Living Limbaugh: $400 Million Contract, Gulfstream, Scented Candles, And The "Business" Of Hating Liberals

I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Rush Limbaugh

The New York Times Magazine has a big cover story on Rush Limbaugh this week, almost 8,000 words about how Rush Limbaugh has built himself into one of the most influential voices in America. With an estimated 14 million listeners (Limbaugh claims it's more like 20 million), he's far and away the top-rated radio talk-show host in America. That's partisan radio talk-show host — and he has no intention of being left out of this election. He already created big waves, first by publicly dissing John McCain and then by encouraging Republicans to mix into the democratic primaries and vote for Hillary Clinton and keep the Democratic nomination battle in play, in what he called "Operation Chaos." Both Karl Rove and John Kerry gave it credit for having had an effect.

Now Limbaugh has extended his contract through 2016 — $38 million per year with a "nine-figure signing bonus." The total package is valued at "north of $400 million."

Author Zev Chafets got more access to Limbaugh than any other journalist, being the first from the "hated mainstream media" to gain access to his studio and home. Here are some excerpts from the story:

Limbaugh on why he will reluctantly support McCain:
''It's like the Super Bowl...you root for the team you hate less. That's McCain.''

Limbaugh on how he plans to take on Obama:
''I'll approach Obama with fearless honesty...He's a liberal. I oppose liberals. That's all that's involved here.''

Limbaugh's tactics for doing so:
Chafets reports on Limbaugh's appointment of his associate, Bo Snerdly, as the "Official Obama Criticizer" of his show. "Snerdly introduced himself as an ''African-American-in-good-standing-and-certified-black-enough-to-criticize-Obama guy,'' and declared that he was speaking, ''on behalf of our E.I.B. brothers and sisters in the hood.'' The bit was typical Limbaugh -- confrontational, deliberately insensitive and funny. It was also a declaration of independence. Whatever special courtesies John McCain might plan to extend to Barack Obama, Limbaugh is going to conduct his air war, as he always has, by his own rules of engagement."

On Living Limbaugh: "There are five homes -- all of them his -- on the property. The big house is 24,000 square feet. Limbaugh lives there with a cat. He's been married three times but has no children."

Chafets on Limbaugh's domestic preferences: "His staff lights fragrant candles throughout the house to greet his arrival from work each day."

On the view from his private humidor:
"The room opens onto a patio, a putting green and a beach. On the table was a brochure for Limbaugh's newest airplane, a Gulfstream G550. It cost him, he told me, $54 million."

Limbaugh on success: ''Do you know what bought me all this?...Conservatism didn't buy this house. First and foremost I'm a businessman."

Limbaugh on his substance abuse: ''You know, I've had a problem with substance abuse. I don't deal with the future anymore. I take things one day at a time.''

What you see when you walk into Limbaugh's nondescript studio headquarters: "An American flag stands in the corner. Only a small, framed picture of Limbaugh, bearing the caption ''America's Anchorman,'' reveals that this is the headquarters of one of the country's most admired and reviled figures."

The full story will be online here shortly.

Once in a while one of these weasels lets the truth slip out (see above).

Their overarching fear and their nightmare:

Oh, no! These liberals are going to take all my money!!!

Someone is always after their money...for 50 years it was the godless Commies...now it's the "liberals,"...meanwhile, the ones who actually ARE taking their money (the Chaneys of the world, the "Reverends," etc.) have convinced these poor slobs they are their allies...What a hoot!

By saying you are welcome, you presume to take God's role. The devil did that wrt Job, with one caveat, that he not kill Job. And all of what the devil did was for naught, except to teach Job. That God can provide so much that he has room for you is glorious. That you would destroy every good thing on earth is your own shame. Life is about choices.

When Reagan had his 3 new FCC appointees declare the Fairness Doctrine Unconstitutional,

as if they were a high court empowered to do so, it gave birth to Hate Radio and Propaganda TV.

Early in 2009, we need to return with a stronger new Fairness Doctrine & put a stop to this Bu$&!t.

Rush is on 600 plus radio stations owned by conservative media conglomerate, Clear Channel Radio. Clear Channel buys up radio stations, they own 70% of all stations around the country. They make sure to put Rush on everywhere. In some areas he can be heard on 3 different stations at the same time. His competition both conservative and liberal alike are not provided the same opportunities.

What Clear Channel has done is created a monopoly, for their talent and hindered competition. That's against the basic rules of capitalism.

Rush didn't earn anything. He's been given an unfair advantage by people with an agenda.

What's good for Rush is not good for America. Reducing the level of political discourse to mud wrestling is bad for democracy.

If the highest paid most listened to radio personality in America was telling everyone to hate on conservatives and monkeying with the Republican Primary how long would that stand?

Would it be rationalized away by conservatives as a product of the market place? I highly doubt it.

Kudos, LaBelAge!
Clear Channel is a blight on the marketplace, with their ugly billboards and airing this carnival-barker everywhere, feeding the basest prejudices and ignorance of a vocal minority.
14 million (or even 20 million) listeners in a nation of over 300 million is a paltry sampling if you ask me. I've listened to this guy off and on for years, and I can't figure out what the attraction is.
He's no different from the late Joe Pyne in his politics, less eloquent than Paul Harvey, and as funny as a colonoscopy. He panders to and exploits the anger and frustration of people who cannot relate to the America of the 21st century, and who still cling to the fantasy "Leave It To Beaver" ethos they falsely recall from the sainted '50s; you know, that wonderful era when black people knew their place, gay people didn't exist and teenagers never had sex...
I just know that Rush is a secret contributor to Barack Obama's campaign, 'cause he knows that electing Obama will keep his doddering fans tuning in daily to hear him slander the new president!
It's sad that there are so many advertisers making money off this clown. But it makes me feel good when I am able to avoid any company that is complicit in his shameful schemes.
I'm not a religious person, but I do tend to believe in karma and, trust me, one of these days, Rush's crimes will come back to haunt him.

Though the stations are ponying up big cash to keep him on the air, there are less listeners every day, because now some of them are aware that they should be embarrassed. Shame is guiding them into the light. Ironic.

Only the incapable will remain. The lowest of us. Our monsters, of which there are a handful. We can take 'em. They're mean, self-hating and mentally weak.

We can take 'em. They are actually and technically inferior to the rest of the good Americans.

On Green960 or Air America it is I read an article by " name inserted" from the "name inserted" , " google it, read it for yourself" ... If you can't source what you say then SHUT UP. I think it is tragic that a school teacher can get $30,000 a year or less and he gets this??? America is dead if this is how mass media works... Sad news. I came to the same conclusion about Conservative sites. They:

1. Provide no sources
2. Provide outdated sources
3. Provide links to other conservative sites mentioning the same story, as their source [instead of the "originating" source]

I traverse progressive AND conservative sites and find progressive sites are more adequately documented.

I've listened to Rush in the past. He does occasionally make some valid points; but he almost NEVER solidifies whatever point he's making with a LOGICAL CONCLUSION.

Example: Limbaugh was trying to give "Some Historical Perspective" in regards to countries
criticizing Israel for using excessive force in retaliation for the death and capture of Israeli soldiers. The article on his site:

"The US suffered around 92,000 battle deaths in the Pacific theater; the Japanese lost 1.59 million... "

He IMPLIES that the US (ALONE) inflicted 1.59 million casualties against Japan in retaliation for the US suffering 92,000 deaths. Readers/listeners, who do NOT KNOW any better, will take his word at "face value" and say to themselves "Hmmm. Rush is right. The US used excessive force against Japan during WWII and it couldn't be considered Proportional. So, I guess Rush is right once again".

What Limbaugh, did NOT take into account with the Japanese losses, is that they were at War from 1937 (not Dec. 1941, when the US entered). They suffered years of losses fighting in China and suffered losses from Allied forces BESIDES the Americans...!

no, we killed more, we nuked them 2 times. As to china who made up the AVG. The AVG did put off the Japaneses invasion.

When did China, Dutch, Philippines, UK, or Australia (except on New Guinea where they killed a few thousand) ever win a battle, or drop a bomb that killed a large number of Japanese? They lost huge numbers. The single night of March 9, 1945 killed more than 100,000 in a fire bombing of Tokyo. The Japanese knew exactly why "innocent" women and children were being killed killed so indiscriminately. There is a special place in hell for the mass killers, like General Curtis Lemay and the atomic bomb makers who actively lobbied to be allowed to attack the people of Japan. People who worked with him despised him, and sometimes thought he smelled of sulfur. The Nazis and Japanese air forces at their worse never killed a fraction as many. They specialized in mass murder in the prison camps.
