Bush

The New Yorker's Seymour Hersh reports on how the Bush Administration has stepped up covert operations against Iran:

Late last year, Congress agreed to a request from President Bush to fund a major escalation of covert operations against Iran, according to current and former military, intelligence, and congressional sources. These operations, for which the President sought up to four hundred million dollars, were described in a Presidential Finding signed by Bush, and are designed to destabilize the country's religious leadership. The covert activities involve support of the minority Ahwazi Arab and Baluchi groups and other dissident organizations. They also include gathering intelligence about Iran's suspected nuclear-weapons program.

Clandestine operations against Iran are not new. United States Special Operations Forces have been conducting cross-border operations from southern Iraq, with Presidential authorization, since last year. These have included seizing members of Al Quds, the commando arm of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and taking them to Iraq for interrogation, and the pursuit of "high-value targets" in the President's war on terror, who may be captured or killed. But the scale and the scope of the operations in Iran, which involve the Central Intelligence Agency and the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), have now been significantly expanded, according to the current and former officials. Many of these activities are not specified in the new Finding, and some congressional leaders have had serious questions about their nature.

Under federal law, a Presidential Finding, which is highly classified, must be issued when a covert intelligence operation gets under way and, at a minimum, must be made known to Democratic and Republican leaders in the House and the Senate and to the ranking members of their respective intelligence committees--the so-called Gang of Eight. Money for the operation can then be reprogrammed from previous appropriations, as needed, by the relevant congressional committees, which also can be briefed.

I don't see the connection between Plame and this. Plame was outed as political retaliation, this is just information we should all know about our government's intentions and actions against another soveriegn country. This is the kind of lawless crap that got most of the third world to hate us in the first place, and drives recruitment into terrorist anti-american groups worldwide. As far as I'm concerned it's aiding and abetting our enemies, and making the US less safe from retaliation.
It's time to get a shorter, stronger leash on the CIA. It;s obvious that having no oversight or accountability has made them a rogue terrorist group themselves, subject only to the ideological whims of a president and Congress willing to look the other way, an illegal and immoral act itself.
The Constitution is the law of this country. All government departments and all US citizens should be held to account for their actions.
Abolish the CIA-

I'm glad someone is exposing what the president of Iran, Ahmadinejad has been saying is going on. That our beloved America is using covert ops to over throw his government. But we Americans have been kept in the dark as usual the last to know. All of this for OIL, not because he is a dictaor and represses his people OIL plain and simple. More lies from the Bushies.

If Bush attacked Iran, you'd see massive protests in the streets unlike we've seen in decades. There were large protests against the Iraq war, but those would be increased 10 fold for an attack against Iran.

An attack on Iran is very troubling, and yet a very real possibility.

My biggest fear is that this solely an election year ploy -- I am the last one to believe in conspiracy theories, but I wouldn't put it past this administration to attack Iran in October before the election.

If this happens, people will assume McCain would be the best to handle this new war and vote him in for president.

The far-reaching effects of that decision cannot be understated, especially in the Supreme Court.

why would people assume that an ex-navy pilot, who crashed several planes during his career and came in at the bottom of his class at the academy, would be equipped to become the commander in chief of this nation's entire military? what has he done that would qualify him for such a thing? if anything, i would think that because of his track record militarily speaking, he should be someone we cross OFF the list of leaders in time of "war."

i put the word "war" in quotes because none of our actions have yet to be formally declared a war by our cowardly congress. they seem to think that if we call it something else, it will be something else.

You all are right. I don't assume that McCain would be the best. However, polls have shown that the only issue McCain leads in is in Terrorism and War Handling. Thus, if we are thrust into another, God forsaken war, that could move that issue right to the top of people's minds and put him into office.

Just when we thought Bush/Cheney/AIPAC couldn't be more suicidally disastrous and incompetent, here they go again. We should all do all we can to start a furious national protest movement to stop these maniacs at the pass, if possible. But since they are so used to their fascist mode of operation, they may be unstoppable before Obama's innauguration in January. The only consolation is that if these fools bomb Iran and give Hillary's "hard-working, WHITE voters" of the silent majority $10 or $15 at the pump, and wipe out their savings by imploding world stock markets, and give them 10% unemployment with a massive world depression--all inevitable results of attacking Iran--there will then be such outrage against AIPAC's malign influence on American foreign policy and the encouragement of Bush/Cheney fascism in foreign policy that it will become political poison in America to be a candidate with the potential to be directed by the Israel Lobby in any way.

No wonder America isn't respected in the world anymore, they don't practice what they preach. These new covert ops that were discovered are all part of the Neo Con's plan to invade another country for it's oil reserves. The military is overstretched and Bush and his minions are planning another war. But why should they care ? They are to old to serve and unemployement is high, especially in poor areas so these kids will enlist to make a living. That's another reason why they don't have an energy plan. the only plan they have to " kill people for oil" The elite's kids won't have to worry even if McSame gets elected and re institutes the daft. This is just appalling. When will the sheep in this country wake up?

from marketwatch.com blog :
Yesterday...Israel and Jordan opened the Allenby bridge....

This bridge is only opened in times of Diplomatic urgency between the 2 countries...

Last time it was opened in such a manner was 3 days before the onslaught of the second Gulf War..

Rumors out of the region are that the Israeli's are requesting air space from Jordan in order to attack Iran's nuclear program...as rumor has it..the Jordians agree in principle..although the sides haven't agreed to the financial compensation to Jordan for the air space..
The Tel Aviv TASE..(the dow of Israel)..is trading down almost 3% since the bridge was opened..The TASE is the best indicator for determining potential military conflicts..
This bit of alarming news is pushing Crude Oil upwards..

Another way to bring democracy to the MI is open up targets & funnel money $$$ to mercenaries and soldiers of fortune. A.k.a. as good work if you can get it.

The idea that "nobody likes war" is a fallacy. If Iran is like Iraq it is already open season for war opportunist, merecenaries, contractors, S.o.F. et al...to run rampant through that country prior to official acts of war.

Will Iran be the next 'October Surprise'?. Don't put it past good ole 'w'. Bush has been 99% politics. He cheated to get elected in 2000. The 'Swifties' carried the day for him in '04. Now, to complete the trifecta, 'w' will take action in Iran and try to, once again, scare the heck out of us. All in hopes that the American people will see John McCain as their 'national security savior'. McCain is not qualified! General Wesley Clark is right on the mark. McCain lacks the tempermment, the intellect and the experience to lead this country in any anti-terror effort.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:53 AM on 06/30/2008

I agree with you and if Wesley Clark a General says it it must be true. Andrea (Greenspan) Mitchell and Mika were upset by his remarks this am on morning Joe, saying people shouldn't be criticizing McCain's military service. A caller called in and asked where was the outrage when John Kerry and Max Clealan were crucified in attacks about their military service? Wesley Clark is right in all he said and is saying about McSame. Remember before and at the start of the Iraq war if you even questioned or criticized any aspect of the war, the Neo Cons said you weren't supporting the troops or weren't being patriotic? This just more of the same garbage of fear and intimidation.

No one was specifically mentioned, and I am quite sure Iran knows that the US is doing things in its territory. Just about every non-western country knows the US will do what it wants inside its territory. Its a big part of belief the rest of the world has about the US; that she is an arrogant hypocrite.

Very True....

Sad that a story like Valerie Plame -- who wasn't an undercover agent -- would get calls for resignation, impeachment, and criminal neglect. Yet something as simple as telling our actual convert plans in a enemy country, talking about actual and current operations gets lauded in the press and here.

Scary to think that the left doesn't have the judgement -- and certainly doesn't have the composure to lead this country.

One thing that bothers me the most, however, is that almost every problem we have in the Middle East can be traced back the the CIA/USA interference in Middle East governments like in Iran and Iraq to secure cheap oil.
