New York Times:

Russia's new president, Dmitri A. Medvedev, less swaggering than his predecessor but as touchy about criticism from abroad, said in an interview that an America in "essentially a depression" was in no position to lecture other countries on how to conduct their affairs.

With soaring oil revenues bolstering the Russian economy and Kremlin confidence, Mr. Medvedev brushed aside American criticism of his country's record on democracy and human rights. He also said that a revived Russia had a right to assume a larger role in a world economic system that he suggested should no longer be dominated by the United States.

Mr. Medvedev made his comments on Tuesday in a meeting with a small group of foreign journalists a day after the American treasury secretary, Henry M. Paulson Jr., appealed in Moscow for Russian investment in the United States. The symbolism of the visit resonated here, in that only a decade had passed since the Russian economy was in shambles and the country was desperate for Western aid.

Mr. Medvedev seemed to be seeking in the interview to raise his profile before attending the Group of 8 meeting of industrialized nations next week in Japan. Mr. Medvedev leads Russia in tandem with his predecessor and mentor, Vladimir V. Putin, who is now prime minister and is still widely considered Russia's pre-eminent leader.

In the interview, Mr. Medvedev was asked about a call by Senator John McCain of Arizona, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, to bar Russia from the Group of 8 because of its record on democracy. Mr. Medvedev, who easily won Russia's presidential election in March after the Kremlin hobbled the opposition, responded that the question of democracy was irrelevant to the Group of 8 and, besides, the United States had more pressing matters to attend to.

"Mr. Medvedev provided no glimpses of disagreements with Mr. Putin on policies or strategy, though their stylistic differences were readily apparent. Whereas Mr. Putin occasionally responds to questions with blunt retorts or salty language, Mr. Medvedev tends to offer demurrals and then to engage in a kind of academic discussion of issues"

This new president is 42 and I love the academic discussion of issues part... he and Obama should get along great!!! Time to bring our status back in the world...

Obama 08!!

"Should"? That was generous of him - I would have said "could".

A. He's right.

B. This is a predictable consequence of the immersion of our nation's government in depravity and moral degradation by Bushco and Cheneyinc; that a second rate puppet and thug could credibly claim the high ground when discussing America and its leadership.

Do they assassinate and murder? We do too. Do they torture? We do too. Is their economic and political elite a vast network of corrupt and incompetent in-crowd cronies? Ours is too. Do they paper over the deficiencies of their civil society with counter-productive militarism and hollow nationalism? Bingo.

But hey, we're number one! Just raise that foam finger higher and everything'll be OK, right?

Everyone who pulled the lever for W - you must be so proud...

Someone will set this guy up with a lady of the night, take pictures and he will be weakened for the rest of his presidency. He looks like a sucker for big boobies

A) Have you ever seen Svetlana Medvedeva? The guy is already set on that front.

B) I don't think that would necessarily earn him the scorn of the Russian public like it would hear in the United States.

Bush has "led" the way, but Democrats in Congress have done NOTHING to "check and balance" him. They share blame.

So do a lot of the American Voting Public share the blame. Remember, they RE-ELECTED him.

Thank you Bush. Has anyone realized that all of these recent world political events play exactly into how Obama's been saying that they were going to happen? I mean, I remember him saying that as of right now we are in 0 position to question Russia or China.

One thing, if it wasn't to an intellectually unchallenging mass natural resource exploitation (mainly of gas and oil) the Russian economy today would be probably worse off than even in the ol' days of Soviet Union. They can't even keep their inflation on the level below that of Nigeria, the population is dying out consistently for the past 15 years, and that endemic corruption.... you know, the one he was nominally placed in charge of protecting (Gasprom, Rosneft etc.) , it's just ludicrous.

So despite him being more or less factually right with regards to US' current position in the world, there is absolutely nothing, and i repeat it - Nothing that his current oligarchic Russian government can prescribe to any country out there that would actually improve the matters of economy.

So let's just leave it at that, and of course let's not forget to kick the republican arse out of the white house this fall, after all our collective misery is precisely their major achievement.

Superiority complex and arrogance has always been America's problem. It is blinding.

Truth to be told, the Russian government is not to be looked up to when it comes to the matters of economy. There is nothing wrong about saying what is factually correct, the inflation in Nigeria is lower than it is in Russia, which is almost a paradox given the vast scientific and industrial capacity that Russia has at it's disposal. There have been quite a few articles on this phenomena in the Russian press recently, so consider this to be an opinion of the Russians themselves. Regards.

This is important for Americans to understand, our countries economy is in trouble and things need to change. We can't have four more years of Republican rule and corruption. These people are all getting rich now and don't care what happens later. You can see from this article Russia's leader is clearly on a level far beyond Bush "not as if thats saying much" but he would be even more ahead of the puppet of the republican party Mccain.

There is a corporate serving poltical establishment that controls both the Democratic and Republican parties. The rhetoric is differs, but the actions and results are the same. Lots of blame for Bush, but much of what we see playing out economically is the result of policies put in place in the Clinton years behind the scenes of the illusionary and now gone technology bubble and real estate bubble.

It appears to me that under Bush we have become a beggar nation: How humiliating of us to beg Saudia Arabia for more gas and beg Russia for them to invest in our country. Thank you Bush and Dick. MIchelle Obama's pride in America may be misplaced.

Well, OK. He may be entitled to criticize us, but the fact is that a lot of the people who have spoken out against the corruption of the Russian government, including journalists, haven't always lived to see another day. And nobody seems able to find out who killed them.

Folks, I have been posting the same message on Huf-fy since its beginning three years ago: the American Dream is over. In the twenty-first century, the monsters of Energy Scarcity and Climate Change will destroy all our silly old dreams.

Time for new dreams.

Conservation, Recycling and New Energy is the new paradigm. The sooner we get on board, the better. And forget about this silly dream of Excessive Consumption that propelled our economy in the last century; it is d-ead.

Junk stores like Walmart and Home Depot that specialize in low quality Chinese junk are obsolete. Three cars in every driveway is foolishness. Throw-away cheap consumer goods is yesterday. Consumption as a model for economic growth no longer works in the face of these approaching Wendigos of ENERGY SCARCITY and CLIMATE CHANGE.
