One of the great fears of the McCain campaign (and, conversely, a tightly held hope of Barack Obama) is that libertarian Bob Barr could somehow turn his campaign into a vote-siphoning, moderately influential electoral force.

Those fears rest, in large part, on Barr tapping into the grassroots efforts and fundraising apparatus of the libertarian community's true love: Ron Paul, the Texas Republican who raised copious amounts of campaign cash during the Republican primary and, in some states, earned a sizable chunk of the vote.

On Tuesday, a step was made down that road. Tucked into the Associated Press daily calendar of events was this little nugget:

Ron Paul supporters attempt Bob Barr money bomb. Money Bomb for Libertarian Presidential nominee Bob Barr, organized by supporters of former Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul. Similar efforts for the Republican Congressman saw him break single day fundraising records during his Presidential bid.

Could this be the first major step in a political collaboration? Alas, the official answer seems to be no (though with a tinge of hope).

"This is something that [Paul's] are doing independently of the campaign," said Audrey Mullen, a spokeswoman for Barr. "We are not involved we are not coordinating, but certainly we are delighted that they are doing it... We don't know these people who are doing this money bomb thing and we didn't ask them to."

Still, events likes these may be worth keeping note of. For starters, if Barr is able to tap into Paul's money-raising connections, he could go a long way towards making a dent in McCain's vote totals. And the Obama campaign, in a memo sent to reporters, is clearly counting on Barr contributing to Democratic victories in several states.

Already Paul and Barr seem to be edging towards a pseudo-alliance. According to Mullen, the two have spoke to each other recently. Paul, moreover, has praised Barr in public; and the Georgia congressman has returned the platitudes:

"Congressman Ron Paul has fought tirelessly in both the Libertarian Party and the Republican Party to minimize government power and maximize individual liberty," said Barr, in mid-June. "I want to thank him for all that he has done for liberty in this nation, and encourage him to continue his fight through whatever avenues he sees fit."

Dr. Paul hasn't formally endorsed anybody for this election. We all know Obama or McCain (is there a difference?) will be elected in November and we'll get 4 years of the same. This is a given.

Instead, Paul and his supporters are focused on weeding out the neocons from the Republican party, one at a time, at all levels of government.

If you are against the neocon agenda - wars for oil, globalism, fascism, etc. then you have no better friend.

What is with these magical boards? Comments disappear and reappear for no apparent reason. Pending comments don't seem to reflect the reality. Comments with no hostility, no links, no bad words, names spread out with spaces in between the letters to get past the filter, get zapped - Why?

And how is it that some people manage to get a link in to a b l o g s i t e, but others (to b l o g s p o t) trip up the "bad word"-filter?

The minders are starting early today. What about my saying that BO started in the center and is pandering to the right is worthy of censoring?

What has given people the idea that he is pandering now anymore than when he first started his campaign?

During the weeks of H i l l a r y's kitchen sink strategy, particularly during the PA primary when she was moving to the left and promising gas tax holidays. You knew it was a ploy to get the votes of those "hard working white people", and if she got the nomination she wouldn't bother to look back as she made her way to the right-of-center (she was always to the right of B i l l, who wasn't much of a liberal himself).

O b a m a remained steadfast, didn't make promises. That was his only attraction for this liberal. He seemed to be someone whose word you could take to the bank, which, even if you didn't like what he said, you knew what to expect and plan accordingly. He seemed reasonable, that if you could make a good case for your position, he could be won over. That I can work with.

I am for getting rid of all party politics!!!! Our representatives should be elected form a public fund and it she strictly based on their individual platform and qualifications... nothing to do with party affiliations or left - right labels!!!!

I wouldn't be so excited about this if I were O b a m a. His flip-flops these last couple of weeks has been a real betrayal of those who got him this far; N a d e r, R o n P a u l, B o b B a r r are tempting alternatives for those who don't see the surge as a "success", think the FISA court is unconstitutional enough without rewarding the telecoms that cooperated with the most criminal administration in history retroactive immunity, and believe that the US was created for the life, liberty and pursuit of happiness of people and not corporations.

To be honest, Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich and Barack Obama stood out from the rest as genuine and brave. They all think that the war was a big mistake. They didn't mince words or pander. They have been an inspiration to all that really want change in this country. Ron and Dennis are still heroes of mine.

Dennis was my guy, too. O b a m a was the compromise for me, for the reasons I already stated: As an intelligent, honest man who we on the left might be able to work with by convincing of our better way through reason.

These last weeks, he's reminding me of B u s h, who uses weasel words strung together in such a way that their meaning on the surface, and in the context of the rest of the conversation and events going on, is obvious. But later, you learn he meant their more obscure alternative definition. So his surrogates can challenge growing dissatisfaction with the candidate by saying, "He didn't lie, you misunderstood!"

It's like O b a m a has hired Frank Luntz.

But Barack has slipped. I thought he would repair the damage GW Bush did by ignoring our Constitution, but now, with his faith initiative, just like GW Bush, Obama says we NEED to ignore the Constitution because government alone can't handle social programs for the poor.

Dear Barack, improve the schools. Make schools the center of services for the poor, not churches.

www.opensecrets.org see where the money flows and from whom.

RP/DK now, that's a ticket with integrity. no hype, no flowery speaches, no contradictory votes, no shady real estate deals.

This is excellent news for the beleaguered citizens of this once great country. We may be going downhill, but at least Obama will try to stem that tide. (How's that for metaphor mixing?)

I am an O'Bama supporter (and a life long dem) who loves Ron Paul's platform and while Bob Barr has some good thoughts - He is no Ron Paul. And honorable mention Grabel had great ideas too.

I hate centerist, the reason I did not choose Hillary.

This would be good news for everyone. Obama sweeps and the Right gets an enema. Meanwhile 3rd party options grow and maybe some common sense issues get discussed on the Left.

A four to eight year hiatus for the GOP would be a good thing. It would let them purge the neocons out of the party, restore some respect for the Constitution and curb the religous right. A couple of well-run Congressional hearings about the rape of the Constitution in the Bush Department of Justice, perhaps. Shame and a chance at redemption. Then the GOP would be again ready to respresent the forces of real Conservatism in the dialogue with the American people and be helathy rather than the cancer-ridden cripple we now see.
