Black Republicans Launch Racial Anti-Obama Ads

The National Black Republican Association has launched the most personalized attacks of the presidential campaign to date, accusing Barack Obama of being an "arrogant elitist," and raising his connections to Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers and Tony Rezko.

In three radio spots that the organization modestly claims are "eye-opening," the NBRA goes where its GOP counterparts have not: throwing the kitchen sink at Obama -- including racial references -- in hopes that something sticks. "Racist Democrats declared they would vote for a 'yellow dog' before a Republican because the Republican Party was the party for blacks," one ad states. "Racist Democrats will not vote for Obama, a black man."

In another 60-second spot entitled "Arrogant Obama," the narrator states:

"Bitter is what Obama called blacks and whites who love God. Racist is what Obama called his white grandmother who raised him and made sacrifices so Obama could get a good education and become a millionaire. Obama's friends are terrorist Bill Ayers and Rev. Wright who said innocent Americans deserved to die on September 11th. Obama is an arrogant elitist who turned his back on poor blacks and his own country."

From another spot, entitled "Radical Obama":

"Look beyond Barack Obama's skin color and soaring rhetoric and you will see an arrogant, elitist millionaire whose voting record is the most liberal in Congress. Look at the people around Obama, and you will understand that Obama lacks the judgment to be our next president. Obama's mentor for 20-years was Rev. Jeremiah Wright who said innocent Americans deserved to die on September 11th. Obama's 20-year friend and bagman was Tony Rezko who was recently convicted of fraud."

The ads, according to an NBRA press release, will air on radio stations in battleground states. But what kind of affect they'll have (or seriousness with which they'll be regarded) is in serious doubt.

For starters, the NBRA is targeting African Americans -- a constituency deeply committed to Obama -- with hopes of getting 25 percent of the black vote. That, objectively, would be a minor miracle for the GOP, which is staring at massive losses among the constituency. Secondly, there is no word yet as to the extent of the group's ad buy, and calls to find out went unreturned.

Is it someone who doesn't like to ride in the front of the bus, someone who never gained from affirmative action, someone who thought lynchings were a form of Capital Punishment, or is it someone that doesn't believe in their right to vote. Your post is so incredibly lacking of any understanding of history it is almost worse than the ads posted above.

You are citing historical examples yet you don't seem to understand what actually took place during that time and which party was doing what. Perhaps a simple history book (grade school would probably do it) would be helfpul to you..

The parties have switched around throughout history to be sure. However the historical examples you cite do not favor your theory. Please look up the voting record on the issues you cite and come back and explain which party was on the right side.

I'll give you a hint - The Dems fought many of the civil rights you list with everything they had.

It's really very simple. The votes are presevered for all time. There's no debating how the voting went down in Congress. It's just a simple fact.

Black Republicans hope for a realignment that will put them back at the center of power. Had Colin Powell run for president in 2000 that scenario could have taken place.

A little history: Republicans were not the perpetrators of lynchings. During Reconstruction the Republican Party elected many black legislators throughout the South. Lynchings were usually instigated by the local white power structure and carried out by the hoi polloi while humble white Christian folk like my own ancestors sat by as if they were not responsible. I do not say this out of guilt. It is historical fact. For a vivid description read "Strange Fruit" by Lillian Smith -- Reynal & Hitchcock Publishers, New York: 1944.

The White Citizens Party was LBJ's "Solid South" that was a bloc for the Democrats until the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act created a shift making the Republican Party what the Democratic Party had been, a bastion of segregation. In a segregated society there will be those who engage opportunism while looking with disdain at the underclass.

And it was the Democratic Party that became the party of Equality and Justice during the Civil Rights Era. The South turned against the Democrats as a result. The Southern Strategy used coded language to communicate their opposition to Civil Rights and progressive causes in order to get Republicans elected. As someone else posted earlier, these advertisements are not really aimed at Black Democrats. These ads are designed to stir whites' latent racism. It may work with some, but the efforts to end segregation had the effect of opening the minds of people to one another's commonalities. We are becoming a more perfect union, and Barack Obama represents progress. Even my 12 year old daughter commented on the fact that it makes no sense to call a party racist when their candidate is African American.
