Obama Leads McCain In Four Battleground States

"An emerging Democratic coalition of women, minorities and younger voters is propelling Illinois Sen. Barack Obama to leads of five to 17 percentage points over Arizona Sen. John McCain among likely voters in the battleground states of Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin," according to four Quinnipiac University polls released today, conducted with The Wall Street Journal and washingtonpost.com.

Sen. McCain's lead among white voters in Colorado and Michigan cuts the gap to single digits, but doesn't offset Sen. Obama's strength among other groups. The Democrat also leads by eight to 21 percentage points among independent voters in each state. Overall results show:

* Colorado: Obama leads McCain 49 - 44 percent, including 51 - 39 percent among independent voters;
* Michigan: Obama tops McCain 48 - 42 percent, with 46 - 38 percent among independents;
* Minnesota: Obama buries McCain 54 - 37 percent, and 54 - 33 percent with independents;
* Wisconsin: Obama leads McCain 52 - 39 percent, and 50 - 37 percent with independents.

Democrats would like Obama to pick Sen. Hillary Clinton as his running mate, but voters overall reject the idea. Independent voters oppose Sen. Clinton by 16 to 29 percentage points.

More details here. Washington Post's Chris Cillizza has more:

Democrats held an edge over Republicans in three of the four states -¿ ranging from an 11-point gap among self-identified partisans in Wisconsin to an eight-point edge in Michigan. In Colorado, the survey found that Republicans comprised 29 percent of the electorate, compared with 28 percent for Democrats and 38 percent calling themselves independents. That dead heat on party identification, however, marks a major gain for Democrats from 2004, when exit polling showed Republicans with a nearly ten-point edge in the state.

Independents, who were widely written off during the 2004 election in favor of appeals by the candidates to their respective party bases, look likely to play a central role in picking the next president in these four battleground states. And for now, Obama has a clear edge over McCain among independent voters in all four states. That lead is largest in Minnesota, where Obama takes 54 percent among independents compared with just 33 percent for McCain. The Democrat's lead was 13 points in Wisconsin, 12 in Colorado and eight in Michigan.

Obama's lead among independents is all the more important given the large number of voters eschewing the two major parties in each state. In Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin, roughly three-in-ten voters identify as independents; in Colorado that number is closer to four in ten.

The political environment in each state suggests a decidedly uphill climb for McCain in the general election. In Colorado, just 31 percent of voters approve of the way President Bush is handling his job, while 63 percent disapprove. In Michigan, the numbers are even more dismal, with a meager 26 percent expressing approval of Bush and a whopping 67 percent disapproving.

Asked whether they were satisfied with the "way things are going in the nation today," more than eight-in-ten Michigan voters said they were either "somewhat" (27 percent) or "very" (56 percent) dissatisfied. In Colorado, 76 percent described themselves as "dissatisfied".

Regardless of the "polls", Arizona is a Battleground State.
No one in AZ really likes McCain.
We can take AZ for Obama if we stop IGNORING AZ.

How about a 50 state sweep for the Dems?
Morally and intellectually, the GOP is dead.

Reagan came close against Mondale in 1984 with 49 states. For what its worth Newsweek had Mondale ahead by 18 points after the dem convention.

GOP committed SUICIDE by trusting the now-famous LIAR & AD MAN KARL ROVE to create & push fake-cowboy image GWBush -- the know-nothing Pretzel-dent of the U.S.A.

The CROOKED G.O.P.

When I see that The Hague has sided with Obama on putting Bushco in prison for life, I will seriously think about voting for Obama. But I know that Obama would never support that as he seems like the same kind of politicians. Immunity for the telecoms? and only if elected will he then try to reverse it? Kind of like breaking your arm, and only if you pay him 50% of your income for life will he agree to put a cast on it. Nice guy. This is what the Mafia does isnt it? I no longer see much difference between him and McCain anymore. And I did have high hopes for him. Alas, he is only just another Ivy Greed politicians lying to reach his goal.

has a "negative connotation". Another SCAM, SHAM, SHAME of LANGUAGE MANIPULATION.

You're calling the ball game in the first inning like y'all did against HRC. Maybe we should not bother with the inconvenience of an election and if we did lets only count the O-votes.

According to Real Clear Politics, Senator Obama has been leading Senator McCain almost continuously since the middle of February 2008. And the gap has been ever widening since the first of June. Okay, when is Senator McCain going to turn this around, especially when he doesn't work weekends??? This is not the first inning--more like the fifth or sixth. All I can say is, Senator McCain better get cracking.

    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:56 PM on 06/26/2008

A big part of the O-strategy is to position the election as moot cuz these selected polls and some liberal talking heads declare the race to be over months before it is over.
Check after a few debates between the two; its way too early.

NO...

Reporting poll results is not "calling the election." Everyone with any intelligence (present company excepted) knows that poll results are just that -- poll results. But they are cause to be optimistic. I would a hell of a lot rather see Obama ahead in the polls the way he is than behind....

I agree! The American public is just so enthusiastic for a guy who admits he doesn't know much about how the economy works, doesn't know how to operate a computer, and hopes that we will have our troops in Iraq for 100 years. The voters will just love him.

There is a reason Obama doesn't have the balls to meet McCain in a Town Hall debate and that reason is the man is a dunce if he doesn't have a tele prompter or a prepared statment.

YEAH, CONS REALLY GET OFF...

On the fact that Obama's middle name is "Hussein." Know what? One of the things I admire about Obama is his not changing his name (any of them, in fact). His mother and friends called him "Barry" when he was growing up but he reverted to "Barack" when he got out on his own. Most pols named "Barack" would long since have taken to calling themselves "Barry" don't you think. Part of Obama's "Audacity of Hope" was just his belief that Americans wouldn't freak over name -- pretty amazing, don't you think, especially considering that all THREE of his names sound foreign and somewhat Middle Eastern and his middle name is the same as that of a despised former dictator. Go Hussein!

Idiocy is about to become illegal in the Pacific Northwest, but don't consider that an invitation. We like our nature just fine the way it is. Not yet overcrowded. Don't come here. Housing prices are insanely high still, there are no jobs, and we really dislike newcomers.
