Bill Clinton

"What does Bill Clinton want?"

Barack Obama quickly determined what Hillary Clinton wants in the aftermath of defeat: a major role in the general election campaign, a star turn at the convention, help with her debt, and Obama's support for elected officials who backed her. The big-time holdout turns out to be her husband.

Bill is more complex. He wants respect, absolution and love.

The former president and Obama have not talked, and, by all accounts, the man of the Clinton household remains hurt and resentful. Associates provide a variety of explanations for the Bill Clinton dilemma, none of them mutually exclusive.

Some say Bill Clinton not only wants Obama to reach out to him, but to also promise to lift the cloud of alleged racism -- an accusation that continues to eat at the man once dubbed the nation's "first black president." Clinton, these folks suggest, wants Obama to publicly exonerate him of the charge that he played the race card in the primaries.

Beyond that, some associates say, Bill Clinton wants Obama to reach out to him as a mentor, a guide who can lead Obama through the labyrinth of a tough presidential election. "Bill wants to be honored, to return to the role of Democratic elder statesman, and get rid of this image of him as a pol willing to do anything to win," said one associate.

"He is still bruised from the trail, really hurt about the racist charges leveled against him, and convinced the Obama campaign fomented it," said another source familiar with the former president's attitude. "What he would really like is for Obama to apologize, but on one level he knows that is never going to happen," a third source said.

Another source, in contrast, downgraded the idea that Bill Clinton wants to be personally attended to by Obama. Instead, the source said, "POTUS wants first and foremost that his wife is treated with the respect that she has earned. Secondly, while he does not expect Obama to run for a Clinton third term, he would hope that Obama does not continue to implicitly criticize his eight years in office as he did during the primaries."

Finally, a person close to both Clintons contended that the current impasse between Obama and Bill Clinton "is not a big problem. All Obama has to do is ask, it's his name on the ballot." Once that hurdle is crossed, this friend of the former president and first lady said, "Bill Clinton will end up seducing Obama. Clinton likes to deal with people who have not necessarily treated him well," noting that Clinton and Newt Gingrich had a productive relationship until Gingrich began pressing for impeachment.

The accusation that Bill Clinton pointedly sought to downgrade Obama's success and to aggressively define him as a "black" candidate gained momentum on January 26, 2008 when the former president seemed to dismiss Obama's victory in South Carolina: "Jesse Jackson won South Carolina in '84 and '88. Jackson ran a good campaign. And Obama ran a good campaign here."

Clinton has not been hesitant to make his feelings about these charges known far and wide.

"I think that they [the Obama campaign] played the race card on me," Clinton told Philadelphia radio station WHYY on April 22. "We now know, from memos from the campaign, that they planned to do it along."

On June 2, Clinton told Huffington Post Off The Bus Reporter Mayhill Fowler:

"They had all these people standing up in this church cheering, calling Hillary a white racist, and he [Obama] didn't do anything about it. The first day he said 'Ah, ah, ah well.' Because that's what they do-- he gets other people to slime her."

During the campaign, Obama, in turn, complained a number of times about Bill Clinton's tactics and comments

"You know the former president, who I think all of us have a lot of regard for, has taken his advocacy on behalf of his wife to a level that I think is pretty troubling," Obama said on January 21. "He continues to make statements that are not supported by the facts....This has become a habit, and one of the things that we're gonna have to do is to directly confront Bill Clinton when he's making statements that are not factually accurate."

Now that he is the nominee, however, Obama has become more generous towards Bill.

"If the question is, do I want Bill Clinton campaigning for us, for the ticket, leading into November, the answer is absolutely yes. I want him involved. He is a brilliant politician. He was an outstanding president. And so, I want his help, not only in campaigning, but also in governing. And I'm confident that I'll get that help," Obama declared on June 25.

While Obama awaits a response from Mr. Clinton, blogger Marc Ambinder has been conducting an on-line poll asking whether 1) Obama should bend over backwards to make sure Bill Clinton campaigns for him in the fall 2) Obama should ignore Bill Clinton entirely or 3) Obama should ask Bill Clinton politely, but if Clinton says no, Obama should ignore him.

With a total of 2,292 votes cast, answer number 3 - "ask politely, if 'no,' ignore Clinton" - was decisively ahead with 1,765 votes, or 77 percent of Ambinder's responses; answers 1 and 2 drew 10% (240 votes) and 13% (287 votes) respectively.

Why does Obama have to apologize to everyone for everyone. I don't think that we know why Bill has not shown up, but I'm sure that he will come around at the appropriate time. I think that we need to give him a chance and stop trying to make him operated on our terms. I think that it would be great if Bill went to the middle east with Obama. Wouldn't that be something?

It would be awful. Clinton's not a team player and in no way wants Obama to have the spotlight.

In honor of Hillary's great conduct post-primaries, I'm dropping the term "The Clintons" from personal use. The post-primary Hillary has been great and deserving of appreciation and respect.

Pouting, bitter, angry, blame-game, Bill? Not so much. Hillary has emerged as one of the most influential Democratic leaders in the country. Bill, unless he gets his act together, with this attitude will soon be a pariah. He needs to stop playing the victim--fast.

It's as much Bill's party as it's Jimmy Carter's as it's Michael Dukakis's as it's Walter Mondale's as it's John Kerry's as it's Al Gore's.

I'll bet, after this primary, if you put Al Gore and Bill Clinton head to head in a poll and asked Democrats to pick the one they like more, Al would win in a landslide. It's great that Bill got himself elected twice and spared the country a second term of GHW Bush and a term of Dole. But he's got to control that ego of his, it's killing his rep with the party.

Mr. Edsall, shame on you. The former president has been in five countries since the primaries and in that time spending time with his daughter and celebrating the 90th birthday of one the world’s greatest leaders Nelson Mandela. Now he returns home to vicious attacks for being a grumpy old man.

The former president said what he said and the future president did what he did. It was a contest of two teams. One loss. One won. Your intention to present the Democratic nominee as a bully and the former president as sulking old man is a total misrepresentation of the new Democratic machine.

I believe these two statesmen will mend their fences as both men understand the nature of chivalry in modern politics. Don’t lose faith in the comeback kid. And I am sure Mr Edsall, the presumptive Democratic nominee accepts your challenge for unity.

A well crafted joint appearance foreign trip coming up in July is probable. It could do them both a world of good personally and professionally. The Democratic party’s position inheriting two wars would be visualized. Imagine the impact of a speech from the former president to our soldiers being televised from Iraq or Afghanistan of behalf of the Democratic nominee. The world needs to see that we are true to our symbol of peace and these two could just pull it off.

Sorry, not buying it. There is plenty of technology available that would allow him to participate, even if it were a taped statement of congratulations. Nope. His silence is deafening and rude.

Nonsense. Obama does not have to be introduced overseas. He was right not to go with McCain, and he would be wrong to go with Clinton. He needs to be seen as presidential, and I am sure he will. I remember the first time I saw him that way; he was being interviewed by someone who asked if he would take the troops out of Iraq even if the generals disagreed. He said without hesitation that he as president would make the policy, and it was the generals' job to figure out how to make it happen. That is how he needs to be seen abroad - on his own and in charge.

As for Bill Clinton, if it was unclear what his role would be if his wife was elected, how much more so with Obama. Let them work it out as they see fit.

No of course the Democratic nominee doesn’t need the former President but this is silly season for our Party. A united front with these two modern politicians has far more appeal than something out of the poli-drama pages of 1968. We are in two wars with one being totally unnecessary. The former president probably needs more hand holding than the Democratic nominee but the point is as a united front it signals to our troops that the Democratic Party is bringing them home.

Our soldiers are not caught up in the daily poli-drama as we are. No one cares about the former President’s role in this 2008 Presidential campaign. He is honoured bound by oath and duty to the men and women protecting this nation. B & B maybe a force as individuals but together they owe these servicemen and women the audacity of hope.

Our troops know the Republicans got them in. Its time they realise the seriousness of bringing them home. These two powerful Democrats as a united front would be silly to do anything less. Its easy for us to be jaded in by these photo opts but for our heroes B & B’s presence would mean so much more.

Anyone who thinks BC or Hc won't campaign for O is completely out of touch. BC and Hc are good Dems and they will be there when we take back our country. Try not to let these talking heads have too much credibility. They are usually wrong. Obama 08

I was watching the exit polls live from North Carolina on January 26 on MSNBC, & distinctly recall that it was Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, Pat Buchanan, and that panel who initially questioned whether they had just witnessed a racist remark from Bubbuh Clinton, and that was exactly my impression as I sat there stunned listening to him. It wasn't merely what he said but the fact that he said it with such venom. HC's campaign tried to ignore it until there was such an outcry that she couldn't avoid addressing it. And then of course both of them only became more vitriolic as they went through that 11-state slump.

I saw the same thing and agree totally. When a remark is made with such hatred and vehemence there is little doubt as to where it is coming from.

Obama's supporters are the most sickening, vile, disgusting people walking the planet right now.
According to them the guy who spent 20 years listening to "The White man is the root of all evil" every Sunday isn't a racist, but the guy who has saved millions of dying Black folks by providing life saving medicine is a racist.
It's a good thing most of you far Leftist Obama supporters do not believe in Hell, but rest assured you are all reserving your own special place there.
And another thing, If you think watching Dick Gregory and Rev Wright getting thunderousg standing ovations for spitting in the Clinton's faces is good for race relations in this country, you are in for a big surprise.

It's possible that Bill has, due to his heart ailment and whatnot, proceeded to fall off his nut, but since he's done little to endear himself, I left entirely free not to care.

I like that 77% of people in that poll said to ask politely (which Obama has essentially already done by praising Bill publicly in recent days), and if not, leave him alone to baste in his own juices.

In short, if Bill is worried about his legacy, his current petulance is only exacerbating the problem.

Not that I care of course.

Hillary and Bill are different creatures. I'd like to see Hillary on the campaign trail. Bill should just stay home. He always has to be the belle of the ball. Any campaigning from him would seem phone and might even be counterproductive.

In Obama's position right now there is little reason to believe that former president Bill Clinton can help him as much as Sen. Hillary Clinton on the trail. Clinton would be good at the convention though for the sake of total unity.

I've had no problem with the so-called scandals that have cropped up during Obama's campaign. I feel he's handled them with sensitivity and care, using them constructively as learning--and teaching--opportunities.

However, I am deeply dismayed and uneasy to see him slurping at the feet of both of the Clintons. Obama is the man who trounced those imposters, who had us believe we would be charting a new course for this troubled country. Instead, he's lavishing the two of them with hyperbolic plaudits. I have no idea now whether he actually believes what he's saying, or is pandering to them to defuse their antipathy (which is not possible), or is kowtowing to win over their presumed fans.

Bill Clinton revealed how he really felt about AAs in his nasty remarks about Obama, and AA vo6ers responded by turning away from Mrs. Clinton at the polls. When she affirmed Bill's racism with her own statements ("hardworking Americans, white Americans"), it sealed the deal. For Obama to spend his time and our money burnishing the justly tarnished reputations of this pair is just plain unacceptable. Mrs. Clinton didn't earn respect; she earned disdain for refusing to slink away in shame when caught in lie after lie after lie. Why Obama can stand up to the Republicans but turns into wimp jello with these two, I don't know, but it's eroding my confidence in his character and his judgment.

Frankly, after the performance he turned in for his wife, I would prefer he just stay on his world tour and earn enough money for them to recoup their debt themselves. If he returns in time for the innauguration he can still go to some of the parties....

WJC 'defended' Hillary by saying she told untruths because she was basically too old and too tired to know better. If he speaks this way about his wife of approximately 30 years, what would be say if defending Obama???

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:23 AM on 06/29/2008

If I were BO I would not want WJC campaigning for me. You never know what he will say to his audience. I can picture him saying, "I'm campaigning for Obama, but my wife would have been a better president."

I'm a small person and I don't trust Bill as far as I can throw him! He is the type of person you need to keep your eyes on.
