Living Limbaugh: $400 Million Contract, Gulfstream, Scented Candles, And The "Business" Of Hating Liberals

I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Rush Limbaugh

The New York Times Magazine has a big cover story on Rush Limbaugh this week, almost 8,000 words about how Rush Limbaugh has built himself into one of the most influential voices in America. With an estimated 14 million listeners (Limbaugh claims it's more like 20 million), he's far and away the top-rated radio talk-show host in America. That's partisan radio talk-show host — and he has no intention of being left out of this election. He already created big waves, first by publicly dissing John McCain and then by encouraging Republicans to mix into the democratic primaries and vote for Hillary Clinton and keep the Democratic nomination battle in play, in what he called "Operation Chaos." Both Karl Rove and John Kerry gave it credit for having had an effect.

Now Limbaugh has extended his contract through 2016 — $38 million per year with a "nine-figure signing bonus." The total package is valued at "north of $400 million."

Author Zev Chafets got more access to Limbaugh than any other journalist, being the first from the "hated mainstream media" to gain access to his studio and home. Here are some excerpts from the story:

Limbaugh on why he will reluctantly support McCain:
''It's like the Super Bowl...you root for the team you hate less. That's McCain.''

Limbaugh on how he plans to take on Obama:
''I'll approach Obama with fearless honesty...He's a liberal. I oppose liberals. That's all that's involved here.''

Limbaugh's tactics for doing so:
Chafets reports on Limbaugh's appointment of his associate, Bo Snerdly, as the "Official Obama Criticizer" of his show. "Snerdly introduced himself as an ''African-American-in-good-standing-and-certified-black-enough-to-criticize-Obama guy,'' and declared that he was speaking, ''on behalf of our E.I.B. brothers and sisters in the hood.'' The bit was typical Limbaugh -- confrontational, deliberately insensitive and funny. It was also a declaration of independence. Whatever special courtesies John McCain might plan to extend to Barack Obama, Limbaugh is going to conduct his air war, as he always has, by his own rules of engagement."

On Living Limbaugh: "There are five homes -- all of them his -- on the property. The big house is 24,000 square feet. Limbaugh lives there with a cat. He's been married three times but has no children."

Chafets on Limbaugh's domestic preferences: "His staff lights fragrant candles throughout the house to greet his arrival from work each day."

On the view from his private humidor:
"The room opens onto a patio, a putting green and a beach. On the table was a brochure for Limbaugh's newest airplane, a Gulfstream G550. It cost him, he told me, $54 million."

Limbaugh on success: ''Do you know what bought me all this?...Conservatism didn't buy this house. First and foremost I'm a businessman."

Limbaugh on his substance abuse: ''You know, I've had a problem with substance abuse. I don't deal with the future anymore. I take things one day at a time.''

What you see when you walk into Limbaugh's nondescript studio headquarters: "An American flag stands in the corner. Only a small, framed picture of Limbaugh, bearing the caption ''America's Anchorman,'' reveals that this is the headquarters of one of the country's most admired and reviled figures."

The full story will be online here shortly.

florixie is a Dittohead we can assume?
Think about it, these people are saying "you speak for me, he thinks for me, so that I need not think for myself."
He wouldn't last a minute one minute in a debate of free exchange. Imagine him an Noam Chomsky for instance.. I know, I know you don't know who that is.

It's no different than the knee-jerk lemming-like reaction that your HuffPosters have everytime there is a story about Limbaugh or O'Reilly.

Johnpherson... Everyone knows about assumptions. Yours holds true to the cliche. You know not what a "dittohead" is. You jump to a conclusion that magnifies your lack of understanding. I am not a dittohead, yet I know what it means. It is you and yours that get the steamroller for three hours a day. Chomsky was Obama in a different time. Baseless but sounding good. He is in the dustbin. Welcome him.

Hitler and Stalin were more powerful then Rush and probably had more money and influenced more people in their time, but that doesn't mean we admire him. Sure Rush has got the bucks. He's "good " at what he does. Rail against the liberals. That's his sthick and he's got it down cold.

A dispassionate look at Rush, and his "contribution" to our way of life, shows that he has essentially contributed nothing and has done nothing. The cop on the beat, or a grade school teacher has made allot more of a contribution to society in one week then Rush ever made in his life.

America was founded to get away from kings, but some people like royalty.

They are the least American amongst us.

I don't even have to read the other comments to know that Huffies heads are assploding.
When asked about making 400 million Rush is reported to have said, "well, everybody is entitled to a bad year."

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:04 PM on 07/02/2008

I don't think 400 million is a bad year...Howard Stern makes 200 million and Rush is twice as gross.

Read the article, y'all. It's 38 million a year plus a signing bonus; that's a 400 million-plus total over the span of ten years.

And whatever his masters are paying him, he's worth it. He's the greatest corporate figurehead since Mussolini. I suspect he'll meet a similar fate once his followers figure out he's been training them how to screw themselves...if they can figure it out. Who but an idiot would call himself a "Dittohead"?

hey genius,"400 million is a bad year"

400 million is pay for years through 2016 read the article. It is only 57.1 million dollars per year.

Howard Stern makes 100 million over 5 years, that is only 20 million dollars.year

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6190117

that means Howard Stern makes 35% of what Rush makes.

Howard Stern's is not a 1 year contract, now get your facts straight if you can.

wow, not 1 fact in your post was true.

Either you intended to mislead or you are a moron.

I'm impressed, good job

Liberals generally don't hate but many of us make an exception respecting conservatives...not because of their conservative ideas but because most conservatives are truly ignorant but they just don't get it. John Stuart Mill said it best some 150 years ago: "I never meant to say that Conservatives are generally stupid. I meant to say that stupid people are generally Conservative. I believe that is so obviously and universally admitted a principle that I hardly think any gentleman will deny it." Little has changed since the 1850s. If conservatives simply admitted their mean-spiritedness, selfishness, and ignorance I'm sure even the most hateful liberal would forgive them; as for ever accepting them...well, that's another matter.

You can't talk sense to a conservative. They blame the victim card as they sucker bunch you and throw dirt in your eye.

Hate is all they have at this point. They don't believe in anything of substance, but they can't admit it. That would mean re-evaluating their entire belief system, something they aren't emotionally or intellectually capable of doing.

The best they can do is rationalize their behaviour with the false belief that everyone does it. Everyone hates. Yadda Yadda liberals do it too. As if that someone makes it okay.

the difference is that I enjoy flaming liberals at will. When I am done I feel relaxed. The liberal is still mad after hours. If i even smile at them it starts the fury over again. I have no stress at all knowing that liberals exist. I just laugh at them when states they can not believe I had the nerve have my views on life, then fury starts again. I love life is so enjoyable.

Hard to imagine that hate filled rhetoric that helps to divide America is worth so much.

WHAT has become of our country that companies reward such hate?

What has become of our country that companies reward someone who LIES for a living?

Has the worship of the almighty dollar become so important that rewarding bigotry, lies and hate trumps all that is right and good about America?

Rome lasted longer than us and we will probably fall harder.

LiberalBuzz,
That was really well said. My first thought was also "all of that money for hate and lies". Gawd. How pathetic.

Limbaugh does have one redeeming quality ... he provides me with aerobic exercise. I have found that if I tune into his show for about 20 minutes, my heart rate goes up, my respiration goes up, and most of the muscles in my body tense up. After 20 minutes, I'm physically exhausted and I turn him off. Much cheaper than a gym membership.

So repeat after me, "high ratings means nothing other than a lot of people like to be spoonfed their worldviews to them rather than become educated to the truth"

Repeat.
