Giuliani Repeats Debunked GOP China Drilling Talking Point

On Glenn Beck's show last night, Rudy Giuliani repeated a popular GOP talking point about off-shore drilling, as Think Progress reports:

Last night on his CNN show, Glenn Beck hosted failed GOP presidential contender -- and ardent supporter of Sen. John McCain's (R-AZ) presidential campaign -- Rudy Giuliani. During the segment, Giuliani recycled the old thoroughly debunked GOP talking point that the U.S. needs to start drilling for off-shore oil because China is doing it off the coast of Cuba. But this time, Guiliani included a special twist in his argument -- that China is taking "American oil":

GIULIANI: And you look at -- you look at Cuba ... Cuba is going to allow China to drill for oil within 80 miles of Florida. And Florida had a 300-mile limit. So in essence, we have China drilling for American oil. [...] An American company would do it much more carefully. It would be regulated better. We`ve got to open up all these other things.

In fact, the myth is so thoroughly debunked that even Dick Cheney admitted he made a mistake when he spread it. That was three weeks ago -- apparently word hasn't gotten to Giuliani yet.

I guess this bonehead failed to realize that Cuba is a scant 90 south of Key West. So we could do the math and that means even if the Cubans were doing this it would be just 10 miles off their shores. But instead let''s take this a step further. Based on what Rudy is saying...Florida OWNS Cuba. I mean if we have a 300 mile territorial boundry the whole island of Cuba is in our realm of possession.

Now this presents a very interesting situation. I mean if this is the case, I need to write my Representative in Tallahassee and my State Senator and demand that they allow me access to Cuban Cigars and Rum! Also, since Cuba is now part of Florida, Miami can go back to the Island that they long for.

Oh let's face it, the GOP has as much brains as could fit in a thimble and Rudy has the least of 'em all.

You know, for all the Republican fear mongering on this issue, I havn't seen one of them (no Democrats either) point out that the simplest solution to the heathen Chinee drilling for Cuban oil is lift that stupid, ineffective, and anachronistic embargo that we've had on Cuba since the '50's. Note to Republicans: Fidel Castro gives a little chuckle every morning and realizes that he's outlived all of the cold warriors that put that embargo in place in the first place by another day.
