Obama Downplays Scarlett Johansson Emails

Scarlett Johansson, a big supporter of Barack Obama, recently gushed that she frequently trades emails with the presidential candidate. Obama, however, is downplaying the notion that he walks in such lofty circles:

As he headed to a Hollywood fundraiser, Sen. Barack Obama downplayed the idea that he hobnobs with actress Scarlett Johansson...

Put two and two together here:

Rove wants to paste Obama as a country club elite, "with a beautiful girl on his arm".

When he does this, he wants you to imagine a black man with a white 'country club' girl: the last bastion of rabid white racism is black man with a white girl.

Scarlett, of Swedish decent, fits the bill perfectly. The dark-right wing-nuts will do what they can to pose Obama and Johansson as a psuedo-couple. Its to provoke a racist reaction against Obama. You can expect to hear more about this on Fox, they love to promote this kind of crap.

I feel bad for Scarlett. From what I understand, she is a caring intelligent young woman who has been involved with Oxfam and a number of worthy causes. Her being excited about Obama-- who he is and what he stands for is understandable...even if she is smitten, so are many many other people. Because she's a young, beautiful female movie star, any email communication she might have with Obama automatically "has to be" illicit. If they were indeed communicating, I wish Obama would stand up for it and bring it into the light. Otherwise, he's allowing Ms. Johansson to be unfairly demeaned and pandering to innuendo and the dismissive way women are treated.

Why do you "feel sorry for Scarlett?" Obama did not "dismiss" her. I saw this coming when Scarlett first came out with this emailing business. She is a good actress and I like her tremendously but I felt that it was inappropriate for her to speak about their relationship as if they were buddies. It wasn't appropriate because he's a married man. I then saw this being laughed at on Olbermann (several days in a row), Hardball, etc. It was wrong of the talking heads to treat this story the way they did, no doubt about that. Even so, I think Obama HAD to distance himself from this sort of thing - we all know the smear machine that exists on the right so why give them any ammunition whatsoever? Have we not seen what the repubs can do when they have absolutely nothing?? Ask John Kerry about that.

My sense is it was an innocent mistake though a bit naive. And I do understand that he needs to distance himself, but I think he could have done it more gracefully, which he is so capable of. I guess what bothered me started with Obermann's snide remarks about her (and I generally like Olbermann) but his comments about her seemed way out of line as I feel some of the posts here are.

Who want's to disappoint a beautiful woman like Scarlett? On the other hand Obama is being smart by being brutally pragmatic. Remember he is very likely to be the leader of the free world if he doesn't squash mis-perceptions ruthlessly, something like this can get way out of hand. Not to mention the fact that Michelle Obama would probably be none to pleased if they were e-mail buddies.
