Clinton

Sen. Hillary Clinton made her first public appearance as a surrogate for Barack Obama on Thursday, in the process made a strong case to the Latino-American audience to which she spoke that the man who vanquished her in the Democratic primary was now the best choice to be elected president.

Appearing before the National Association of Latino Elected & Appointed Officials (NALEO), Clinton did not even mention Obama's opponent, John McCain. Instead she laid out a comprehensive case for why the Illinois Democrat was best suited to advance the issues of the Latino community, in the process evoking her own campaign experience.

"I know this was a hard fought primary campaign, and I am very grateful for the passion and determination of those who supported me," she said as an audience member screamed, "we love you Hillary!"

"But every issue you care about personally," she continued, "every issue your constituents care about and every issue NALEO is fighting for is really at risk. We cannot afford four more years of the same. It wouldn't be good for us. We have to chart a new course and we cannot do that without electing Senator Obama our next president."

The crowd was passionate in its approval. On several occasions cheers interrupted the Senator's roughly 15-minute speech. Nevertheless, Clinton seemed comfortable on the podium, only once appearing the least bit emotional over the defeat of her candidacy. The crowd, meanwhile, offered cheers at the mentioning of Obama's name, suggesting that the fissures created in the primary fight may be closer to being healed.

"I know Senator Obama," Clinton said. "I have served with him now for four years in the Senate I campaigned with him for 16 months on the campaign trail I have stood on the stage for 22 debates, but who is counting? ... In his own life he has lived the American dream and as a community organizer, state senator, and U.S. Senator he has worked to make that dream possible for others."

She went on: "Your passionate engagement moved our nation forward and I don't want to see that forgotten or overlooked I want to see participation by Latino voters continue to grow and more Hispanics join the ranks as elected members. I believe firmly the best way to continue this fight is to elect Barack Obama as our next president. The Latino community has felt the effects of the policies of the past eight years, president bush has set our nation backwards."

Clinton's appearance marks her reemergence on the campaign scene. In the Democratic primary, she racked up big wins over Obama among the Latino community. And with the Illinois Democrat hoping to contend in Western states like Nevada and Colorado her connection to that constituency will undoubtedly help.

Toward the end of the primary, Clinton's surrogates -- most notably Terry McAuliffe -- argued that Obama would struggle with Hispanic voters. But such predictions have, so far, turned out not to be true. A recent Gallup poll showed the Senator winning 62 percent of registered Latino voters nationwide, with McCain at 29 percent. His popularity level bests that of John Kerry during the 2004 election.

And Democrats clearly believe that McCain has a weakness on the topic of immigration, due in large part to his proclamation, made during the Republican primary, that he would abandon immigration reform unless it started with border security. One of the Senate's foremost Latinos, Robert Menendez, said McCain had "walked away" from the Latino community and is not a "person of principle" during an interview with the Huffington Post. And, preceding Clinton at the NALEAO conference, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid offered that, "[McCain's] new position on immigration reform is so extreme, it has won him the endorsement of Tom Tancredo," the hard-lined anti-immigration representative from Colorado.

Both Senators Obama and McCain are scheduled to address the NALAEO Conference on Saturday. Since ending her bid for the Democratic nomination, Clinton had spent several weeks away from the media spotlight. On Wednesday she returned to Capitol Hill and this evening she and Obama will appear at a joint fundraiser designed to help retire her campaign debt.

This isn't about Obama, she would have to register as an independent which may not work if its to late and she this, it may hurt her on the next go round. Plus there is already someone running on the ind ticket She would lose 90% of the 18 mil voters because folks are more die hard Demthan you may realize. Lets help Hil help Obama now and then we can help Hil next time. Hil will be happy for this.

You are right. This country is so ready for a viable 3rd party, the Democrats have blown it this time around. Unfortunately it is late in the year to really get a third party going, but I bet 18 million people would be a good start for that to happen in 2012. This two party system needs to retire to a hospice and die with dignity. I'm not ready to accept the chicanery of the Democratic party which has betrayed 50% of its members.

With one I saw substance, the other flair. I prefer substance, and I think our country needs that to clean up Jr.'s mess. I am of your opinion........but hopefully people will come to their senses, and see what is important in this perilous time in our country. Yes, BO, there is the "extreme urgency of now" and for me, you don't fill the bill.

"Your candidate could have done so much to address sexism and advocate for women throughout her campaign, but she chose not to do so. She could have shut the pundits down, but she chose not to do so. She, of 'testicular fortitude', who never said a peep after that comment was made, had the perfect opportunity to call out all the sexists and point out the differences between the leadership of men and women. She said nothing."

Seriously? What rock have you been living under? Every time she tried to bring up sexism in the MSM or elsewhere, people said she was whining or playing the gender card. I suppose the person on this thread who just said "iron my shirt" was being cute and playful right? And even HuffPo carried that hateful ad for the HRC nutcracker! These things should have been addressed by Obama, Dem leaders and the DNC. Now that would be change AND leadership we could believe in! But no...It was left to well-known feminists to comment, and they were subjected to ridicule.

HRC is doing what she promised to do. Now you damn Obamamaniacs should show her and her supporters some respect. Remember she won half of all Dem votes cast!

I could not agree with your sentiments more. I only wish I could put them as well as you did. I am still on the "write her in" plan. She is the best man for the job and she continues to show it everyday!

This is politics, it can be a nasty business. Now that the primary is over and BO and HRC seem to be getting along why can't some of you people do the same? For God's sake - GROW THE HELL UP!

It's not about immaturity- it's about anger and fairness in an environment where women once again get the wrong end of the stick. Many of us aren't saying anything bad about BO, what were saying is that Hllarey Clinton is the better of the two.

Why do we have hate groups "hating" on a bi-racial man running for President of the United States of America? Emphasize is on the ...UNITED... States of America. Are we fooling the world when we keep reminding them that we the U.S.A. are the greatest country in the World? Are we allowed and justified to invade other countries to bring them our DEMOCRACY and tell them how to run their governments? Are we justified in placing embargos on certain foreign countries? What is really going on in the U.S. of A..? I'll tell you.. the hate groups are really upset because of our Bad Economy ... Gas Prices... Unemployment... Unemployed College Grads.. HealthCare... Childcare... Maternity Leave... Vacation Days... Sick Days... Those are issues which need to be resolved in this U.S. of A. So hate groups keep on growing... DUMMMMM ASSES.

Why not hate on all the engineers who designed those levis .. that give out to rising waters? So hate groups keep on growing ... DUMMMMM ASSES.

Some of you have got to be kidding when you still dream about Hillary for VP. Could you seriously imagine the Obamas living upstairs, and Bill Clinton plotting away downstairs? But seriously, this business of Bill refusing to endorse Obama is getting to be ominous and scary.

Why should Obama help pay off Hillary's campaign debt? She continued her campaign long after it was clear she wasn't going to win, and spent most of that time trumpeting that Obama was not fit to lead the country - only she or McCain were. The Democrats are uniting on their own, and Obama doesn't need her few embittered supporters who say they will switch to McCain. Obama doesn't need her, and the Clintons need to get over the fact that they LOST. Demands by the Clintons should be put where they belong - in the trash. They are history now, they knew what they were doing, and should pay their own debts.

You don't understand the campaign financing, I think. HRC and Obama are going to share their big donor lists. Obama's big $ donors are maxed out and can't give anymore money to him, but they can donate to HRC. Her donors can't give anymore money to her, or they would gladly pay her campaign debt off. So he is not actually giving her any of his campaign money, but with her list of donors he stands to get lots of big bucks, if they choose to support him. Likewise his big donors will give her enough to pay off her campaign debt if they choose. He stands to get more out of this swap then she does. Did you think all you small Internet contributors would be paying any of her debt.........? I know he has given the impression that his campaign has been financed by small contributions from people like you on the net, but he has his big donors, many who bundle funds for him, that have given him BIG bucks. It all comes down to large donors, who might expect favors for their contributions. If you O's didn't understand that, well then, you are naive.

"Demands by the Clintons should be put where they belong - in the trash. They are history now, they knew what they were doing, and should pay their own debts."

BTW; this show you O's are not only naive, you are sore winners. And you don't know WTF you are talking about.

Based on all the negative, sexist remarks made about Clinton by the Obama suckers on this website, I'm convinced I was correct in supporting Hillary Clinton from day-one. And no, even if Hillary divorced Bill and married Obama today, I would never support the MAN who once again, put women at the back of the bus. My disgust towards Obama and the sexist jerks on the left and the right make me sick.
The only thing this presidential primary race has shown me is that racism is a dying disease, but sexism is alive and well and since I'm a woman, it's become extremely personal.
I dislike Republicans, but I hate progressives who fight ever so hard against racism while turning a blind eye to sexism. Discrimination is discrimination which is why I joined the ACLU many years ago.
No, I won't vote for Obama. NOT EVER.

You are claiming instances of sexism by Obama supporters - ok, you might be right about that (although I SERIOUSLY doubt it) but those are his SUPPORTERS, that's not Obama himself. Please cite instances of your allegations of sexism on Obama's part. I'm VERY interested to know what exactly he said about Senator Clinton or women in general.
Can you HONESTLY sit there and spew those untruths about sexism being more alive and well than racism when you have a few things going against what you are claiming:
1) I seem to recall someone saying something along the lines of "hardworking, WHITE americans" hint: it wasn't Obama.
2) The people who claimed they would support Hillary did so because they would never support a black man (google anything on West Virginia, Pennsylvania, etc)
3) Obama was raised by his mother and grandmother, he is married to a successful woman of her own right and he has 2 young daughters....

So, that blows your whole argument out of the water.

PS I'm a woman and an Obama supporter all the way.

Fine. Truly that's your right!

I cannot remember Obama "putting any woman at the back of any bus!!" Obama has and continues to be most respectful of Hillary ... too much for me! If you feel by Hillary's very hard loss, that she has been "put at the back of the bus" ... that's something else!

Obama "married" to Hillary ... geez, she'd have been one lucky woman! Just look how apparent Obama treats his wife and children ... yeppers, Hillary would be one lucky woman. So much for Bill!! Oh, maybe that's who you're thinking of ... that ill-treatment oof Hillary! O had nothing to do with that!! But you know that don't ya!!

Mc's your option, you'll be sorrrrrrrrry!

After the primary ended, she cries sexism, and everybody has a fit. To me, this is either sour grapes or some weak justification for the loss. Either way, I lost respect for her for not sticking up for all women all the way along.

Son't worry honey, you are going to be ok. And for me and maybe 3 million others---well we are going to make the DNC pay by moving on. Oh, and by the way, there are many of us over 40, so we are not going to try and hold the line on pro-choice anymore, since so many of us did that for all those gals that seem to think feminism is just a word. If they lose their rights going forward, then so be it. They can try and work for 30 years of pay, and equalness, and maybe then they will understand what it means to have the DNC and media crap all over them, as women. No problem, just call me bitter.

Hey Nellie,

Most Clinton supporters are not addicted to anger "anymore", because they have no choice... Clinton Lost! It was not Baracks' fault that she is not the presumptive nominee at this moment. Her surrogates helped to run her campaign into the ground. Literally.. into the ground. I have learned a long time ago to take heed when you deal with "fast-talkers" like Terry McCauliffe. Terry brings a smile to my face... because he was the worst surrogate next to Penn. She surrounded herself with JOKERS.

Now, that said, I am helping to pay off her debt. That ofcourse, also puts a smile on my face... I could not ever have imagined saying that about a CLINTON!

She would have relished to see him suck it up and support her if the tables were turned.

I acknowledge her role must be tough for her now. Every person who runs in a primary and loses sucks it up and supports the winner, but I've never heard so much complaining and expressions of praise and sympathy over it. That seems sexist to me, cutting her so much more slack than normal.
