Grover Norquist: Obama "John Kerry With A Tan"

John McCain has been trying hard of late to link Barack Obama with Jimmy Carter in the public consciousness, hoping that the "ineffectual" label that many voters affix to the former president will prove transferable.

Anti-tax activist Grover Norquist touts Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota as prime vice presidential prospects for presumptive Republican presdiential nominee John McCainBut Grover Norquist -- the conservative activist who specializes in promoting an anti-tax agenda and, more generally, revels in the role of agent provocateur -- is offering a different comparison.

Norquist dropped by The Times' Washington bureau today and, as part of his negative critique of Obama's liberal stances on economic issues and other matters, he termed the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee "John Kerry with a tan."

Has the negative comments regarding Obama even approached the level that they have against other politicians and Presidents?

It's easy to look at in now and use the war in Iraq as a rationalization for saying nasty things about Bush, but things were being said long before 9/11 or anything else happened.

Everyone called President Clinton "Bubba". I never thought that was a compliment. Did you? Has a definite regional, if not racial, connotation to it.

Think of all the horrible things Obama supporters (and others) have said about Hillary Clinton. Even quite a few condescending comment about her from Obama himself.

I'm tired of Obama being put out there as some kinda sacred cow. Tired of every criticism being labeled as racist. Tired of people losing their jobs over the slightest comments.

Does Obama need that much approval? Or, would it be better termed as: Does Obama need that much submission?

I'm not submitting, I'm looking for some to serve me and my country, not the other way around.

For clarification when I say "serve" I mean in the sense that someone serves in the military.

There aren't enough words to complete the list of nasty things that should be said about Bush. He has been the worst president in history. You are missing the point of the article. Anything that is meant to bring up O's being half black is meant exactly the way it is taken. Anyone who begins with or injects Mr. Obama's color or race into the conversation is race-baiting or racist, no matter which side of an argument they are coming from.

It tells you that the color of his skin is important to them. They are aware of it and they want to make sure you are aware of it. Otherwise, it should not be a subject at all.

By the way, if Mr. Norquist thinks comparing Obama to Kerry is a bad thing, I would suggest we have a "do over" of the 2004 election.

It's unfortunate: even though there may be a good idea or two in Mr. Norquist's head when it comes to this nation's finances and taxation, statements such as this cause complete loss of credibility.
