NEW YORK — With a bruised forehead, Stephen Colbert has found a new cause celebre: fighting the glamorization of "face violence."

As he did after breaking his wrist last year, Colbert has transformed a real-life injury into a mock crusade. Colbert was injured Saturday, and while he's been cagey about the cause, he's made no attempt to hide the scarring between his eyebrows this week on "The Colbert Report."

In extreme close-up Monday, he detailed the wreckage: "What the hell is going on right here? What the hell did I do to myself on Saturday? I've got stitches up there and it looks like I'm growing a little map of Norway down the side of my face."

Watch:

Colbert has declined to say how the injury happened. (His publicist and Comedy Central also declined to comment.) Instead, he has said what's important is his new responsibility to fight "face violence" in Hollywood films.

Last June, Colbert broke his wrist while running around his set before the taping of a show. The comedian went on to wage a months-long fight for "wrist awareness" and widely circulated "WristStrong" bracelets for the cause. (Proceeds for the $1 bracelets have gone to the Yellow Ribbon Fund, a charity that assists injured service members and their families.)

This week, Colbert has joked that after the wrist injury, he pledged he would never break a fall with his hands.

Tuesday's guest, Will Smith, had a theory: "I think I know what happened to your face, `cause I can tell. Somebody kicked your ass, didn't they?"

Colbert has claimed it could have happened by smashing watermelons with his head or by "practicing for a walk-on role in Cirque du Soleil and overestimating the number of French Canadians my forehead would support."

I had injuries just like that when I wrecked my bike and went over the handlebars onto gravel.

And now speculation over what "really" caused his facial injury will make Steven Colbert the nation-wide subject of water cooler conversations, banter between local nightly news anchors as they sign off for the night, political talking heads attempting to add humor to their shows, late night talk host opening monologues and perhaps even one or two "lighter side" features on the various 24/7 cable news networks. The man is the Obama of political satire - a marketing genius.

It could be the indentation left by sunglasses pushed hard against his face by a deploying car airbag.

I was thinking hit in the face with a basketball. Who would want to admit he's too clumsy to catch a basketball. It's not like falling down on your wrist. Whatever it was....he was wearing glasses of some kind.

Looks like he tried to break someone's fist with the bridge of his nose.

It happens.

Who knows what media personalities are really like.

But Colbert seems to be one of the nicest people outside of his character. Even in character.

i don't see him stopping anyone fist.

On the other hand he has numerous children. Maybe he stopped one of their fists.

That happens also.

But I really want to know the truth. Not the truthiness.

That looks exactly like my face when one night, I had a couple of drinks, walked the dogs and on the way back in I tripped and broke the fall to my front steps with my face.

So, I'm gonna go with Stevie had a drink or two and took a fall on his front steps.

I'm finding this show too repetitive and totally ridiculous. It isn't funny anymore. I've had enough of the parallel universe Bill O'Reilly. I stopped watching a while ago and if it weren't for HuffPo I wouldn't know what Colbert was up to.

A few decades ago, the Monty Python sketches such as "The Upper Class Twit of the Year Competition" and "The Dead Parrot Sketch" had most viewers helpless with laughter.
I can think of no better tribute than to award the FIRST Monty Python Lifetime Achievement Award (The HISSY) to Stephen Colbert.

He probably smashed his face the same way I put my back out -- getting up from the toilet. I told everyone I hurt myself "fighting crime."

Another McCain double back flip on an issue and Colbert didn't duck out of the way in time. He got hit square in the face by a flying principle.

It was no facelift, unless he was aiming to have his eyes sewn closer together. He said himself it looks like he asked a plastic surgeon to stitch a unibrow.

It's obvious his glasses were on. I think maybe GotRights got it right! At any rate, we all know that his perfectly pretty face will heal nicely, and he will use this to further the cause of a movement towards allowing all faces to live in peace and harmony. Thank you, Stephen, for your continued philanthropy. I just love this guy!

I love him, too. But the raccoon-type bruising is not necessarily an indication he had his glasses on. It's classic broken nose type bruising to the surrounding soft tissue.

Thank god for Colbert. He totally deserves his Peabody's. Wondering what color his new wrist bands for "fighting face violence" will be. Perhaps purply-blue for the color of bruises? Reddish-blue? New charity - Stumblebums for Non-Violence.
