The Supreme Court's ruling on Thursday that a ban on handguns in the District of Columbia was unconstitutional sent immediate ripples throughout the presidential campaign.

The Obama campaign came out with a statement in support, saying that the Court's ruling "will provide much-needed guidance to local jurisdictions across the country."

"As President, I will uphold the constitutional rights of law-abiding gun-owners, hunters, and sportsmen. I know that what works in Chicago may not work in Cheyenne. We can work together to enact common-sense laws, like closing the gun show loophole and improving our background check system, so that guns do not fall into the hands of terrorists or criminals. Today's decision reinforces that if we act responsibly, we can both protect the constitutional right to bear arms and keep our communities and our children safe."

Prior to the decision, Sen. Barack Obama sought to clarify a past statement in which he directly implied that he thought the D.C. handgun law to be constitutional. That remark, spokesman Bill Burton said, was inartful: the Senator had yet to develop a position on whether the law violated the Second Amendment.

Sen. John McCain, meanwhile, was quick out of the box in taking advantage of the Supreme Court's ruling, declaring it "a landmark victory" and blasting Obama for refusing "to join me in signing a bipartisan amicus brief" on the case. His campaign, in addition, hosted a conference call with reporters blasting Obama for being against Second Amendment rights and lacking a record of bipartisanship in tackling gun policy issues.

How much traction McCain will get out of the Supreme Court's ruling is an open-ended question. But it's important to note that Michael Bloomberg, one of the country's most prominent and sought-after Independents is leading a movement to crack down on hand-gun violence in cities. During a press conference today, the New York City mayor laid out talking points in support of the ruling that could provide a template for Obama.

"I haven't read the decision yet," said the mayor, who heads the coalition Mayors Against Gun Violence. "The court ruled something that we, our 225 mayors, believe is one of our tenets. You have a right under the Second Amendment to hold a pistol or a rifle. What you don't have the right to do is to hold one if you are a criminal. And the courts clearly ruled that reasonable regulation, which we believe would include all of the laws on the books in New York State and City... they ruled that reasonable regulations are permitted under the decision."

As for whether the decision would help persuade the mayor - out of concern for the future of the Supreme Court - to make an endorsement, Bloomberg demurred.

"I think the public has the two candidates," he said. "I want to hear what they have to say, I think people who vote based on who they think the president will appoint to the Supreme Court tend to be not pleased. Supreme Court justices are notorious for eventually doing things that the appointer didn't expect. It is difficult to determine how they will rule down the road."

Perhaps the most telling aspect of the early reaction to the Supreme Court decision is that it illustrates how non-partisan gun control debates have become. Sen. Russ Feingold, one of Congress' leading progressives, sent out this statement on the ruling:

I am very pleased the Supreme Court finally recognized that the 2nd Amendment protects an individual right to bear arms. This is an important decision for millions of law-abiding gun owners. Public safety must be ensured without depriving our citizens of their constitutional rights.

it is funny how people (many) on both the right and left seem to like certain amendments but not others. the argument about the "horribles" if we enforce the second amendment is really not very different from the argument about the horribles if we enforce habeas.

All this is extremely fascinating because if you are a police officer you are an officer of the courts. You as a police officer are protecting the ordinary citizens of your jurisdiction. You are a peace officer. Along comes the highest court in the land and says in effect - we the courts are not here to protect the citizens of any jurisdiction but are wish to give license to any damn fool to take a gun and do what they want., to not only disturb the peace but knock off any one getting in their way including officers of that court. So as a police officer I suppose you buckle up you gun, hunker down and hope to hell this is not your night.
Perhaps the only way to go at this problem is to say - yeah - have your guns but where in the constitution does it say you should have ammunition in you possession. I realize the responses that will say this is silly but so is the way we accept each incident where totally innocent people are gunned down, both singularly and recently in groups. It has got to the point where you hear the question - was it a record number? But to go back to the top - shouldn't the highest court be a peace officer? Whatever, this was certainly a mixed message.

Perhaps if Obama looked at Chicago's crime stats he would see that "What works in Chicago" actually doesn't.
I give him 5 flip flops for a stunning change of opinion though.

What stunning change of opinion? Obama has a long record of saying that he believed that the second ammendment confered an individual right to own a gun for self defense.

I guess some people on both the left and the right presumed that as a democrat he HAD to support the idea that the second ammendment only conferred a general right.

And the ruling specifically endorsed limits on who can own a handgun (specifically felons and the insane but potentially others) and on the kind of gun (specifically short barreled shotguns and machine guns)

Anyone who refuses to use a gun in the commission of a crime should go to jail. It's that simple.

If the 2nd amendment needed expansion or clarification, it is we the people who could have extended or clarified. We the people have the rights of the founded fathers; not the supreme court. In fact we the people could have introduced an additional amendment dealing exclusively with indiviual's right to bear arms independent of any militia business. This would have legalized the ownership and use of firearms. The supreme court has usurped our rights.

I like the Canadian system. It's like drivers' licensing: Want a handgun? Sure, pass a safety course, criminal record/mental health check, and licensing test proving you can responsibly handle and store a handgun without killing yourself or your kids. Then you get a gun license. After that, no 3-day waits, no background checks at the gun shop, just show your license and here's your gun. Oh, if your gun is stolen, you share responsibility for what it does in the hands of a criminal, since you left it somewhere where it could be stolen.

The Canucks are swimming in guns, but have an absurdly low gun death rate. Law-abiding, responsible gun owners can have guns, people without the license go to jail. Sounds like a reasonable municipal regulation to me.

McCain / Feingold happens to be the reason McCain should not get the NRA’s endorsement, the NRA spent years fighting this trampling of our 1st amendment rights. McCain has not been the solid 2nd amendment supporter he would like you to believe he is - he cosponsored legislation which could require registration of attendees at gun shows and even ban such shows. Add to this the barely passing “C” grade from the NRA in his last senate run in 04‘, the “F” grade the Gun Owners of America gives him today and reflect on the work he did in 2000 with Americans for Gun Safety, an anti-gun group with a deceiving name, and you get a very different picture than the one he wants us to see.
Bob Barr deserves the NRA endorsement.

Well I guess after all this time of fighting I'm going to have to get a gun. Not to protect myself from criminals, because I have never felt the need to before, but from all the other idiots who'll be rushing out to buy their guns. I hope to hell people are satisfied now we can all live in fear.

Yeah. Lets go with Strict Interpretation of the Original Intent of the Founding Fathers. Everyone has the right to own any arms that would have been available in 1789. Nothing later. (That takes care of AK-47s, machine guns, revolvers, automatics, and pretty much everything except muzzle loaders.)

Illegal gun sales are still rampant, in spite of the SC ruling. Put me down for a taser, preferably double barrelled.

and laws restricting the use of a gun in a crime are constitutional
Because the inequality is extreme inequality
posing the threat of death
the punishment for using a gun
in a crime is also extreme
in order to maintain constitutional equality
Th use of a gun in muirder is punishable by life imprisonment without parole
The use of a gun with injuries is punishable by 35 years imprisonment
The use of a gun without injurtyis punishable by twenty years imprisonment
The threat of a gun unseen whether real or pretend is punishable by fifteen years imprisonment.

...As usual, our citizenship is considered to be be the one and only sign of being a human being. Killed Iraq citizens (~100,000?) are never counted, never mentioned.
