RENO, Nev. (AP) _ Dennis Haysbert likes to believe his portrayal as the first African-American U.S. president on Fox's "24" may have helped pave the way for Barack Obama.

"If anything, my portrayal of David Palmer, I think, may have helped open the eyes of the American people," said the actor, who has contributed $2,300 to the Illinois Democrat's presidential campaign.

"And I mean the American people from across the board _ from the poorest to the richest, every color and creed, every religious base _ to prove the possibility there could be an African-American president, a female president, any type of president that puts the people first," he said Tuesday.

Haysbert, who now stars on "The Unit" on CBS, made his comments to reporters during a teleconference call promoting the upcoming American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Lake Tahoe.

Haysbert, who also played Nelson Mandela in the 2007 film "Goodbye Bafana," said his role as President Palmer seemed to "confuse people" who would approach him on the street "every day, almost every hour, and ask me to run."

"I still, even after three seasons into `The Unit' playing Sgt. Maj. Jonas Blaine, I'm still asked by people on the street to run," he said.

Haysbert, 54, said he recently stopped for dinner south of Los Angeles with his daughter in Dana Point, Calif., a town he described as "very wealthy, very white and very Republican."

"I go into this little restaurant with that demographic and a lady comes up to me and says, `You know, I want to vote for you,'" he said. "I don't know if it is a joke or that people just like to say those things. But to me, for them to say it out loud means they are thinking about it."

Why don't someone give Sammie Davis Jr. credit. He played the first black president in Rufus Jones for President.

Oh Please, Lets have a Native American portrayed as a President on TV so my people will be considered serious when it comes to the highest office in the land. Give me a break. I do believe TV can influence people, but to say people are asking him to run for president because he played one on TV. I hope there isn't very many of these people voting.

well we need another show/movie starring someone with HRC's personality so "tough" women can get a shot at the WH.

Yeah sure you can take the credit Dennis, make sure that if Obama lose the elections he can go and follow your steps of selling Allstate car insurances, and we will be in good hands.

Please, let's be respectful of other people's religions. My apologies to the Joe-buites. lol.

Also, isn't he forgetting that Morgan Freeman was the first black media President in "Deep Impact" I mean sure, he let the Earth get hit by a meteor, so he was a little soft on security, but he immediately respnded with his "War on Meteorites" initiative, including an executive order allowing for the torture of meteorites.

I never saw 24, so Dennis Haysbert is a complete mystery to me. But I've watched Tiger Woods playing what used to be a rich white man's game with grace, elegance, and complete mastery. Why not say *he* paved Obama's way? Hmmmmm ... golf course ... television series ... politics ... of course! they're all interconnected! Of course. Yeah. Right.

Morgan Freeman in "Deep Impact" did it first.

And better.

Morgan Freeman was not the first Black to play President.

It is James Earl Jones as Douglass Dilman in the movie "The Man" 1972

I believe it, completely.
For years I have been listening to people talk about the issues in their lives and use examples from TV dramas to justify their actions.
Just ask any actor who has played a bad guy on a soap. They get assaulted on the street all the time.
