Actually it started with ball-players in the playground. Whether it be baseball, touch-football, but mostly basketball.
It was a way of shaking hands in greetings to one that had / already been on the court bouncing a ball that had / has grime on it.
Thus entered the fist-bump, elbow /forearm-bump, chest-bump for footballers wearing stick-um on their hands, etc.
You have to live it, to know or understand the custom.
For instance, I entered the playground to get in on a quick pick-up game of 3 on 3 and called next after last next. I'm eating some of "Sloppy Joe's" take-out french-fries with my finger-tips. The ball goes out of bounds, while the short time-out, I want to greet a friend already on the court playing.
Do I shake his hand with my ketchup, napkin barely wiping greasy fingers?
Will he shake my hand after bouncing a basketball through his last two 30 point wins?
