SEATTLE — Starbucks Corp. has announced it's closing 600 underperforming stores in the United States.

The Seattle-based premium coffee company also announced Tuesday it expects to open fewer than 200 new company-operated stores in the United States in fiscal 2009.

The company says it will try to place workers from closed stores in remaining Starbucks.

I owned a Ford, once - got run through the dealership/repair wringer. If this company were to go belly up I'd run right out and celebrate!

All went down hill once they went with automated machines..­.. Not to mention changing their logo to appease people who never bought their coffee anyway.

This should not come as a surprise to anyone. With the price of gas up over a dollar since last year, the cost of food way up and a large percentage of the population reigning in their spending, a daily latte is probably one of the first things to go.
