Black Republicans Launch Racial Anti-Obama Ads

The National Black Republican Association has launched the most personalized attacks of the presidential campaign to date, accusing Barack Obama of being an "arrogant elitist," and raising his connections to Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers and Tony Rezko.

In three radio spots that the organization modestly claims are "eye-opening," the NBRA goes where its GOP counterparts have not: throwing the kitchen sink at Obama -- including racial references -- in hopes that something sticks. "Racist Democrats declared they would vote for a 'yellow dog' before a Republican because the Republican Party was the party for blacks," one ad states. "Racist Democrats will not vote for Obama, a black man."

In another 60-second spot entitled "Arrogant Obama," the narrator states:

"Bitter is what Obama called blacks and whites who love God. Racist is what Obama called his white grandmother who raised him and made sacrifices so Obama could get a good education and become a millionaire. Obama's friends are terrorist Bill Ayers and Rev. Wright who said innocent Americans deserved to die on September 11th. Obama is an arrogant elitist who turned his back on poor blacks and his own country."

From another spot, entitled "Radical Obama":

"Look beyond Barack Obama's skin color and soaring rhetoric and you will see an arrogant, elitist millionaire whose voting record is the most liberal in Congress. Look at the people around Obama, and you will understand that Obama lacks the judgment to be our next president. Obama's mentor for 20-years was Rev. Jeremiah Wright who said innocent Americans deserved to die on September 11th. Obama's 20-year friend and bagman was Tony Rezko who was recently convicted of fraud."

The ads, according to an NBRA press release, will air on radio stations in battleground states. But what kind of affect they'll have (or seriousness with which they'll be regarded) is in serious doubt.

For starters, the NBRA is targeting African Americans -- a constituency deeply committed to Obama -- with hopes of getting 25 percent of the black vote. That, objectively, would be a minor miracle for the GOP, which is staring at massive losses among the constituency. Secondly, there is no word yet as to the extent of the group's ad buy, and calls to find out went unreturned.

As a black man living in America, it's sad and yet laughable that there could actually be people who are smearing the name of Barack Obama. He didn't call his grandmother racist he said that growing up she said things about blacks that were horrible. Rev. Wright didn't say that the American people who died deserved it, he said that God was punishing the country. I'm in no way saying that blacks should vote for Obama simply because he's black, but there is no need to have the "house n***a" mentality either. The divide and conquer scheme won't work and it's sad that the NBRA trumps up Dr. King to inspire a turn to the Republican Party, as if by flashing his picture across the screen will trump up nostalgia and make us "see the light."

History tells us that the Republican party freed the slaves - Lincoln - but it took 2 years for many Southern blacks to know they were free, additionally, Lincoln did it to win the war not because of any moral convictions - strength in numbers was the plan.

Additionally, the two members of the NBRA should hide in shame - I think one of them might be former MD. Lt. Gov. S T E E L E - a DC native who turned his back on poor blacks in his hometown.

But the Republican party has helped to make that possible because they continue to openly support racists and racist ideologies in their party. Huckabee would have been an interesting candidate for the Republicans because he is one of the few Republicans who is calling the party to task on its recent racist past and he has had a lot of appeal for black persons in Arkansas.

I can literally count the number of black Republicans in America on my left hand. We shouldn't pay too much attention to this minuscule group of self-haters as they are overwhelmingly outnumbered in their community, the same as those gay Repubs (not counting the GOP closet types like the nationally disgraced Larry Craig). However, we must endeavor to fight these kind of smears and discredit the people who are behind it.

I think the more important news that HuffPost should be talking about is Colin Powell's likely endorsement of Obama and how record turnouts in the African American community in November for Obama has the potential to turn many red states in the south blue or at least purple for the first time in over quarter century.

They are not a national organization. Just some folks in a mall in Florida. The Chairman Frances Rice apparently uses the organization as a self promotion vehicle. Her entire board resigned a while back for reasons related to her egomaniacal management style. They operate essentially as a 527 through their affiliate the National Black Republican Federation. While they have no official connection to the Republican Party, Ms Rice is on an RNC committee. I would just bet they have back door funding from the RNC.
