NEW YORK — Oil futures climbed to a new record near $143 a barrel Friday as the dollar weakened against the euro, confirming expectations that the falling greenback, a major factor in crude's stratospheric rise, will extend its decline and add to oil's appeal.

Retail gas prices inched lower overnight, but are likely to resume their own trek into record territory now that oil futures have broken out of the trading range where they had been for nearly 3 weeks.

Light, sweet crude for August delivery rose as high as $142.99 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange before pulling back sharply in a spate of late-day profit-taking to settle up 57 cents at a record $140.21. On Thursday, the contract shot past $140 and rose more than $5 to a new settlement record.

The latest record came as the dollar fell against the euro in afternoon trading, having traded roughly unchanged for much of the day.

"The dollar was slightly stronger, and when it gave up its gains, that gave oil the green light," said James Cordier, president of Tampa, Fla.-based trading firms Liberty Trading Group and OptionSellers.com.

The market now believes the Federal Reserve is unlikely to raise interest rates in the near future; since higher rates tend to strengthen the dollar, traders are anticipating that it will continue to fall and, consequently, that investors will keep turning to commodities including oil as a hedge against inflation.

"Oil's back in favor, especially with people bailing out of the stock market," said Jim Ritterbusch, president of energy consultancy Ritterbusch and Associates in Galena, Ill.

The stock market's recent swoon is also sending investors in search of higher-yielding investments. On Thursday, the Dow Jones industrial average fell nearly 360 points, and in afternoon trading Friday was down more than 100 points.

Story continues below

"When money has nowhere to go, it is parked in commodities as it is one of the few investment instruments that actually rises the more money you pour into it," said Oliver Jakob, an analyst at Petromatrix Gmbh, in Switzerland in a note.

With oil over $140 a barrel, traders are now expecting to see $145 and even $150, analysts say.

At the pump, meanwhile, gas prices slipped 0.1 cent overnight to a national average of $4.066 a gallon, according to a survey of stations by AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express. Gas prices have fallen slightly from their June 16 record of $4.08 a gallon, but will likely resume their record breaking rise if oil futures keep trending higher.

That seems likely. Oil has more than doubled in the past year due to the dollar's decline, but also because of rising global demand, particularly in fast-growing economies such as China and India. Supply outages in the Middle East and Nigeria have also contributed, as has falling production in Mexico.

The sharp increase in oil prices has driven a similar rise in fuel prices. Gas prices are $1.09 higher than a year ago, and diesel prices were up $1.85 over the past year at a national average of $4.763 a gallon on Friday. Diesel is used to fuel most industrial vehicles, trucks, trains and ships, and its increase is a large part of the reason food and consumer goods prices are rising, putting additional pressure on consumers already paying $4 and more for gas. Diesel prices peaked at $4.797, also on June 16, but are likely to push past that record if oil futures keep rising.

In other Nymex trading Friday, July gasoline futures fell 1.01 cents to settle at $3.5012 a gallon after earlier rising to a trading record of $3.585. July heating oil futures rose 2.32 cents to settle at $3.9066 a gallon. August natural gas futures fell 5 cents to settle at $13.198 per 1,000 cubic feet.

In London, Brent crude futures rose 48 cents to settle at $140.31 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

And STILL no action to stop speculators by closing the Enron Loophole and beefing up Margin requirements . However Conservatives say Speculators are NOT the cause of the problem . Of course the Saudi's seem to feel they are and perhaps with Good cause NO SOONER did they increase Pumping than the price of OIl spiked again . Now they may be WRONG and we may also be INCORRECT but what harm is there in doing the above . If WRONG it will change NOTHING BUT if we are CORRECT then the price will drop almost overnight .
As Obama pointed out allowing more offshore drilling will do NOTHING in the short run . At least it will or 10 years before a drop reaches the Pumps . He also pointed out that the Oil Companies have many hundreds of leases that they are not exploiting and suggested that FIRST they develope those that they already have

Whether you believe this push upward price is based on speculators or "peak oil" the consequences of high energy prices are dire for the US economy.

"Sky-High Oil Will Make U.S. Go Broke"
http://tinyurl.com/638bvy

Little mentioned lately is the more than 18% annual increase in the money supply. The Fed is monetizing junk and putting trillions of extra dollars into the economy because they have little choice at this point. Their "too big to fail" mantra is flawed because the banks have already failed and were never solvent to begin with, much less now in a time of "credit crisis."

Buy gold you say? Ha! Buy canned foods and ammunition. From Wall Street to Washington to "off-shore" subsidiaries of "globalized" corporations: the whole bunch is rotten to the core. There are consequences for the decisions our "leaders" have chosen, ultimately putting our nation on the path to destruction.

Murphy was an optimist....we have some tough times ahead of us and if there is no economy, we surely will not have any of the things you advocate such as research into alternative energy, mass transit, and conservation. Ultimately, we working schmucks have to get up every day and figure out a way to support our families first.

What I can't understand is the seemingly contempt view left-leaning people such as yourself seem to have toward "rural" people (your "point" number 3 below). Where does your food come from? Do you grow it on the fire escape of your Lower-Manhattan flat?

Big ole . . . "Ditto Welcome" to all the conservatives joining the conversation.

May have taken you a while to get here . . . but the help is welcome!

Please note the following guidelines for this thread, unless told otherwise . . .

(1) High gas prices are good
(2) Cars are bad
(3) Living in the suburbs is really bad
(4) Living rurally is really really bad
(5) Position on living at all is debatable

I've learned the rules . . . still figuring the rationale!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:15 PM on 06/27/2008

Let me update:

1) Universally correct.
2) LARGE cars are bad.
3) Living in the suburbs is bad if you have to commute to the city.
4) Living rurally is really really bad if you know better.
5) Life is inescapable. Evolution takes care of the rest.
6) All of the above but 5) can be ignored if you have plenty of money.

At least you are an honest Democrat.
Higher fuel prices is what Obama said he wanted when he first started his run, but now he says he wanted them to come about slowly. Ok, how does it feel? If Obama and the Dems control it all you can be assured that these high prices will be fixed into law with the introduction of carbon taxes.

And if he does not win they will be fixed higher by continuing/everlasting war.

The Europeans are doing quite well, actually. Their major problem is jobs and alternative energy has been creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs over the last years. It will be creating millions of more jobs over the next decade. And the good thing is, none of them can be shipped to Asia!

The current price of oil is based on almost completely on speculation... the people that say it isn't are the same ones who said there wasn't an internet stock bubble or a housing bubble ... a small amount of people have all the money and it is very mobile and they are chasing commodities now. Check out what the Carlyle Group is buying.
The word on the street is buy oil now because Israel is going to attack Iran soon and anyone holding oil will make a bundle... let the good times roll for Bush's haves and have mores....

If belief that supplies are unstable in war causing the value of the commodity to be more dear (i.e., higher priced) is speculation, then I'll buy your argument. I think a better definition of speculation does not rule out reality.

The WORLD will be hooked on OIL and other carbon-based fuels for our lifetime and the lifetime of our children and maybe, our grandchildren. All alternative energy sources will not power a JET or a country full of automobiles for at least the next 50 to 100 years. That doesn't preclude our investing in research and development, BUT until fruitiion, OIL, Natural Gas, and COAL will power the WORLD.

DRILL - DRILL - DRILL, NOW!

If we do, more OIL and GAS will be available in 5 years. Battery powered cars or H-cars won't be online and truly functional to you or me, EVER.

1 barrel of oil has a caloric value of 6.1GJ, that's a useful energy content of 3.6GJ i.e. 1000kWh. Generation of 1000kWh costs approx. $40. Oil, as it is, is trading at three and a half times the average generation cost of electricity.

Please, people, check your facts before you post.

"All alternative energy sources will not power a JET or a country full of automobiles for at least the next 50 to 100 years."

You may want to check with Virgin Airlines on that. And Japanese Automakers. But the most significant effect of alternatives is reducing demand for oil, today. You can order solar and take delivery today. And unlike oil and gas prices - which will continue to climb - we've already seen the top price for solar energy: it's prices will continue to DROP.

Course, if you've got stock in oil or exploration equipment, your post makes sense. Addicts unite. Kiss Saudi a**. Enjoy.

CONSUMPTION BOYCOTT NOW

We can stop the Occupation of Iraq, by reducing your personal spending and letting it be known why.

Eliminate your unnecessary spending for-- Movies, $4.00 coffees, newspapers, magazines, non-essential items, vacations, new cars, electronics, hotels, entertainment, restaurants, reduce driving, etc. Create a goal of cutting $100/week from your budget and telling people why.

If you must spend, avoid corporate stores. If you are able to buy something from a small vendor, do it. If you are able to do without, don’t buy it. Find hobbies other than consuming.

If everyone reduced their spending in all areas, until our troops were brought HOME (not re-deployed within the Middle East) the economic impact would put enormous pressure onto the banking-mortgage-insurance system to stop the war.

Your benefit
Take the money which you will save and use it to pay off credit cards, mortgages, existing car loans, college loans or to build a nest egg. If 10% of the population (30,000,000) could stop spending $100.00 a week and put it towards existing debt without acquiring more, it would take $3,000,000,000.00 A WEEK off of the banker’s books.

Be patriotic and QUIT CONSUMING in order to bring our troops HOME from this illegal occupation NOW. If 10% of us do it, we can make a change in this world. CONSERVE.

If you are against the war, is this too much sacrifice to ask to end the occupation?

Good luck with that. First you have to teach people to become mature adults. Then you can ask them to conserve. Or... you just slap them with high prices. That works, too, and nobody has to go through the pains of growing up and becoming responsible adults.

When you have raised young people with the message "you can have anything you want dear" and those kids grow up expecting everything to be put in their hands just because they demand it, how can you expect that they'll sacrifice? Hell, wearing designer sneakers and prattling on about how Paris is doing is considered political discourse to them.

They were taught to be consumers because that's all that is driving our economy. We moved from a producinng nation to a consuming nation. Now you want them to stop consuming? Now what?

There has been a transition since 1990 from competitive capitalism to "international oligopoly." This is primarily socio-economic resulting from the "financialization" of capital. Since much of the oil under US control is in the continental US, it stands to reason that the reserves themselves here in our country and owned by oil companies, can be sold as derivatives. I read the Asia Times online and just read Henry C.K Liu's article about oil prices. Without understanding the totality of the issues affecting the pricing of oil and the effects on the world's economic system, discussion of policy is useless.

We are engaged in many proxy wars and efforts to establish the super-capitalism referred to by Robert Reich, Bill Clinton's Secretary of Labor, but the worldwide consolidation of capital by mergers and acquisitions has resulted in global consolidation in materials, energy and food and most importantly into multinational banking coalescing with industry capital. As of 2005 the top ten global banks held assets of 12.6 trillion. HSBC has assets as of 2008 of 2.3 trillion, according to Forbes. These banks play the roles of merchant banks, investment banks and active investors. Throw in SWFs, hedge funds and pension trusts and you will begin to understand the faltering of investment capital and finacialization where profits accrue primarily through financial channels rather than through trade and commodity production.
