Still find Connery to be the gold standard.

I've seen every bond film since Dr. No first played in the theaters. Wow, that's forty-six years. Craig is a worthy successor to the Bond legacy which I hope continues for the rest of my life.
I do, though, have a special fondness for On Her Majesty's Secret Service not because of Lazenby who was just competent as Bond but because of John Barry's marvelous score and the bewitching, lovely Diana Rigg.

And then there's the only person to sing a title song not twice, but three times, Shirley Bassey. My favorite is Diamonds Are Forever. I have to admit I bailed on the last couple Bonds before Casino. Just couldn't take it anymore. I wonder how many people have seen the original Casino, the spoof back in the 60s with Peter Sellers. Not so good but a great song by Dusty Springfield, The Look of Love.

I have the original Casino Royale on DVD and love it . I think, though, you have to have lived through the sixties to truly enjoy it. Not only was there Dusty Springfield but some great tunes played by Herb Alpert, all composed by Burt Bacharach if memory serves.

I agree, OHMSS was a good film. One can only imagine how great it would have been with Connery. As a fan from the beginning, I have always been disappointed with many of the choices the producers made. Felix was never the same actor, Blofeld was continually changing, Charles Gray made two Bond appearances (horrible each time), Burt Kwouck appeared twice as different characters, stirred, not shaken was an obvious mistake in You Only Live Twice, and far too many sequences were speeded up. Having watched the early films again recently, I feel there was much that was sloppy and lazy, such as overuse of rear screen projection and the mismatches between location and studio shots. Thanks to John Barry, the music was always an essential ingredient, something which the producers of Never Say Never Again apparently didn't understand. Despite their shortcomings, the films have always had a wit and style that make them enjoyable.

Craig returns Bond to the lethal Bond of Dr. No & From Russia with Love. Even when Connery began playing it lighter, there was always a lethal undercurrent absent from the pretenders who came after.
For me Connery will always be Bond, but Casino Royale has become my favorite Bond film. As for the criticism that Bond is imitating Bourne, the formula began in 1962 with Dr. No.

More than a lick of Bourne in there.

I never thought anyone could equal Connery or a Bond movie equal the first 5 or 6. Casino Royale proved me wrong. Craig plays it without the cartoonishness of the other Bonds, and Casino had an actual script, something that is sadly lacking in most of our present special effects spectaculars. I actually find many older horror films much more scary because they knew how to build the tension without a lot of stupid banter. Case in point, House on Haunted Hill.

I don't know why they are making my Bond man vulnerable. He was never in question from his sense of character. What is with this actress Mam? She is very odd. He can tell the difference between his friends and his enemies. On the other hand, these days, who can tell the difference really?

I think Craig is an excellent Bond, but that is because the movie he was in (and the next one appears to be the same) was how Bond was initially written. He was not smooth and classy as he has been previously portrayed. Rather, he is rough and aggressive and only later on becomes a bit more like the Bond portrayed by Connery, Moore or Brosnan.

After seeing Layer Cake I became a Craig fan. By now the Bond movies defy criticism, either you're into the genre or not.

He played an excellent role in The Road to Perdition. A complete opposite of his portrayal as James Bond.

Any doubt of Craigs ability to be Bond?

I should hope not.

If he walked in the room, most bad guys would run, or surrender. Especially if they heard the theme music.....
