Obama Supporters Adopting Middle Name "Hussein" As Their Own

Emily Nordling has never met a Muslim, at least not to her knowledge. But this spring, Ms. Nordling, a 19-year-old student from Fort Thomas, Ky., gave herself a new middle name on Facebook.com, mimicking her boyfriend and shocking her father.

"Emily Hussein Nordling," her entry now reads.

With her decision, she joined a growing band of supporters of Senator Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, who are expressing solidarity with him by informally adopting his middle name.

The result is a group of unlikely-sounding Husseins: Jewish and Catholic, Hispanic and Asian and Italian-American, from Jaime Hussein Alvarez of Washington, D.C., to Kelly Hussein Crowley of Norman, Okla., to Sarah Beth Hussein Frumkin of Chicago.

Jeff Strabone of Brooklyn now signs credit card receipts with his newly assumed middle name, while Dan O'Maley of Washington, D.C., jiggered his e-mail account so his name would appear as "D. Hussein O'Maley." Alex Enderle made the switch online along with several other Obama volunteers from Columbus, Ohio, and now friends greet him that way in person, too.

In Foreign policy and diplomacy ... it'd be smart to use that middle name... but McCain is Jealous of that.
Jealous because of his thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that occur when McCain realize that a valued relationship in foreign diplomacy threatened him as a rival... since with a middle name like Hussein, his rival would be best choice for to be the one capable to handle the US foreigns diplomacy.

I understand McCain... because he has to compete with an unconventional and outstanding candidate whose personality feet everywhere­... because of the heritage of his multi-racial and multi-cultural background ... This US candidate has everything McCain hasn't... and it's hard not to be jealous of him.

But if... this can make McCain feel better... either I, do have the Multi-cultural EXPERIENCE of Obama ... BUT I'M NOT JEALOUS...­. reason why I VOTE for HIM.... So, McCain, how will you face the 21st century?

Hussein is an Arabic name, not a Muslim name. Anyone, anybody can use it, just as anyone can use a Jewish name. There are lots of Arabs that are Christians with Arabic names.

I don't know the origin of the name, but Barack, spelled the same, though pronounced slightly differently means "peach" in Hungarian. So to me, it always sounds sweet.

It took a while for the Times article to properly credit Stephanie Miller for popularizing the idea. So much for the minimization of progressive talk radio that the non-reality based right wing world would like to proffer. Even with being outnumbered nearly 9 to 1 in outlets, (not to mention in wattage) the influence of progressive talkers like Stephanie Miller, Randi Rhodes, Tom Hartman and Rachel Maddow is increasing each week. This is old news. When people first started making a big deal out of his middle name, a lot of his supporters on my.BarackO­bama (including myself) started using Hussein in their display name to show that not only did they not care about his middle name, but that they embraced it.

I loved Kennedy but never considered adopting Fitzgerald as my name to show I didn't care that he was Roman Catholic when that was an issue in the election.

There is no comparison in these two cases. Kennedy was Irish Catholic. He had an Irish name. Obama is Christian, but has an Arabic middle name which the Republicans are trying to use as a smear. No one ever used Fitzgerald as a smear against Kennedy.

Many bigoted and uninformed people wrongly believe that Hussein is a Muslim name. It is not, it is an Arabic name and a beautiful one at that. However, having the name does not make one a Muslim.

What is weird is that people would actually try to associate the name with one evil person and neglect to recognize all the good people who share the name.

This a brilliant strategy for taking yet another weapon the Republicans thought they could use against Obama. How silly. The young people who started this make me very proud.

Barack is his birth name. His family called him Barry. My name is Ashante but my family calls me Shanna. I hated my name. ( This was before Ashanti the singer came out) Every one called me everything under the book. I tols my mom I wanted to change my name she said for what. At that moment she started calling me Ashante and demanded everyone else to do the same. In "Dreams of My Father" I related to Obama on this issue when his teacher questioned if he want to be call Barry or Barack. He hated his name until someone else took pride in it.
