In this April 24, 2008 file photo Cindy McCain introduces her husband, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., at a town hall meeting at Xavier University in New Orleans. WASHINGTON — The public hasn't taken to Michelle Obama yet, especially whites. And it's got a question about Cindy McCain: Who is she?

People are divided over whether they like the wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, with 30 percent seeing her favorably and 35 percent unfavorably, according to an Associated Press-Yahoo News poll released Wednesday.

They tilt positively toward the spouse of Republican hopeful John McCain, by 27 percent to 17 percent.

In other words: While the two women are about equally liked, Michelle Obama is twice as disliked as Cindy McCain.

"Cindy seems like she's laid back and not trying to run her husband," said Linda Kaiser, 60, a Republican and church secretary from Clairton, Pa. "It's nice to have a brain, but they should let their husband be president."

Whites have an unfavorable view of Michelle Obama by 18 percentage points, while eight in 10 blacks like her. That is reminiscent of how Barack Obama fared in the Democratic primaries against Hillary Rodham Clinton.

In the AP-Yahoo News poll, whites saw Cindy McCain positively by 17 points, while one in eight blacks like her.

Michelle Obama does better with unmarried people and college graduates but is viewed poorly by people age 65 and up. Cindy McCain is seen more favorably by older people, those who are married and the more affluent, but she is less well-received by singles.

Cindy McCain is also more of a mystery. Nearly six in 10, or 56 percent, said they know too little to say much about her _ exceeding the 34 percent clueless about Michelle Obama. Half of Republicans say they don't know Cindy McCain, while three in 10 Democrats say that about Michelle Obama.

Barack Obama's wife seems to incite stronger feelings. One in five had very negative views of her, triple the number who said so about John McCain's wife. One in 10 had very favorable views of Michelle Obama, double Cindy McCain's number.

"She's African-American, she's highly articulate, she's young and she seems highly devoted to her husband and her family," said Edythe Friley, 61, a retired teacher from Detroit. "She serves as a role model. There's not a parent on planet Earth who wouldn't want a daughter like this."

Michelle Obama has been in the spotlight more than Cindy McCain, including stories on whether she was trying to reshape her image.

Michelle Obama, 44, a lawyer and hospital administrator, took flak in February when she said she was proud of her country "for the first time in my adult life." Cindy McCain, 54, heiress to an Arizona beer distributorship, revealed in May that she earned more than $6 million in 2006 after saying she would never release her income tax returns.

The AP-Yahoo News survey of 1,759 adults was conducted from June 13-23 and had an overall margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points. Included were interviews with 844 Democrats and 637 Republicans, for whom the margins of sampling error were plus or minus 3.4 points and 3.9 points, respectively.

The poll was conducted over the Internet by Knowledge Networks, which initially contacted people using traditional telephone polling methods and followed with online interviews. People chosen for the study who had no Internet access were given it for free.

And this is the problem with thhis country. People are so Goddamn stupid because they're so Goddamn LAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Does somebody have to come to their front door and read it to them like a bedtime story????????????

All they have to do is Google "Michelle Obama" and "Cindy McCain" it's real easy. Takes about 1 minute. Wikipedia alone has a wealth of information about both women.

Maybe if they put it on a commercial during American Idol, the American people would get off their fat lazy asses and find out what they need to know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate to break it to you, but most old fogies (including many of my relatives) don't "Google" anything! And some not-so-old people don't even know how to turn a computer on.

They just want news spoon-fed to them by the MSM. And they would never lie to them. Uh huh!

The double standard continues to rear its ugly head. No need to repeat many of the arguments, the bottom line is that Michelle Obama will need to be twice as pretty, twice as nice and three times the woman Cindy McCain is just to have a fighting chance! Luckily Michelle is up to the challenge!

not to mention the fact that if Michelle had engaged in the same drug-thieving stunts as Cindy, we would be busy right now trying to get excited about Hillary...

But America disagrees! Hardly a resounding note of confidence in Michelle being able to even be in the challenge.

I don't get the fascination, or media time, spent on either one of these spouses. It's a waste of time and a DISTRACTION from the real issues we should be focusing on. That being said, here are my opinions:

Michelle Obama is a mother with her first commitment to raising her young daughters, as she repeatedly says any time she talks or is asked questions. She is a strong woman, speaks plainly and clearly, and is a great role model for all women.

Eventhough I am a 61 year old Caucasian woman, I can't relate to Cindy McCain. While I support any woman in her choice of physical appearance, I don't relate to the bleached hair and the makeup, nor the passive way she stands beside her husband when he speaks. More importantly, I don't understand why she refuses to release her tax returns. We all know she is incredibly wealthy, so why the refusal? I don't think people with that kind of wealth can really get behind the average American or support policies that would help us.

We saw what happened to Teresa Heinz in 2004...personally, I thought she was fabulous, far better than her walking zombie of a husband. Unfortunately, neither one of the Obamas have charmed me like so many have been.

Did you see Cindy's new recipe on how to whip up a batch of Percocet Brownies--hmm they are so tasty!!!!!!! They make the worries about overdue tax bills just melt away!!!!!

I (as a black man) are starting to get the feeling of racism from the "Hmm--I don't know Obama too well but my neighbor says he is a racist Muslim" as I am not voting for Obama but I don't want to admit that I am racist--am I alone here.
Listen if you freely admit that you do not know enough about a candidate--fine but either A. Take the time to find out about BOTH candidates or B. Don't vote.
I am getting this weird feeling that all these people that keep saying this are kinda code for I am not voting for Obama period (and I just admitted that it isn't for his stances b/c I don't know them).
Why isn't anybody smoking this out??? If you are a party line voter---fine (democratic or republican) but don't call yourself an independent and not do independent research!!! You are just and idiot

Please let me introduce you to Cindy Mccain. She does a lot of charity work because she doesn't really work at any thing. A few years back she was a drug addict who stole drugs from her medical charity group she sponsored. But you won't hear cnn, fox, msm cover this REAL NEWS INFORMATION because it is cindy mccain an not michelle Obama and her little proud sentence stlip up was more imprtant than cindy mccains drug addiction, and stealing drugs from her charity. Now just how mixed up is that? We know she's a lot younger than mr. Mccain! We know she owns 10 homes, and has defaulted on tax's on one of those homes for four years now, and not like normal people, she didn't even have to pay a penalty! We know she was born with a silver spoon in mouth, and probaly never pumped her own gas! Doubt if she has any thing in common with people who can't pay a gas bill, or have a hard timle buying grocerys! She's a rich girl who wouldn't be found dead in a soup kitchen or helping the unfortunate over on the east side of chicago! Let's just say she ain't like the normal joe, or like you or I , the normal person onthe streets.

I think she may do charity work because it is important to her.

You forgot to mention that she had been a special education teacher at a high school in Arizona. You didn't mention that she'd had 2 back surgeries and became dependent on painkillers. You also forgot to mentiont hat she had a stroke which may account for some of her lack of facial expression. I'm not sure why her age or her wealth is her fault or a problem. I won't even go into the tax situation because either you are unable to understand how the system works or you just want to say something negative even if it's not true. Actually, she HAS worked in a soup kitchen just as she is active in Halo Trust travelling the world on their behalf just as she does for Operation Smile. She can't be everywhere doing everything so I don't know why it matters where she does her charity work. The east side of Chicago is not the only place in the world with problems.

Is she just like me or you? No. You're right that she doesn't have a hard time buying groceries. Neither do the Obamas. So what? When was the last time that a "normal joe" ran for president or was married to someone who was running for president.

I have no problem with people not liking Cindy McCain. I'm fairly indifferent to her. But at least have some good reasons for it.

The public doesn't know Cindy because the McCain campaign wants it that way. Understandably so. All you're going to find is a pharmaceutical vapor awash in funneled money and sordid baggage. Oh, and she plagiarizes recipes.

I really don't care about the recipe brouhaha or that she popped pills. Betty Ford ended up creating a clinic because of her addictions. WHATEVER!

But what I do care about is that the lives of spouses are remotely important in this campaign...we heard all the crap about the Clintons being a two for one deal...bogus bull...so let's not engage in this society page trivia about first ladies and worry about what McCain and Obama will do for the country...fine if their wives which to speak out on issues or remain behind the scenes.

Hey snot, Michelle runs circles aroung Ms Mc ... and you know it!! Ms Mc needs to tell us why she has no documented criminal record for unlawfully lifting drugs from that facility whose administration "trusted" her ... to no avail!!

Cindy has be in the public spot light for as long as John McCain has been in the senate (30+ years), and a presidential campaign in 2000, yet the public doesn't know her? or is it that they are always willing to give her the benefit of doubt? Yet they have enough information on Michelle in Baracks few years in public service to have "mixed feelings" about her?

Stevie Wonder could see the hypocrisy in this poll.....

I've noticed that too, gditty - 34% of the people were "clueless" about M. Obama, yet many more didn't think highly of her - ?? Why?? Is it just because she is a black woman, or b/c she speaks openly sometimes.
I don't know anything about Cindy M. - and she hasn't been married to John for 30 years. He had a previous wife, remember? I don't have a good impression of her because she seems like a phony. Everything else is a rumor to me.........
