Wes Clark Top

** UPDATE BELOW **

Despite heavy criticism, Gen. Wesley Clark is standing by his statement this weekend that Sen. John MCain's military experience doesn't qualify him to be commander-in-chief.

"I certainly honor his service as a prisoner of war," Clark said of McCain on Sunday. "But he hasn't held executive responsibility. That large squadron in the Navy that he commanded -- that wasn't a wartime squadron. He hasn't been there and ordered the bombs to fall."

That statement from Clark has come under withering criticism from McCain's campaign and was rejected by Sen. Barack Obama, both of whom (along with the media) distorted Clark's words by painting them as an attack on McCain's military service. (Notably, several U.S. veterans, including Iraq vet and VoteVets.org chairman Jon Soltz, and Lt. Gen. Robert Gard Jr. have come to Clark's defense.)

This evening, Clark issued a statement reiterating his respect for McCain's "courage and commitment to our country," as well as his belief that McCain's judgment on crucial national security issues has been deeply flawed:

"There are many important issues in this Presidential election, clearly one of the most important issues is national security and keeping the American people safe. In my opinion, protecting the American people is the most important duty of our next President. I have made comments in the past about John McCain's service and I want to reiterate them in order be crystal clear. As I have said before I honor John McCain's service as a prisoner of war and a Vietnam Veteran. He was a hero to me and to hundreds of thousands and millions of others in Armed Forces as a prisoner of war. I would never dishonor the service of someone who chose to wear the uniform for our nation.

"John McCain is running his campaign on his experience and how his experience would benefit him and our nation as President. That experience shows courage and commitment to our country - but it doesn't include executive experience wrestling with national policy or go-to-war decisions. And in this area his judgment has been flawed - he not only supported going into a war we didn't have to fight in Iraq, but has time and again undervalued other, non-military elements of national power that must be used effectively to protect America But as an American and former military officer I will not back down if I believe someone doesn't have sound judgment when it comes to our nation's most critical issues."

UPDATE: Via HuffPost's Sam Stein, Clark appeared tonight on MSNBC's Verdict with Dan Abrams:

Clark stood by his comments late Monday night on MSNBC, apologizing only for detracting from the "bigger issues."

"I honor John McCain's character," said Clark. "As I said in the show he's been on of my heroes for a long time. He's been over to my house. This is about the qualifications to be president. It is also about the nature of politics today that a comment can be taken out of context so much to create a hullaboo."

Clark stressed that when he initially suggested that McCain's time in Vietnam did not -- by itself -- qualify him to be president, he was speaking as his own agent and not on behalf of Barack Obama's campaign. In addition, he pointed some of the spotlight on the fact that one of McCain's surrogates in batting back the criticism was Bud Day, a member of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth organization that McCain once criticized.

"I think language of this type and this part of the discussion shouldn't be part of the campaign," he said. "I reject the idea that you take something like this and Swift Boat it all out of proportion."

Asked repeatedly by Abrams whether he was sorry for his statement, Clark did not offer an apology. He even playfully hinted that his remark couldn't have been all-too-controversial as it was first stated by CBS Face the Nation hoest Bob Schieffer: "It was a great line," he said, "I didn't make it up. It was given to me by the interviewer."

But Clark's appearance was clearly an effort to clarify the message that his earlier remark sent. And in the process, he threw in some lines of support for his candidate of choice: Obama.

"I think anybody who serves in uniform who serves their country in wartime and has gone through the hardships like John McCain should be honored for their character and courage," said Clark. "I think people look for character and courage in their pres, but I don't think you' have to have been at war to have shown character and courage. I think you can see that in other candidates. I think you can see that in Barack Obama's life."

Thank you, thank you, thank you, General Clark, for speaking the truth about McSame ... and for showing some real backbone & not limping away or backtracking from your comments. If Obama won't do it (he's too nice, I guess), I implore you to keep up the good work!!!

Actually in May the Associated Press filed a Freedom of Information Act and the record was made public. You might not of heard about it because no "bombshell" was found. You can google it to find out more if you like.

Oh! Please, please, Chairman Barry, keep rolling out your surrogate fellow travelers to tout McCain's LACK of expertise on ANYTHING! That just puts the spot light on the thing Barry is weakest.

Any evidence for your rant or are you just makin' stuff up again?

War Expert: Success will be easy.

Barry: No, it won't.

Who was the weak one again?

Again, FUBAR, your transparent and weak attempt to link Democrats with communists is hysterically funny---it perfectly represents your increasing desperation. "Fellow Travelers" is straight out of the McCarthy/John Birch playbook of the 50s.

It is also a shining example of the continued efforts by the paranoid right to impugn the patriotism of those who disagree with your far-right fascist agenda.

The Democratic candidate's name isn't Barry---that was the name of the losing right-wing candidate in 1964.

You really have nothing left but lies and smears---thanks for proving it.

Gen. Wesley Clark was top 5% at Westpoint, was shot 4 times and still gave orders in an incursion with the Vietcong for which he received the silver cross...

McCain's going to have problems going toe to toe with this guy

Not to worry.

He'll just send his lapdog Joe Lieberman to do all the lying and insinuation for him.

4 months in Viet Nam didn't qualify John Kerry to be president, either. I don't recall Wesley Clark being bothered by that.

And let us not forget that it was the interviewer who made that statement which has been cut out by the media to distort and deceive--Gen. Clark just disagreed with the statement.

MSNBC actually showed it.

I don't know what is up with their "bad word filter". Had two removed but had no "bad words" in it??? They need some tech support .. BADLY!

Let's try again. I wanted Clark to be president i '04. He is definitely the man. If being a POW qualifies you for being POTUS, there are a lot more out there.

Keep up the good work Wes and we will be behind you all the way.

Clark has every right to his opinion. However, saying McCain was shot down whille "riding" in a plane demeans all military pilots, not just McCain. It makes it seem as if he wasflying coach on Pan Am 103 or something. Not a good way to state an important opinion. Clark also stated McCain's executive experience was nil..that's fine, except Obama has none himself. Wesley Clark was a wonderful military man, but he is a political lightweight who should go off into the sunset and enjoy his retirement and military pension

Mccain was a lousy pilot. He would have been washed out long before his last flight had his Daddy not been an Admiral.

Given his lack of competence both academically and in actuality, does anyone really believe he'd had even joined the military if it wasn't in his family's history.

After all, according to him he didn't even love America until he was captured.

I heart you, Genl. Clark!!!

Isn't it astounding how the MSM can "overlook" all of McClone's flip-flops, gaffes, "misspeaks", lack of ethics & values, BOASTING & BRAGGING on himself (ONE thing a "true hero" NEVER does) - yet, let one person disagree with Mcshrub, and they are all on it like stink on pooh!!! This is going to drag on for 2 more weeks! Geeez!

Give me a break! Clark was saying just a few months ago that H I L L A R Y was more qualified to be POTUS because she had been first lady and.......well, I guess if you want to be paid you now flip over and say that the other candidate is not qualified because he didn't have as much experience as a first lady.

How much do they pay these guys?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:47 AM on 07/01/2008

Nothing. There was no payment to General Clark for his words. Stop making up stories that slander people's character. Geez...you conservatives are something else.

I believe Gen Clark's comments raises a bigger issue -- do we need a president who has a lot of experience / decision making or one who is a leader? If we get both, that would be ideal. If we look purely at executive decision making experience, Mitt Romney and Huckabee would be ahead -- but are they good leaders who can galvanize the entire population to action in a particular direction? And then we will have an unending debate about who has more relevant 'decision making' capabilities. In ancy case, judgment capabilities have a precedence to decision making capabilities -- without the former, the latter will be useless.
We need a leader who can manage rather than a manager who may lead. We certainly don't want anyone who cannot manage and can lead us in the wrong direction -- that would be our current Mr. President.
The fundamental message is this -- we need a President who has goog judgment to do the right thing, and has the humility to see when a wrong decision/judgment has been made and quickly takes corrective and hopefully preventive actions. John McCain didn't have the judgment nor the humility to admit that he was and is wrong. His current policies will not lead to peace anywhere in the world in 100 years!!

But experience/decision making is a big part of being a leader. So I would say yes.

The Talking Heads sound stupider and stupider. And that's hard to believe given their long run of superficial blather and lack of depth or real insight. Wes Clark is asked whether he doesn't think being shot down in a fighter plane and imprisoned doesn't qualify him to be Commander in Chief and he says no. So what's the issue? I once was in a ski boat on Lake Meade that was swamped and had to spend 4 hours on an island waiting to be rescued. McCain's experience deserves my praise; mine proves that, in my youth I am capable of making foolish mistakes. But what about either of our experiences shows that we can do a good job at being president of the US. Even Grant, who was a successful general made a lousy president. Eisenhower played golf through his 8 years. I think Clark is more fit to lead this country than McCain.

I hope to hell he doesn't shut up. Someone needs to show Democrats how to fight back.

And the Clintons didn't shoot him in the back. Please get your facts straight. (Nor IMO did Barack just do so.... although I think his disavowing Clark's words was way too panicky.)

I am glad to see this MAN (Gen. Clark) has guts to stick by what he said. The truth is John McCain refuses to release his military record that he speaks so proudly about. Many of us know the truth about John McCain's military record, but it is time he releases it to the public. What is he hiding?

The record shows he crashed 5 planes... so much for being a Navy pilot.

I suspect the record may show that Mc'Cain was NOT shot down in Vietnam but that he crashed another plane and that is how he ended up being captured. There is also some controversy about whether he really did refuse to be released if his fellow prisoners didn't get released too. If either of those turn out to be true, he can kiss his "hero" status goodby.

And he was the bottom of his class. And he was given special treatment as the son and grandson of Admirals. And he still couldn't make admiral.

I think of it like this: If I was going into a bar room brawl, I would choose a young John McCain over Obama any day. But for President, I want someone I think can engage, intellectually, leaders of other nations. I want a person that not only respects the Constitution, but actually has studied (and taught) it. I agree wholehearteldy with Wes Clark that while McCain's service was courageous and admirable (and even unbelieveable) it does not give him knowledge of the rest of the world and issues of national security simply for having been throught it. It just doesn't. At the end of the day, he is still an out of touch war monger of second rate intelligence.
