Dynamic Tower

NEW YORK -- An Italian architect said he is poised to start construction on a new skyscraper in Dubai that will be "the world's first building in motion," an 80-story tower with revolving floors that give it an ever-shifting shape.

The spinning floors, hung like rings around an immobile cement core, would offer residents a constantly changing view of the Persian Gulf and the city's futuristic skyline.

A few penthouse villas would spin on command using a voice-activated computer. The motion of the rest of the building would be choreographed in patterns that could be altered over time.

Speaking at a news conference in New York on Tuesday, the building's designer, David Fisher, declared that his tower will revolutionize the way skyscrapers are made -- a claim that might strike some as excessively bold.

There is absolutely ZERO chance that this building will be built. It appears to be an exercise in desktop 3D animation, and an effective PR campaign waged by an architect who has never designed a skyscraper before. Nothing to see here, looks like an interesting distraction, and I highly doubt it will be constructed and function as described within the next two years.

Look at everything Dubai has built over the last 15 years. If they want to, they will. It will probably have defects and bugs galore, but it will most likely be built.

There ought to be a rehab center for architects. They could design it in the shape of a giant ego.

Well the world pays $150 per barrel and Dubai gets a spinning skyscraper. Seems like a fair tradeoff (not).

I am a bit skeptical about the engineering challenges, particularly in light of the promoter's limited credentials. It is also a little embarrasihng. How many families can be fed with the energy used to spin your apartment aroun

Hahahahaha, we've given so much of our money to these damned Beddous that they hardly know what to do with all of it! Between this building, the multi-billion multi-storey shopping mall they call the Airport in Dubai, and the artificial indoor ski slope they have there complete with artificial snow, now we know who's been getting fat off of our toil. Get rid of Bush and his ilk who rob us to make themselves and these rotten oil sheikhs richer. As the son of a Pakistani man and a woman from Alabama, I feel these scumbags are shafing both sides of my family!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oil revenues account for just under 5% of Dubai's GDP. Inform yourself before spouting off on your keyboard.

Wow, what a waste of energy. How the hell are they going to 'power' the machinery that is going to revolve each floor around the axis? A colossal waste - the opposite of a 'green building.'

And you wondered what your gas money was being spent on.

This is what $4 a gallon will get you. What will they come up with when it is $5

Oil revenues account for just under 5% of Dubai's GDP. Be informed. Dubai very wisely invested its oil money years ago to move away from being a state dependent on oil revenues, and their effort was extremely successful. Don't lump them in with Saudi Arabia. Use your head and learn about the world.

Very impressive. Now what, besides investments in the things that others produce, does the other 95% of Dubai's GDP consist of? Would you kindly list the things that Dubai has designed, manufactures and produces. Please make it a comprehensive list and if you run out of space here, make note of it, and I will post my e-mail addy so you can complete the list for me (provided I have enough bandwidth to accomodate it all) And if I may be specific, I am referring to products designed, manufactured and produced by Dubaians, not by foreign firms operating in Dubai. Thank you for your time.

They came up with this before gas was $4 a gallon. Oil revenues are only 7% of their GDP so think again.

How would you like to sleep while being moved back and forth, up and down all night. This is an interesting concept but silly. It will be exciting initially but there after will be just be uncomfortable.

Yeah, there was a day when stuff like that was done in America or by Americans. Now, American specializes in consumer durables manufactured overseas and hamburgers.

Well, Americans who can hardly buy gas to get to work and back - here is where our petro dollars are going. We have made these Arab countries swim in American dollars. It's time to get off these damned fossil fuels even if it costs more at the outset. Then let these countries swim in their oil instead of our hard earned money.

Repeat after me: Dubai is not an oil-dependent state. Petroleum revenues account for just under 5% of Dubai's GDP. Inform yourself.

BrooklynIndy,

There are time, as much as I like this site, that it is like an echo chamber. It just goes to prove that the right doesn't have a monopoly on reactionary thoughts.

Why is this so important to you? Are you an eccentric? A lobbyist for Dubai? Who the h cares? It's gone atopical anyway. Let's get back to hideous architecture. We have a bizarro stalagmite here in Philadelphia (though it lacks the ability to 'spin'), with more on the way. The out-of-plumb exterior wall is now de riguer in commercial architecture. As the oneupsmanship amongst architects progresses, the skyline will get ever more weird and unsightly. Architects will compete to demonstrate that "Yes, it can be done." The sheeple will follow along in awe, never asking "Why would anyone in their right mind want it to be done?" I believe that outrageous gasoline and fuel oil prices will end the era of the McMansion in the suburbs. What will save our cities?
