Living Limbaugh: $400 Million Contract, Gulfstream, Scented Candles, And The "Business" Of Hating Liberals

I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Rush Limbaugh

The New York Times Magazine has a big cover story on Rush Limbaugh this week, almost 8,000 words about how Rush Limbaugh has built himself into one of the most influential voices in America. With an estimated 14 million listeners (Limbaugh claims it's more like 20 million), he's far and away the top-rated radio talk-show host in America. That's partisan radio talk-show host — and he has no intention of being left out of this election. He already created big waves, first by publicly dissing John McCain and then by encouraging Republicans to mix into the democratic primaries and vote for Hillary Clinton and keep the Democratic nomination battle in play, in what he called "Operation Chaos." Both Karl Rove and John Kerry gave it credit for having had an effect.

Now Limbaugh has extended his contract through 2016 — $38 million per year with a "nine-figure signing bonus." The total package is valued at "north of $400 million."

Author Zev Chafets got more access to Limbaugh than any other journalist, being the first from the "hated mainstream media" to gain access to his studio and home. Here are some excerpts from the story:

Limbaugh on why he will reluctantly support McCain:
''It's like the Super Bowl...you root for the team you hate less. That's McCain.''

Limbaugh on how he plans to take on Obama:
''I'll approach Obama with fearless honesty...He's a liberal. I oppose liberals. That's all that's involved here.''

Limbaugh's tactics for doing so:
Chafets reports on Limbaugh's appointment of his associate, Bo Snerdly, as the "Official Obama Criticizer" of his show. "Snerdly introduced himself as an ''African-American-in-good-standing-and-certified-black-enough-to-criticize-Obama guy,'' and declared that he was speaking, ''on behalf of our E.I.B. brothers and sisters in the hood.'' The bit was typical Limbaugh -- confrontational, deliberately insensitive and funny. It was also a declaration of independence. Whatever special courtesies John McCain might plan to extend to Barack Obama, Limbaugh is going to conduct his air war, as he always has, by his own rules of engagement."

On Living Limbaugh: "There are five homes -- all of them his -- on the property. The big house is 24,000 square feet. Limbaugh lives there with a cat. He's been married three times but has no children."

Chafets on Limbaugh's domestic preferences: "His staff lights fragrant candles throughout the house to greet his arrival from work each day."

On the view from his private humidor:
"The room opens onto a patio, a putting green and a beach. On the table was a brochure for Limbaugh's newest airplane, a Gulfstream G550. It cost him, he told me, $54 million."

Limbaugh on success: ''Do you know what bought me all this?...Conservatism didn't buy this house. First and foremost I'm a businessman."

Limbaugh on his substance abuse: ''You know, I've had a problem with substance abuse. I don't deal with the future anymore. I take things one day at a time.''

What you see when you walk into Limbaugh's nondescript studio headquarters: "An American flag stands in the corner. Only a small, framed picture of Limbaugh, bearing the caption ''America's Anchorman,'' reveals that this is the headquarters of one of the country's most admired and reviled figures."

The full story will be online here shortly.

It's sad that Rush makes a living off lies, propoganda and innuendo, while the rest of us acutally work for a living. Let him keep huffing and puffing on those stinky cigars.

What I would like to know is why Limbaugh hates McCain but endorsed Hillary. There is even reports that Limbaugh had fundraisers for her. He has really dogged McCain over the last 8 years and constantly made fun of him.

Yes, and he is so influential that he couldn't prevent Mc Cain from getting the nomination. That's how seriously Republicans take him, forget about the Dems.

He should support Bob Barr -- operation chaos turned on the Republicans!

Donate small amounts to Bob Barr and get him on the ballot in all the swing states.

Seriously.

Limbaugh "will root for the team he hates less".... Even though Limbaugh doesn't like John McCain, he hates the Clintons in the highest degree.... Limbaugh "endorsed" Hillary over Obama because he perceives Obama to be more capable than Hillary to beat McCain in the general election....So we deduct that he just wanted, in his opinion, the weakest Democrat to go against McCain.

Limbaugh is a red bone and blood Republican after all, so don't expect him to honestly "endorse" any Democrat.

This man has had three divorces....he is incapable of unselfishly loving another person....I imagine he just doesn't like himself, so he doesn't have any happiness to share with somebody else.

He finds satisfaction and fulfillment in the lowest of human character traits: Hate.

Don't you feel sorry for him?

I wished the Air America folks were less comedic and did not try to imitate Comedy Central political gurus..... Whenever I want serious and decent journalism, I tune in to NPR....You will never, ever, hear Diane Rehm treat her guests the way Limbaugh and O'Reilly treat theirs....people on Diane's show are given respect and the time to express their views.

Limbaugh and O'Reilly, and their faithful listeners, deserve one another.
Limbaugh and O'Reilly.... what a waste of talent.

Limbaugh is a perfect example of PT Barnum's adage that you can't underestimate the intelligence of the American public. The fact Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern are top rated radio show host, should give everyone cause for concern. They are peddling unfiltered hatred.

Limbaugh maybe be a showman, but I feel sorry for the people that listen and actually believe his schtick. His lifestyle is the complete opposite of what he sells. But consider this. He has been married three times, has no kids and went on a vacation with a bunch of dudes and packed a supply of Viagra. Plus he likes to suck on phallic objects.

Do the math people.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:57 PM on 07/02/2008

I agree with you on Limbaugh 100%...but please tell me where Stern peddles hatred...if you actually ever listened to Stern you would know that he doesn't.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:05 PM on 07/02/2008

Was not it Mencken (a famous conservative and racist, but I repeat myself) who wrote that no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people? Didn't P.T. Barnum supposedly say "There's one (sucker) born every minute." And Lincoln who it is said, said you can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time. (actually, it's in the Bible [in Hebrew, and Lincoln didn't speak Hebrew].) Hermann Goering (not J.E. Hoover) said, "Shoot first and ask questions later (and I will protect you)" [but he said it in German]. He also said "When I hear the word "culture" I switch off the safety on my Browning." (much funnier in German,)

Rush has more talent and ability in one finger than the entire "HairbrainAmerica" Radio staff combined.

Yah, he is full of himself but the numbers don't lie. He earns more $$ in 5 minutes than "HairbrainAmerica" Radio has earned during it's entire life time.

You can't argue with success. Is it any wonder that liberals and leftist democrats are foaming at the mouth for the fairness doctrine to shut him down? That's the only way they will be able to do it. And if liberals and leftist democrats want to pi$$ of 20 million Rush fans, I say go for it.

They only scream for fair play when it's their backs against the wall. Fair and Balanced? More rightard lies as they can't even pretend to be fair or balanced.

The Fairness Doctrine wouldn't shut him down.

that is not its purpose and that is not what it would do.

All the Fairness Doctrine requires is that stations which broadcast on the PUBLIC airwaves present more than one side of an issue.

Stations which carry his show would have to offer shows with opposing viewpoints---they would not have to stop broadcasting his show unless they refused to offer other viewpoints.

Since the broadcast spectrum belongs to all the people, it is only fitting that more than one opinion be offered.

If you can't see that, then you're not much of an American.

the only problem there is, when the stations air the "opposing view points" nobody will be listening. therefore the stations lose money. they're not in the broadcast business to air something that doesn't make any money.

don't believe me? just look at what a booming success air america has been. wow!!! the fact of the matter is, most democrat voters get their hard hitting poliitcal news from MTV and wouldn't know what to do with a radio dial if it bit them in the ass.

Um, Randi Rhodes regularly beat him in the same radio markets in Florida, but Clear Channel has already told her that Rush is their cash cow and won't let her go head-to-head in other markets. So while you can't argue with "success," you can argue about what defines success.

Basically, the obliteration of the fairness doctrine along with the Telecom Act of 1996 (signed by Bill Clinton) means that people like Rush and Clear Channel really don't have to compete against anyone and they are not held to any standards for the public good even though they are using public -- that is, OUR -- airwaves. They just bought up everything -- and we let them do it.

When you understand how this all works, make sure to come back now, ya hear?

I've listened to Rush, by choice or otherwise, a few times.

He's great at pointing out problems. As far as offering workable solutions, not so much.

He stretches the truth, and allow his callers-in to stretch it even further.

He preys on the ignorant and uninformed in this country. He's a master at it.

It makes me sad that so many Americans think he speaks the gospel.

First I have nothing but admiration for Limbaugh. He is the very epitome of laughing all the way to the bank. Second, that he gets such a big audience is truly depressing. I mean, listen to his program. The constant repetition and overkill on the same topics over and over, ad nauseum. What kind of listerner requires this sort of heavy handed, non-stop reinforcement of what are really cariactures of ideas? Right--they don't call them dittoheads for nothing.

Imagine the mindset of (happily) referring to yourself as a "dittohead". Ah yes, the rugged individualism of the conservative American. Honestly.
