A Georgia 16-year old, the star of a hard-to-watch YouTube video in which he catapults an 8-month-old baby off of a pillow, has been arrested for cruelty to children. The boy was apprehended after one of his school teachers saw the video and informed police. The child, who was in the care of the boy's family at the time, was taken to the doctor by its parents and there is no word yet if there were serious injuries.

I just don't get it, I have no more sympathy for the victim in this case than any other victim. If the baby isn't hurt the kid should get some community service and a restraining order, don't let your emotions for children cloud your judgement, thats the way republicans think and you should all know better. Think fair and rationally not emotionally, don't get up in arms every time a baby is treated abnormally but then post emotionally empty posts about men being tortured at Gitmo, it makes you look disconnected and hysterical.

It is abundantly clear that you "don't get it."

that's way too rational, a more emotional response would be natural. Its just a baby.

I don't get all squishy about babies either. That being said, whether it's an infant or an animal, this kind of abuse of a vulnerable, dependent creature that looks to human beings for care and protection is more than thoughtlessness - it's the act of a thug and a sadist, and very likely to escalate if unchecked. For someone to hear that child's terrified screams and think they're amusing is simply sick.

Whatever punishment that young male receives - and it should be serious, though hardly life imprisonment - he is damned lucky he's not facing homicide charges; the baby landed just inches away from what appears to be a marble-faced fireplace, and landed on his stomach, rather than his head.

Look, I understand your intellectual argument here, but you're missing one point. A baby is the most vulnerable of all human beings. Babies can't talk, they can't run away, they can't say no, they can't fight back. They can't make the choice to fight back and risk death or injury when trying. They are completely helpless. The higher state of emotion and anger is reasonable not irrational in this case. It's really that simple.

It seems like an unrealistic distinction to me. Does a prisoner being tortured really have the ability to defend themselves or a woman being raped? I just think this whole all children are the baby jesus reincarnated attitude doesn't help our legal system or our rationale, if this kid should go to prison then so should many many other people in our country for being cruel to other individuals in similar ways.

Well said, ricitizen.

Amazing and sad that this simple truth has to be pointed out to another person, but maybe it might just make this person think a bit more logically.

I think you are letting your political ideology get ahead of your common sense. Anyone who values human life would find intentionally harming a defenseless individual, whether a baby or an adult, cruel and revolting. This case is especially egregious behavior because the violence was simply engaged in for "fun."

Also, while there are some extremists who misguidely support torturing terrorist suspects, most Americans, regardless of where they stand on the political spectrum, oppose torturing prisoners. And certainly, I think few people on the Huffington Post are posting "emotionally empty posts about men being tortured."

Your post is what I find to be "disconnected." By your logic, since nearly all individuals at Gitmo seem to be still alive and breathing, then we should just give their torturers "community service."

No, in this case the teenager who is quite old enough to know better should be sent to Juvenile detention for a few months, required to attend pyschiatric counseling, and placed on probation for at least a year. And, it goes without saying, that he should also be required to pay any necessary restitution to the victims family.

Question:

What is the difference of having consternation for the "adult" who is potentially harming this baby and someone who would abort a baby?

Answer: Only a few months. This baby is very young.....but you same people would fight for this baby to be killed (along with Barry Obama) only a couple months earlier!

If this doesn't force you to reevaluate your beliefs on abortion, I don't know what will.
You're lying to yourselves that you don't feel it is morally wrong!

Sad, isn't it? You rail against the people who could potentially harm this poor defenseless baby, but yet fight for the right for an adult to abort a baby up to 20 weeks or more in a pregnancy.

Folks.....hypocrisy!

I think your posing as a Democrat and are really a Republican. I hope the teenager in the video and his friend who allowed it to happen end up in the hospital.

I'm the one who's posing to be a deomcrat while you simultaneously call for violence on others, you should think about what I said and say something legitimate instead of these emotional automatic posts.

no it doesn't! it suggests that young people are systematically desensitized to viloence via video games and MTV and R-rated movies and domestic violence ...

of course there has always been violence
yes, there have always been some young violent offenders
(most of which were desensitized by their own personal experiences)

now, we have LOTS of teens who are desensitized -- not just the ones who suffered some freakish personal rare violent experience --

so it goes from being the rare bird
to the norm

see the dif?

Someone, I take it, didn't care for my bit of channeling the spirit of the late George Carlin, less the "dirty" words. Best to lighten up, people. If you don't laugh at this sort of sickness, you'll go crazy.

Thank you ever so much for making the video available for me to watch!! Why, without seeing it for myself, I would never have thought that bouncing an infant off a pillow onto a the floor would be harmful!

The media does the nation a great service by showing us just how stupid some individuals can be. It's almost as important as showing us the details of celebrities' sex lives.

(P.S. No, I didn't really watch the video)

They are so horrified they showed it two-and-a-half times, once in slow motion. Are you kidding me? This sick media of ours was slavering like hell hounds when they found this! They'd like to sign that kid up to a weekly show, “Baby Go BOOM”, if they could. In this perverse culture of torture shows, where people eat bugs and stick their heads in maggoty trash for money, the public gobbles this pap up like, well, bugs and maggoty trash. Who among the ADD-riddled youth of our fading republic wouldn’t be glued to the boob tube every night to see how Timmy plans to deploy a baby violently in the air. Will he use a catapult or a sling? And here's an angle to increase public involvement: let the semi-retarded audience choose which baby to shoot into space. Give 'em a nice selection to choose from, a nice ethnic brood. Any bets that this racist country leans heavily in favor of launching black and yellow and brown babies? Sure money the only white babies we'll see hurled at a distance are those who give the screen the finger.
