting-edge but since they represent a variety of styles and genres they are eclectic.

The RANGE of "various styles or ideas" is pretty damn narrow; nothing that hasn't been played to death on commercial FM radio for the last 30 years or so.

It's strictly a Clear Channel playlist ... and a pretty narrow one at that. There's no country, no Do Wap, no 60s soul or Motown, no disco, no techno ... no odd little ditties, one hit wonders, grunge, heavy metal; nothing just plain quirky or anything not afflicted with terminal BLAHS. There's not a thing on that list your parents could object to, no matter how old or young you are.

Elton John? How many different versions of "Candle in the Wind" do you actually need?

what, did you really expect him to say that he was totally into nine inch nails? or maybe obama was a raver in the 90's. that scene was big here in chicago- glowstick obama. or if obama was one of the original members of wu tang.

unfortunately, i have to say i did not expect him to show any open-ness to challeging current artists like nas (heroes just dropped); the game (just dropped LAX), m83 (summer is youth just out), or even coldplay's new release. i mean i don't oppose him for that or anything. but last winter i could have wondered if he wasn't maybe listening to talib kweli or nas. i wasn't wondering that when this playlist came out.

Obviously you have no idea what 'eclectic' means.

Unless you think that rap, old-school rock, modern alternative, and classical all qualify as being part of the same genre of music.

To put it another way (let me simplify it for you), saying his tastes are eclectic doesn't mean that he doesn't like mainstream music, it means that he likes a variety of *types* of music.

Find something else to complain about now, thank you.

thank you for illuminating my point by missing it. it is not an eclectic list because it doesn't include much current music. it is weighted toward musicians of at least ten to -mostly forty years ago.
so it doesn't represent different periods of time, eclectically
i understand your zeal in defending obama; but there is something very banal about this. to me- jay z, bob dylan, yo-yo ma, and sheryl crow are safe average artists (like elton john has become) that are now really conservative social influences. elder statesman who would be very comfortable on the white-house lawn, where i'm sure they will all be soon. that's ok. but it's another way they are not "eclectic' as to influence.

so i have no wish to insult you; just saying "eclectic" need not apply only to genre.

Honestly, who gives a rats ass what any political candidate listens to on their iPod, MP3 Player, CD or gramaphone. Is that what we really use as the basis for our decisions in the voting booth? If it is, then we are more troubled then I first thought possible.
