ABC Family Seeks A Makeover Through Condoms, Beer, And Sex

"The Secret Life of the American Teenager," a coming cable drama, opens with a 15-year-old getting pregnant at band camp. Subsequent scenes depict two teenagers, each asking adults for free condoms.

And those are the nice kids. To rebuff an invitation to a church dance, the school's resident party girl wraps her arm around a boy and sneers, "My mom is out of town, so we're going over to my house to drink beer and have sex." She's not joking, as a later scene emphasizes.

A new offering from MTV? Not even close. "American Teenager" is the latest from ABC Family, the Walt Disney Company's cable channel aimed at older teenagers and young adults.

ABC Family hopes the show, along with the established teenage soap opera "Greek" and a coming mini-series called "Samurai Girl," will complete its makeover into a year-round, top-rated channel, something it has long sought but never quite accomplished.

So when will the "700 Club" abandon ABC Family & its bigger audience than it had when Preacher Pat ran it? Disclaimers or not viewers of the "700 Club" won't want to wade through condom & beer commercials to catch Preacher Pat's words. ABC Family's sponsors & program style are designed to drive fundies from tuning in to ABC Family for any reason. The take from Preacher Pat's "700 Club" begatons which are aired on ABC Family will continue to slip as fundies avoid ABC Family. ABC Family's newer secular viewers will be repelled by Preacher Pat & crew's spiels & constant begathons. Preacher Pat will be forced to remove the "700 Club" from ABC family if he can't get bucks for his begathons from ABC Family's viewers. The "700 Club" & CBN aren't low overhead operations such as Gen Booth's Salvation Army or the 2008 SA. Even the SA uses street preaching, bands & hymn singing sparingly in 2008. While the Salvation Army hasn't changed its message, it delivers its message to its target audience in newer ways.
Preacher Pat will have to go where fundies gather. Fundies won't gather at ABC Family any more
