Clinton

Sen. Hillary Clinton made her first public appearance as a surrogate for Barack Obama on Thursday, in the process made a strong case to the Latino-American audience to which she spoke that the man who vanquished her in the Democratic primary was now the best choice to be elected president.

Appearing before the National Association of Latino Elected & Appointed Officials (NALEO), Clinton did not even mention Obama's opponent, John McCain. Instead she laid out a comprehensive case for why the Illinois Democrat was best suited to advance the issues of the Latino community, in the process evoking her own campaign experience.

"I know this was a hard fought primary campaign, and I am very grateful for the passion and determination of those who supported me," she said as an audience member screamed, "we love you Hillary!"

"But every issue you care about personally," she continued, "every issue your constituents care about and every issue NALEO is fighting for is really at risk. We cannot afford four more years of the same. It wouldn't be good for us. We have to chart a new course and we cannot do that without electing Senator Obama our next president."

The crowd was passionate in its approval. On several occasions cheers interrupted the Senator's roughly 15-minute speech. Nevertheless, Clinton seemed comfortable on the podium, only once appearing the least bit emotional over the defeat of her candidacy. The crowd, meanwhile, offered cheers at the mentioning of Obama's name, suggesting that the fissures created in the primary fight may be closer to being healed.

"I know Senator Obama," Clinton said. "I have served with him now for four years in the Senate I campaigned with him for 16 months on the campaign trail I have stood on the stage for 22 debates, but who is counting? ... In his own life he has lived the American dream and as a community organizer, state senator, and U.S. Senator he has worked to make that dream possible for others."

She went on: "Your passionate engagement moved our nation forward and I don't want to see that forgotten or overlooked I want to see participation by Latino voters continue to grow and more Hispanics join the ranks as elected members. I believe firmly the best way to continue this fight is to elect Barack Obama as our next president. The Latino community has felt the effects of the policies of the past eight years, president bush has set our nation backwards."

Clinton's appearance marks her reemergence on the campaign scene. In the Democratic primary, she racked up big wins over Obama among the Latino community. And with the Illinois Democrat hoping to contend in Western states like Nevada and Colorado her connection to that constituency will undoubtedly help.

Toward the end of the primary, Clinton's surrogates -- most notably Terry McAuliffe -- argued that Obama would struggle with Hispanic voters. But such predictions have, so far, turned out not to be true. A recent Gallup poll showed the Senator winning 62 percent of registered Latino voters nationwide, with McCain at 29 percent. His popularity level bests that of John Kerry during the 2004 election.

And Democrats clearly believe that McCain has a weakness on the topic of immigration, due in large part to his proclamation, made during the Republican primary, that he would abandon immigration reform unless it started with border security. One of the Senate's foremost Latinos, Robert Menendez, said McCain had "walked away" from the Latino community and is not a "person of principle" during an interview with the Huffington Post. And, preceding Clinton at the NALEAO conference, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid offered that, "[McCain's] new position on immigration reform is so extreme, it has won him the endorsement of Tom Tancredo," the hard-lined anti-immigration representative from Colorado.

Both Senators Obama and McCain are scheduled to address the NALAEO Conference on Saturday. Since ending her bid for the Democratic nomination, Clinton had spent several weeks away from the media spotlight. On Wednesday she returned to Capitol Hill and this evening she and Obama will appear at a joint fundraiser designed to help retire her campaign debt.

"We cannot afford four more years of the same."
That's the whole point of this election! We certainly need a new direction ... bring back the Constitution! Bring back a sense of social uplift that is reflected in the programs that the President will support. Get away from the neo-con vision of a bent and degraded British Empire and denounce the Unitary Presidency!

Good to see Hillary cleaning up her image!

He's doing very well. Why tempt fate? Why bring on the unnecessary baggage? I have heard excerpts from a speech she made this week and I'm not buying that she is loyal at all. It continues to be about her and the past. She has made many unwise decisions. She is not comitted to O's vision of change and it shows. Why would he want to jinx himself when he is doing so well?

Obama flip-flops so often it's hard to keep track of what he stands for on a day to day or week to week basis, he changes his mandates at the drop of a hat if it benefits him.
That's not the kind of candidate I'm looking for.
Maybe he doesn't stand for anything but Obama for president !!!
If that's the kind of CHANGE he's talking about - I'm NOT interested !!!!

I appreciate Hillarys support and hope the party will truly unite. I have one question for the diehard Hillary supporters, Why don't you donate to pay off Hillary debts? I think the majority of Hillary's supporters that are still posting negatives and whining are really repubs. These people are trying to divide, and could care less about Hillary or Obama. Ignore them!

That's baloney, if "a lot" of you had pitched in 5 bucks her debt would be paid. No, many of her supporters prefer to attack O but squeak when they walk.
18 million supporters, if a third of them pitched in 5 lousy dollars she would have 30 mil to pay off her debt. Her supporters are much different than O's.

Senator Obama leads by example. I think the message he is sending is very clear. All Good Democrats should chip in five bucks to help Senator Clinton, not just her supporters. Unity works both ways. I've been an Obama supporter from day one but I'm going to contribute to her now. She supports Barack and therefore she's one of us now. I'm not going to second guess her motives. I don't care about that. If she's helping the Obama campaign she is our friend and ally. We can all afford five bucks to help bury the hatchet and heal old wounds. It's time to come together for the good of the party and the good of the nation.

As always, Obama's actions speak louder than his words and that's quite an accomplishment!

Polls in swing states and many republican states showed Obama ahead, until they asked the same question if Clinton was on the ticket and lost ten points and the lead in nearly all the state.

So much for that ticket.

Obama needs to know that no one is going to take pop shots at him because they want the person behind him to be president. A guy like Joe Biden would raise hell to find the culprits and become more dangerous than Obama. Clinton would take their cash and it would be business as ususal.

There are only a few people honest enough to stoke fear in the minds of those corrupt dogs. Obama must protect himself. Hagel can never be the nominee after he handed the economy to China. There are people that stand to lose billions if Obama fixes the trade imbalance and doesn't let our economy slide into third world proportions. That was always the plan. The big corps are tired of paying their employees, having fair labor practices, not working children, and a forty hour work week. They are not going to lie down and watch Americans do well and cost their companies money overseas.

We need a warrior behind Barack. One that is honest enough to have his back. We all remember how Clark handled Bosnia. We need more clarity than that. Biden is the Only choice.

Independents don't like her and that is the group we need to win, but more importantly, it is the group we need to change the electoral map so we are not always sucking up to Ohio and Florida.

And then we need to change the primary system so we can stop sucking up to corn farmers in Iowa too. The all pretty much have to support ethanol to win the primary, which is now ot such a good idea what with the world starving and all.

Hillary Clinton has debt to pay off - we don't - so we won't be kissing up to Obama.
He was against the 2nd Amendment.
He voted NO to capping credit card skyrocketing interest rates.
He voted NO to the death penalty for child molesters.
I could go on and on but the list of his negatives is way too long.
We vote NO to Obama.

Credit card rates shouldn't be capped. They are based on market values. If people don't want high interest rates on their cards, they shouldn't get that card.

Capping any price merely leads to shortages. Once rates are capped, people will complain about the lack of available credit.

As for the death penalty, I agree with the SC which said that the death penalty should be reserved for crimes against the state and crimes where a life has been taken. Child molesters are psychologically ill people. The death penalty solves nothing in this case.

It also ignore the fact that many people are falsely accused of child molesting, which would lead to many innocent teachers being electrocuted on false pretenses.

You have some of your (cough, cough) facts wrong. No one is against an ammendment. The court has allowed gun controls in the past and in the crime-ridden inner cities, getting rid of all guns helps the community. Now sadly that can't be done, but Obama praised the decision yesterday.

AND he is for the DP for child-rape. I am against the DP but he is consistant on this one, it is in one of his books as well. In fact, child-rape is one of the very few instances that he believes in using the DP.

I love Hillary and I am glad to see that she is now being the person that I respect and admire. Hillary can help our country in so many ways but not in the VP position. Obama will have to pick a person with military experiece as VP, just to counter act the BS about mccain being a war hero(by the way I don't feel the old goat is or ever was a war hero) but if you listen to our corrupt media you believe the old man can walk on water. News Flash: just because he old enough to have seen jesus walk on water doesn't mean he can. I am so glad Obama is running, even though he isn't perfect and I don't agree with everything he say and does, he makes me proud. Once again the Clintons are doing what they do better than any else in the world:

SELLING INFLUENCE FOR CASH

Hillary and Bill will support Obama, IF he can come up with $22 million, at least half of which goes into their personal bank account. Classic Clinton self enrichment at public expense.

Why all of this drama? It's not about poor Hiilary saddled with an enormous debt. She and Bill could assume 100 percent of the campaign debt, pay off every one of the vendors, and still be MEGA MILLIONAIRES. $110 million less $22 milion = $88 million

Hillary indulged her ego and enriched her high paid cronies by continuing a flawed, divisive, doomed campaign for months and months. The expectation that American citizens, and the Democratic nominee OWE Hillary more dollars ot retire her debt is more Clinton style entitlment and arrogance.

Obama should say to the Clintons: thanks for any support you and your loyalists can give me, and forget them. Move on. The Clintons are part of the old political establishment we must move past.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:02 AM on 06/27/2008

Agree! Also, if her influence of "18 millions voters" is real, WHERE ARE THEY? Why don't they donate her with only two bucks each to wipe out her debts in a flash? Her influence is overrated and why the party gave her a special treatment as if to stroke her big ego? The Clintons' influence has passed with their dirty tactics in this race and their using it to bargain is unethical. Why doesn't she ask her supporters to donate to retire her debts instead of asking Obama as if he and his supporters owe her?

USELESS NOT CONSERVATIVE
Part Two

In democracy, all struggles are meant to resolve into further democracy. The same is true in economics.

There is no nation, when only one side is declared eligible to benefit by membership in it. One only joins an open society promising complete equality. Violate that, and the social contract collapses.

What the “right” always forgets is that, in the modern world, out of tyrannies and holocausts come humanists and revolutionaries WHO TAKE BACK WHAT BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE.

The people who do not understand the history that lies AHEAD in the twentieth century, and the vast importance of this on the world scale, should not be running policy, never mind starting wars.

Every act of arrogance by this “administration” is the source of yet another future terrorist attack upon us all. The world has no more room for pretenders to empire.

These people are worse than useless, but they are NOT conservative of our ideals, our nation, nor our lives.

The time of troubles is upon humanity again, as happened in the 14th century (plagues and wars), the second century (barbarians), at the rise of Babylon, and at the fall of Troy.

I urge the people of America to put their hands on the constitution. The exciting primary season has awakened many.

Every progressive will have his fifteen minutes of fame. Just wait your chance. Your eyes will open when it blossoms before you.

THE SHEEP HAVE LOOKED UP!

I cannot argue with one point.

The enthusiasm gap in this election is quite shocking. Rethuglicans have NOTHING good to say about McBush (even more than usual). I saw one poll where only 45% of Rethuglicans were even mildly excited about supporting McBush while 82% of people supporting 0bama were excited.

USELESS NOT CONSERVATIVE
Part One

It is useless to call for an end to personal attacks by republicans.

It is senseless to expect that vile racists won't have plenty to say over the next several years.

There is no point in telling republicans to properly and honestly address the issues facing the nation.

On this last item, this is because this "administration" is a large part of the problems behind these issues.

The economy is in decline BECAUSE the "administration" wasted trillions in Iraq.

The price of oil is sky high BECAUSE the "administration" destabilized the middle east.

The people of New Orleans drowned BECAUSE the means to save them had been conscripted to Iraq, or simply outright withheld.

There are more competent and knowledgeable people than I to detail the history of the criminality that goes under the name "republican", which has made us all pretty much forget what the word "conservative" used to mean.

If conservative really means, to safeguard the structure of the nation by protecting the constitution and the people, to work in the present with a view to the long term, to work with the world to see toward the benefit of us all, then it is plainly obvious that the republicans are no longer the conservatives.

Yes, they are the radicals, destabilizing our own society, raking the treasury into their own coffers, trying to break all our systems, cascading millions into debt and poverty, creating a corporate feudalism.

I pay a lot of taxes. If my taxes were to go to developing alternative fuels, providing decent public education for our children, and giving us a 21st century infrastructure, I'd be happy to pay more.

Sometimes if you need something, you gotta pay for it. Or do you expect Walmart to buy us new roads?

And Wal-Mart may not pay for roads, but, they do save those who shop there money that probably goes to pay higher fuel taxes, property taxes, federal taxes, state taxes, local taxes.

I read in an important document once that All men are created equal. I guess that only matters when the upper half of us income earners, pay 96% of the taxes.

Let's see, 50% of wage earners pay 90+% of the taxes, while the other 50% pay less than 10%. I guess all men aren't created equal after all.

I don't mind paying my equal share, but I shouldn't pay for a cowboy museum, or an artist who takes pictures of fingers inside other men. I'll pay for roads, and infrastructure. I'll pay for defense. I'll pay to lend a hand. But it is not my responsibility to pay for someone's health care, as well as my own. It is not my responsibility to pay for cable TV, and cell phones for those who live on welfare. My taxes are high enough, and it seems to only ones thinking I don't pay enough are the ones who pay little, if any taxes.

I really don't know why her "18 million voters" didn't give two dollars each to clear her debts? It showed they are not there, it 's just her spin as usual!

VP Stakes it is between Evan Bayh and Jim Webb with Joe Biden and Kathy Sebelius being the next tier.

I'm high on Evan Bayh with IN being close Bayh has a great background because he was a governor with executive experience and as a Senator has foreign policy experience. He also meshes with 0bama's message of working with a Hilllary supporter and bipartisanship by serving a red state. Bayh would also fit into 0bama's no drama mindset.

I think if the election comes down to a foreign policy election Jim Webb is the best pick. He's a little more outspoken and controversial but would deliver VA.

Joe Biden would be a no brainer if he just was not such of a loose cannon. It also hurts that he does not deliver a red or purple state for 0bama. But he is one of 0bama's strongest surrogates and has great foreign policy bona fides.

Kathleen Selebius is the most qualified woman VP candidate but 0bama runs the risk of ticking off women if her picks any woman besides Hilllary. She has great executive experience but little foreign policy experience.

Other long shots but great VP candidates.

Wesley Clarke
Chuck Hagel
Tim Kaine
Bill Richardson

BTW one of my favorite Democrats now is Robert Wexler.

I'm a woman and I'd LOVE to see Sebelius.

He's a good attack dog and very smart/well spoken!!

need someone like him to have O's back.

I'm also big on Debbie Wasserman Schultz. She is one tough cookie.

I'm not too excited about Biden as VP: I think his foreign policy bona fides make him personally known to a lot of key figures in Europe and elsewhere, which could be useful elsewhere in an Obama cabinet . . ..

Otherwise, I just hope the Veep candidate will be someone smart, decent, and as different from the current occupant of the office as possible. I guess a VP that helps deliver contested constituencies would be nice, too.
