A war of words has broken out between two of the progressive blogosphere's most beloved figures: MSNBC's Keith Olbermann and blogger/author Glenn Greenwald of Salon.com.

In a post yesterday, Greenwald charged that Olbermann's "blind devotion to Barack Obama" had let him to excuse and defend Obama's support of the FISA 'compromise' legislation. Greenwald noted that Olbermann has previously condemned the idea of giving immunity to telecom companies that spied on Americans, calling it a "shameless, breathless, literally textbook example of Fascism" and comparing it to the actions of the Third Reich.

"But," Greenwald wrote, "[n]ow that Barack Obama supports a law that does the same thing -- and now that Obama justifies that support by claiming that this bill is necessary to keep us Safe from the Terrorists -- everything has changed."

Last night, Olbermann invited Newsweek's Jonathan Alter onto his show to discuss Obama's support for the FISA and telecom amnesty bill (video of the segment is here). There wasn't a syllable uttered about "immunizing corporate criminals" or "textbook examples of Fascism" or the Third Reich. There wasn't a word of rational criticism of the bill either. Instead, the two media stars jointly hailed Obama's bravery and strength -- as evidenced by his "standing up to the left" in order to support this important centrist FISA compromise. [...]

Grave warning on Olbermann's show that telecom amnesty and FISA revisions were hallmarks of Bush Fascism instantaneously transformed into a celebration that Obama, by supporting the same things, was leading a courageous, centrist crusade in defense of our Constitution.

There's much more -- you can read Greenwald's full post here. And Olbermann responded with a post last night on Daily Kos.

He explained his segment by citing former Nixon aide (and frequent Countdown guest) John Dean's argument that the FISA compromise "clearly did not preclude future criminal prosecution of the telecoms - it only stopped civil suits." (He added, "I think John Dean is worth 25 Glenn Greenwalds (maybe 26 Keith Olbermanns)."

More Olbermann:

Thus, as I phrased it on the air tonight, obviously Obama kicked the left in the teeth by supporting the bill. But anybody who got as hot about this as I did would prefer to see a President Obama prosecuting the telecoms criminally, instead of seeing a Senator Obama engender more "soft on terror" crap by casting a token vote in favor of civil litigation that isn't going to pass since so many other Democrats caved anyway.

When Markos was on (Monday? Again, blurs) he made the simple but essential point that if this is Obama's rationale for this, maybe he should explain it. I think it can be argued that if he's caught the same hole in the bill that Dean has, his best course is actually to shut up and take the criticism and hope the Republicans don't see the loophole.

I don't know much about Mr. Greenwald and I didn't read his full piece, but I do know that the snippet he's taken out of the transcript of my conversation with Jon Alter last night makes it sound like I was saying defying the left was a good thing. I was actually contrasting it to not cowering to the Republicans, simply as a different thing.

I do think Mr. Greenwald's suggestion of some kind of betrayal on my part is simplistic and childish. I'll take the Dean interpretation of this. If it isn't the Senator's game plan, he'll catch hell from me about it later.

Olbermann should have done a "special comment" on Obama's support of this stupid bill. By not doing so, his attacks against Bush for this same provision disingenuous. His backpedaling with regard to Mr. Obama reveals the reason why I and a lot of other diehard Olbermann fans have stopped watching his program. His total lack of objectivity during the primary campaign turned us off.

How many times does Obama have to say this HE DOES NOT SUPPORT immunity to the telecom companies. Obama has voted for a Bill in the and has opposed certain provisions on the bill like Cheney energy bill that he voted for he explained why he voted for it and what parts of it he doesnt agree with just like the farm bill. I wish these liberal blogsphere would get a CLUE. Life is about compromise you dont always get what you want in a bill. Take the war funding bill that pass what did they get out of it the new GI bill. I'm SICK of these leftist liberal that see the world in black and white. Life isnt black and white Obama NEVER claimed to see things in black and white in fact he is a big believer in finding common ground.

It takes time for these blockheads to get a subject straight and by then they have given the Republican's their talking points.

Thanks for pointed out ONE MORE TIME that Obama is not for immunity for criminal behavior, only the revised bill that will not support civil liabilities !!

Nevertheless, he voted for the Cheney energy bill which gave big tax breaks to oil and provided for more nuclear energy. One of Obama's Chicago big$ donors is in nuclear energy, and he re-wrote an Illinois state energy bill to favor that Co. He also voted against an amendment which would have capped the interest on credit cards, came out in the debate with HRC and JE, and Obama said he voted against that amendment because he thought the cap was too high...........meanwhile there is no cap at all on the % of interest that can be charged the little guy. What was his excuse for voting for:

"opposed certain provisions on the bill like Cheney energy bill that he voted for he explained why he voted for it and what parts of it he doesn't agree with just like the farm bill.

I bet his reason sounded good. In the Illinois state legislature he voted present 126 times...his excuse he didn't like parts of the bill. Well, h*ll! then vote no, and introduce a bill to your liking.
Just don't vote present to avoid controversy.

Was. I sopped watching when Keith started using terms like "upper tier, viable, electable..." when covering the primary contest. He started making the news rather than reporting.

Olbermann is letting fame and Obama worship get too much to his arrogant head.

Clearly Glenn Greenwald is right.

Until Olbermann can get a JD Law Degree I think I'll defer to Glenn on interpretation of Constitutional Law!!!

And then you want immunity for your criminal cohorts and it becomes one big circle. First red, then blue. I don't trust liars, regardless of the party.

Keith needs to looks long range. Obama needs to win to prosecute the telecoms, but he can do something as a Senator right now. Sorry Keith, I like ya but I follow no one blindly.

So he is lying, misrepresenting his true positions on the issues to get elected and that's ok!

YES because McCain and Hilary did the EXACT same thing and they did it with much more frequency than Obama but people were OK with it. the media called it McCain being a maverick but they are raking Obama over the coals for it so if people still want to continue and support him inspite of it just like they did McCain and Hilary then they have the RIGHT to do so.

But it may not be the landslide - with accompanying mandate and coat-tails - that it might otherwise have been.

It was a STUPID move on BOs part

How the hell is it stupid? He will get the coatails in traditional Dem places AND now conservative Dems will get his coatails with the FISA vote. Do you live in those conservative belts where you have these crazy Republicans running around telling people the Dems won't keep you safe? If he voted against it you best damn believe they would have RNC and 527 commercials running all over in those places linking these Dems to Obama and a potential terroist act threat. The republicans in progressive areas voted for the damn FISA so they wont use that against their opponent. Hell, they are even using working with Obama like Gordon Smith in OR. He innoculated them from other wedge issues like guns and the death penalty with his other brilliant repsonses. The Republicans are pulling their teeth and they are using this foolishness of angry liberals to make some headway. But with each day you guys keep whining about this you pull more mods, independents, republicans and his ardent supporters towards Obama. And those young enthused voters are smater than you think. They know the potential of an Obama presidency and are not going to stop working hard for him. This is all political theater and I am enjoying the show.

No the only stupid move would be yours, implying that you will not vote for him by saying it won't be a lndslisde is foolish, because trust me this is only an issue with those voters who are paying close attention, to the average voter they barely know what FISA is.

You do realize that laws can be repealed, right? Why should Obama fight now when he'll lose? Just so he can appease you? If you are foolish enough to withdraw your support, do you really think McCain will do any of the things you want? Step into the real world.

If we took the collective wisdom of all the persons commenting on this blog (including mine), it would not come close to the wisdom in Barack's little finger.

Have some faith! We've only just begun.
