Fox News Photoshops Pictures Of New York Times Reporters In Response To Weekend "Hit Piece"

On the July 2 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends, co-hosts Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade labeled New York Times reporter Jacques Steinberg and editor Steven Reddicliffe "attack dogs," claiming that Steinberg's June 28 article on the "ominous trend" in Fox News' ratings was a "hit piece." During the segment, however, Fox News featured photos of Steinberg and Reddicliffe that appeared to have been digitally altered -- the journalists' teeth had been yellowed, their facial features exaggerated, and portions of Reddicliffe's hair moved further back on his head. Fox News gave no indication that the photos had been altered.

After putting up the photos of Steinberg and Reddicliffe, Fox & Friends also featured a photograph of Steinberg's face superimposed over that of a poodle, while Reddicliffe's face was superimposed over that of the man holding the poodle's leash.

Fox distorted the appearance of a newspaper staffer?

When I used to read newspapers - especially when I was young - I used to love to see what the newspaper caricaturists would draw to depict the newsmakers of the day.

Very seldom were these renderings flattering. These photoshopped pictures are tame by comparison.

I never really imagined that the bumblers and stumblers at Fox News could become even more childish than they have been up to now!

Nevertheless, I'm glad to see that Steve Ducey gave his kid Photoshop software for Christmas, because the expertise shown in the clever reworking of these two pictures shows a great talent that can only be attributed to Steve himself, who never fails to entertain America's least-astute TV News audience with his rapier-like wit and amazing razor-sharp intellect.

How has The Daily Show not scarfed up a gem like Ducey yet?

When this article first went up there was no mention that such tactics were employed in 1930's Germany (just as similar exaggerated drawings depicting Japanese with buck teeth and thick round spectacles were common in American publications in the 1940's) and the moderators on duty at the time did not see fit to post my own comments calling attention to this fact. I am glad to see that I am indeed not the only one who noticed this and that the moderators have since allowed comments drawing these parallels to be posted.

This is not merely a ham-handed display of puerile humor, it is the first step in degrading and dehumanizing a group of people so that when they are eventually discriminated against and ultimately persecuted, the public finds it easier to turn a blind eye. or all of those tempted to roll their eyes and say that such comparisons are hysterical and over the top, all I can say is that too was the reaction of most Germans in the 1930's. The cultivation of hatred and prejudice is a stealthy and seductive process which must be recognized and constantly guarded against lest history repeat itself.

Everyone should check themselves to see if these doctored pics make them feel journalists have more or less credibility. Then consider the ongoing (though not visual) degrading of scientists. Then ask yourself why some are so intent on undercutting the professional reputations and authority of these two groups.
