The false rumor that Barack Obama is a Muslim spread quickly and widely throughout the internet. Obama has launched a website, FightTheSmears.com, to help combat this falsehood, along with others that crop up on the internet. The Washington Post today has an extensive article detailing how the rumor first appeared. An Obama supporter and scholar, Danielle Allen, received an email calling Obama a Muslim, and having met the Senator while working as a dean at the University of Chicago, and knowing the claim to be baseless, she was determined to discover how it started and how one could stop it.

The e-mail landed in Danielle Allen's queue one winter morning as she was studying in her office at the Institute for Advanced Study, the renowned haven for some of the nation's most brilliant minds. The missive began: "THIS DEFINITELY WARRANTS LOOKING INTO."

Laid out before Allen, a razor-sharp, 36-year-old political theorist, was what purported to be a biographical sketch of Barack Obama that has become one of the most effective -- and baseless -- Internet attacks of the 2008 presidential season. The anonymous chain e-mail makes the false claim that Obama is concealing a radical Islamic background. By the time it reached Allen on Jan. 11, 2008, it had spread with viral efficiency for more than a year...

...As an Obama supporter -- she had met the senator while she worked as a dean at the University of Chicago -- it made her angry. And curious.

"I started thinking, 'How does one stop it?' "

The man Allen found who takes credit for the first posting of an article falsely asserting Obama is a Muslim is a man named Andy Martin.

Martin, a former political opponent of Obama's, is the publisher of an Internet newspaper who sends e-mails to his mailing list almost daily. He said in an interview that he first began questioning Obama's religious background after hearing his famous keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. In an Aug. 10, 2004, article, which he posted on Web sites and e-mailed to bloggers, he said that Obama had concealed his Muslim heritage. "I feel sad having to expose Barack Obama," Martin wrote in an accompanying press release, "but the man is a complete fraud. The truth is going to surprise, and disappoint, and outrage many people who were drawn to him. He has lied to the American people, and he has sought to misrepresent his own heritage." Martin's article did not suggest an association between Obama and radical Islam.

Martin was trying to launch a Senate bid against Obama when he says he first ran the Democrat's name by a contact in London. "They said he must be a Muslim. That was interesting to me because it was an angle that nobody had covered. We started looking. As a candidate you learn how to harness the Internet. You end up really learning how to work the street. I sort of picked this story up as a sideline." Martin said the primary basis for his belief was simple -- Obama's father was a Muslim. In a defamation lawsuit he filed against the New York Times and others several months ago, Martin says that Obama "eventually became a Christian" but that "as a matter of Islamic law began life as a Muslim" due to his father's religion.

If I were a muslim, I would be offended by the way my heritage is used to hurt people. Only in the USA. It just shows us to be idiots. So what if he were a muslim. Just what would that mean. I have really been shocked with the election season this year. It is really silly season. Voters are just not given any credit for having any sense and many people have their minds changed about an issue or person because of silly rumors started by grown people who many call christians. Many christians disappoint me. I'd be more afraid of some of the christians that I know than I would be of some muslims.

I agree. However, it is equally offensive when people suggest that they will vote for Obama's "white side," as if something is wrong with his "black side." There is nothing wrong with being Muslim or black. The only thing wrong are the people who see it as something wrong. These are the people who think that by insisting that he's Muslim or diminishing him because of the color of his skin, they are SMEARING him, but seeing it as a smear emerges from biases of their mind and from their heart. Not too long ago, someone said that America is a racist nation, and that person was attacked for being hateful and anti-American. I realize now that it was the racists themselves who were attacking him. Their fear of anyone who is different, be it race or religion, is a very frightening way to live and makes it a very frightening world in which we live.

The Clintonistas didn't originate the rumor, but once it was out there, they egged it on, by not immediately confronting it and repudiating the people who were spreading it.

Same criticism as saying that Obama did nothing to halt accusations of racism against both Clintons, neither of whom have a racist bone in their bodies.

I don't get why his religion matters anyway, but he's not a Muslim. Who cares? Besides, even if he was, what difference would it make? Hell, I'd take a moderate secular Muslim from Turkey over a fundie like Bush or Lieberman anyday.

Attacks against Obama spread just as quickly as Obama's underhanded attacks against Clinton. Not any faster, and not any slower.

I don't recall Obama making 'underhanded attacks' against Senator Clinton. Did he ever spread any untruths about her? Enlighten me. I do remember her saying that Obama wasn't a Muslim....that she knew of. That remark was quite underhanded.

Still bitter that Clinton lost. Let it go. Join us, vote for McCain or sit it out. We don't care. We're tired of these little "pouting posts". Hillary did her part with numerous "underhanded attacks".....it was an election for Christ's sake! What did you expect a white glove tea party?

I don't either. He was always a gentleman. I was proud of him for not engaging in the mudfight. The worst I've heard anyone name was the "Annie Oakley" comment, and I thought that was kind of funny. There is a big difference between accusing someone of being something that is not true (the "elitist" flap, and the "Muslim" flap) and accusing someone of pretending to be something they are not (gun-touting Hillary as Annie Oakley).
The attacking was done by both Obama supporters and Hillary supporters, and I don't think the candidates can be held responsible for what other people say.

Isn't this the teapot calling the kettle black, literally. Yu think this let's the Clintons off the hook. They "may not" have generated the e-mails, but they did nothing to discount them, they actually joined in on the bandwagon, with their sly inuendos. They were no better than the ignorant person inciting this rumor.

They carried those slanderous persnal attacks with doctored photos dipicting him as a muslim. The photo that darkened his skin color and the photo in the gifted dress garb from a family friend. These are the sly inuendos they thought would work for them. It only gave ammunition for the cable channels and the Repugs to savagely attack Obama's character. This is why she will have no place in his administration, number two or otherwise. This will back fire on the Repugs the same way, if not; we're sure that McSame and his bashing of women will do it for them

I agree belief08. HRC lost my vote in the "60 Minutes" interview with the "as far as I know". Up until then I had kept an open mind and tried to study each candidates position on the issues. I think she lost many in that Interview. It showed how clueless she truly was. I don't care if she was badgered. You don't say that. The Clintons lost many voters on their callowness and pandering to the worst, most ignorant , elements in American society. I live in Pennsylvania and Obama was right. People here are grieving to what has been done to them by holding onto their Bibles and guns. But pompous "Rick Sanatorium" finally got his walking papers. People can only vote against their own self interest for ten years. The spell is now broken across the board. Change must come. Even for the Wal-Mart level of consciousness in the Universe.

Part II

The point is, there's nothing wrong in representing a minority under a positive light (as with the Jewish population), but there is a problem in its over-representation (i.e. the proportionality of its representation in relation to the general population) and even more so with the under-representation and demonization of a equally numerically significant population (i.e. Muslims). Does it matter? I think it does; television not only naturalises behavior but it also defines parameters of inclusion/exclusion; it shapes perceptions and opinions. And even the supposedly "enlightened" media is not safe from these stereotypes; not long ago the Huff was talking about a "smear” campaign against Obama - meaning he was being called a Muslim. Now, there's nothing wrong in being a Muslim; to call it a smear is comparable to call anyone a felon - but yet, there' is this generalized insensitivity even from those who supposedly should use the words judiciously. Muslims have been some of the most decent, humble, knowledgeable, kind people I've met in my life (I'm a woman, brought up as a "lapsed" catholic and now, an agnostic); there are over a billion of them, so generalizations are a pointless, as it is an unhelpful, exercise.

I hope the US weans itself off the need for an evil Other - at the end f the day, not only do we live in Liquid Times ( paraphrasing the great philosopher Zygmunt Bauman) but that life is played out on the same clump of clay.

Wonderful observation -- one which I have been aware of for quite some time. The American Jewish culture has heavily influenced American culture, although American Jews comprise a relatively small percentage of our overall population (2%). They have dominated our entertainment industry for generations, and the American media is 25% Jewish. It therefore stands to reason that they -- especially those with Zionist leanings -- would take advantage of their privileged positions and elevate themselves and their religion while vilifying Muslims, since Arabic countries traditionally at odds with Israel are predominately Muslim.

I find it to be despicable that America (80% Christian) places the Judeo-Christian religion on a pedestal, while at the same time damns Islam to hell. The far right rarely mentions the word "Muslim" without adding "radical" to it. Presidential candidates are encouraged to shun Muslims and avoid being seen or photographed with them, as if they were outcasts or lepers. How utterly insulting to the American Muslim community.

If cowardly Americans are so "skeered" of Muslims because they associate them with terrorism, then they should study the history of Christianity in America, taking particular note of the terroristic attrocities that those Christians committed against Native Americans in the name of their Christian "God." It ain't pretty. If America would stop being so biased in favor of Israel, then perhaps they could have better relations with Muslim countries (duh!).

Thanks for posting those. In other words, because I realize that I don't have any idea whether there's consciousness behind the universe, I call myself an agnostic.

Because I don't at all believe a specific set of folktales of a royal/grandfatherly universe creator, certain people call me an atheist. Some of them even say I hate a fictional character. Let me set the record straight: don't hate God, don't hate Jesus. On the other hand, don't like Satan, and do think Leviticus should have had a Twilight Zone episode devoted to him.

The rumor spread because it is politically incorrect to say "I am voting against this guy because he is black." But it is somehow perfectly acceptable in today's America to say "I am voting against this guy because he's Muslim." Bigots are just finding the socially acceptable door and walking right through.

Part I

And if he were a Muslim what's the problem? There are between 3 and 6 million Muslims in the US; in other words, they might have numerical parity with the Jewish population - but, considering the way the Media portraits them, they could be dodos in disguise.

Which brings us to the next point - name a series, a film, anything on TV that doesn't have a overbearing Jewish mother, or the nerdy but highly intelligent Jewish guy, the irritating but lovable Jewish businessman, a passing reference, a Happy Hanukkah, a Bar Mitzvah. From "House" to "Friends" to "Sex and the City" to "Charmed" to "Parker Lewis" to "Frasier" to "Desperate Housewives" to "Entourage" to "CSI" to even the "Third Rock from the Sun"! I could go on... and that is and not even getting started on films. Alternatively, for a similarly numerically significant population (Muslims) can anyone think of anything other than your typical alien, terrorist stereotype? I can think of a couple - a nurse in E.R.; the policeman in a film ("A Perfect Murder") with Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow... ah, a family in "The Shield" but they were harassed (because they were Muslims); an office in "E-Ring” (also falsely accused of being a collaborator)... That's about it, really; unless we're talking about films where they're proven terrorists. The contrast is far more striking when you're abroad, as people's fresh readings are far sharper, and they are quick to point the discrepancies to you.

"... the heart of the matter is that children born of Muslim lineage will be considered Muslims and according to Islamic law the door of apostasy will never be opened to them. If anyone of them renounces Islam, he will be as deserving of execution as the person who has renounced kufr to become a Muslim and again has chosen the way of kufr. All the jurists of Islam agree with this decision. On this topic absolutely no difference exists among the experts of shari'ah."

Since you posted this here again, I offer my reply again:

That's a rather selective passage; moreover, wikipedia is not considered an authoritative source (albeit a convenient one). I can easily quote any of a number of Christian theologians past and present and claim that it represents all Christian beliefs. And we know that even religious interpretation evolve over time.

The NYT Public Editor [in addressing Luttwak's op ed piece] consulted a number of practicing, noted experts and wasn't selective about their conclusions. Facts, reason, critical thinking.

But rumor mongers can wear very heavy filters and they can be persistent....

Let's think about it this way: How does Obama affiliate himself? Isn't up to him to define it? And if a candidate believes in principles that are consistent with what America is founded upon and aims to uphold the Constitution, shouldn't that be OK, regardless of his/her religion or non-religion? Isn't that what our founders intended?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:46 PM on 06/28/2008

So if Obama's dad was an atheist, then how could he be a Muslim according to your explanation? If Obama was born to an atheist how does that make him Muslim?

Well, golly gee, I guess the Clinton haters on this site will be unhappy to learn that the rumor did not generate from the Clintons after all and started long before any presidentiual run was considered. I am not surprised about where it seems to have started. I knew darn good and well when hearing him speak in 2004 that he would become a target of the right because he showed such promise the other side got scared of what he might evolve into. They probably have been running a stealth watch for years....and I bet when Karl Rove was still in the WH, and maybe even now, a more formal investigation such as wire taps, phone and email searches have been going on. I am way too cynical to trust they don't' have goods on any potential democratic candidate to spring on us in the fall. I think thqt may be how theyhave kept the democratic leadership in line, frankly. The real big brother moved in in 2000.

As an Obama supporter, but not a Clinton HATER, I never thought that the rumors started with Senator Clinton, and I don't recall that most of Obama's supporters thought this. I did believe however that Senator Clinton did not do enough, when she had the opportunity, to quell the rumor; and it was also widely known or suspected that it was the Clinton campaign that revealed the picture of Senator Obama in African garb. From this perspective, though they didn't start the rumor, it seems that they did exploit it.

To all of your other points, I agree wholeheartedly.
