Dynamic Tower

NEW YORK -- An Italian architect said he is poised to start construction on a new skyscraper in Dubai that will be "the world's first building in motion," an 80-story tower with revolving floors that give it an ever-shifting shape.

The spinning floors, hung like rings around an immobile cement core, would offer residents a constantly changing view of the Persian Gulf and the city's futuristic skyline.

A few penthouse villas would spin on command using a voice-activated computer. The motion of the rest of the building would be choreographed in patterns that could be altered over time.

Speaking at a news conference in New York on Tuesday, the building's designer, David Fisher, declared that his tower will revolutionize the way skyscrapers are made -- a claim that might strike some as excessively bold.

Conceptually speaking 'towers' no landscape-ing sensation is coming from architects like a few hundred feet laid out hillock with a artificial rainforest ...but any piece of asignment/employement is blessing ....even sleeping in tea cup like penthousdes and revolving rooftop floors......i should be visiting UAE this season...before flying to west to face the rotten 'jews'/'secularists' world that just wont stop operating nuisance and follery allover the world...

I think they should name it, the Cosmic Utensil after that wonderful thought from Frank Zappa's "Packard Goose":

"If you're mind is pretensile,
You can have yourself a squat on the Cosmic Utensil,
Spin until you rot on the Cosmic Utensil!"

So vainglorious.

I wonder if they will have the courtesy to name one of those towers,"US Tower". Hell, after all the money we've sent over there,it's the least they can do.

I was there last July and it is hard to believe the growth, the energy, the positive, can-do way of getting the impossible built. The many different nationalities of workers that are eager for the future in such an upbeat way........then I come back to the US and read the doom and gloom on Huffpo.

Yeah, their "can do" attitude included several of their wonderful, enlightened citizens downing our towers in a Wahabi frenzy. F#@$ Saudi Arabia. It is Bush's lowest hour when he appeased that terrorist state.

And tell them to stop sending money to bombers.

Hope the next administration grows a spine.

Please check your map - Dubai is not in Saudi Arabia, it's in the United Arab Emirates.

..........so much oil money.....so much oil money.......what to do with it.....what to do with it! If you notice......with all this money pouring in........not a single cent is spent on ways to achieve oil independence. Dubai should be a hotbed of alternate energy scientists and and sponsor of new energy alternatives.

The US becoming energy independent does not help the finances of oil exporting countries. The Dubai government is reportedly spending all that money to turn Dubai into a tourist destination to keep its economy going after its oil fields are expected to run dry in a decade or two. Besides, the rotating tower commissioned to be built is said to have a generator built into the central core. As the floors rotate, the building is expected to generate electricity.

hahah DUNCE! Dubai doesnt run off oil money...but clearly they're building enough real estate and tourism revenue to think of alternative energy sources...I'll tell you when I go in December ;)

Till then, shouldn't we be more concerned about false promises about energy today? In America?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:02 AM on 06/26/2008

I don't get these lazy oilrabs. Sharif! Alternative energy!. Ride camel to that technology or you'll be train in "train vs. plane".

For living in the desert they sure take the short view.

Dubai = the tent ,flapjack, & shovel sellers, of the Gold rush. They made more money than the
gold miners!
That tower has been my worst nightmare for all my 69 years.
When I had to meet a diinner date in the rotating restaurant in Dallas, I needed an escort ( elevator operrater to hold my hand when I stepped off)

I think some individual homes are already designed and engineered to rotate throughout the day to take advantage of the sun's trajectory in the sky. What's next? A residential skyscraper in the form of giant rotating ferris wheel? Each huge gondola is its own apartment. Everyone shares in the penthouse views. The big drawback is that you'll wait half an hour to get in or out,

to people who say it's all because of 'our' oil money; UAE is the 8th oil producing country, way behind Saudi Arabia, Russia and Iran, yet none of them has half the city of Dubai. It has less to do with oil and more to do with economic and political stability, Dubai is THE economic center of the Middle East, and they had to give up any political role to gain this status, so stop hating and start 'admiring'.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:34 AM on 06/26/2008

..

It's only the economic center because the US is pouring its Defense Dept money in there. We have our largest base there.

as much as you'd love to attribute the success in Dubai to US, in any way, shape or form...you simply need a reality check, the world has moved on, America must now catch up.

While it's true that UAE is not a big oil producing country, it is the money-laundering, racketeering capital of the world. And yes, the people who are working on these insanely ambitious construction projects are "eager" to do so, but that's because most of them live in abject poverty. They'll do whatever it takes to stay fed. Do you know how very little they make for their labor? And like another poster said, many of them have died in workplace accidents in the unsafe rush-rush conditions of these projects. Apparently, UAE doesn't have an organization like OSHA to look out for their welfare.

Sure, it's fascinating to watch them build man-made islands and wacky skyscrapers, but I can't help feeling that it won't be long before the walls come tumbling down and a HUGE number of people are killed by one of these unnatural nutball convolutions of theirs. One earthquake and it's all over.

earthquakes don't just 'happen', if the area is known for natural distastes none of this would have been built. also they have relatively the same number of immigrant workers pouring in as there is in the US, but with a larger chance of getting a job (and a lesser chance of being abused by anti-immigration nuts).

as for workplace accidents, they can only be measured against the number of high-risk projects currently being built, don't take statistics at face value, i do agree that they need higher safety standards than the rest of the world, however, due to the scale of their projects. but simply discrediting Dubai by claiming they use "slave labor" is just preposterous.
