Olmert Agrees To Hold Early Primaries
The embattled prime minister of Israel, Ehud Olmert, agreed on Wednesday to hold primaries in his centrist Kadima Party by late September, averting a looming political crisis and gaining a few months' reprieve for himself and his governing coalition -- but also paving the way to his possible ouster before the end of the year.
The agreement, reached in overnight talks between Kadima and its main coalition partner, the Labor Party, led to the suspension of a bill that could have dissolved the current Parliament and led to early general elections. It had been scheduled for preliminary reading on Wednesday.
