MTV wants its MP3s.

The network today is expected to announce a $50 million push into selling downloadable songs in the open source, iPod-friendly format through its Rhapsody digital-music service, a joint venture with Seattle-based Real Networks.

The move - which includes deals with all four major record labels - will broadly expand the number of companies selling music in MP3 via Rhapsody well beyond just MTV, creating more competitive rivals for Apple Inc.'s iTunes in the process.

Rhapsody also serves as the outsourced digital-music retail solution for online giant Yahoo!, and in connection with today's announcement, the company will unveil additional deals with Verizon Wireless and Ticketmaster's music-oriented social network, iLike.
