WASHINGTON — The Pentagon has extended the tour of 2,200 Marines in Afghanistan, after insisting for months the unit would come home on time. The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is doing combat operations in the volatile south, will stay an extra 30 days and come home in early November rather than October, Marine Col. David Lapan confirmed Thursday.

Military leaders as recently as Wednesday stressed the need for additional troops in Afghanistan. Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has often praised the work of the 24th MEU in fighting Taliban militants in Helmand Province.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates, however, has repeatedly said he did not intend to extend or replace the U.S. Marines in Afghanistan, calling their deployment there an extraordinary, one-time effort to help tamp down the increasing violence in the south.

Asked about the possibility of an extension in early May, Gates said he would "be loathe to do that." He added that "no one has suggested even the possibility of extending that rotation."

Lapan said Thursday that commanders in Afghanistan asked that the Marines stay longer.

Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said the longer tour does not open the door to an extension beyond the 30 days, nor to the possibility of replacing them with other U.S. troops when they come out in November. "This is a slight addition to this tour and nothing more," he said.

He added that commanders in Afghanistan "asked for 30 more days to milk the fighting season to the bitter end and cement the gains they have made in the south."

The Pentagon announced in January that the Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is based at Camp Lejeune, N.C., was being ordered to Afghanistan, largely because efforts to press other NATO nations to increase their troop levels at the time had failed.

At the same time, about 1,000 members of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, which is based at Twentynine Palms, Calif., was ordered to deploy also. That unit has been used to train Afghan security forces. As a result of the MEU's extended deployment, Marines from both units are now expected to return home at about the same time.

Commanders faced with increasing violence have said they need at least 7,500 more troops in Afghanistan. And President Bush and defense officials have said they hope to identify additional units by the end of the year that could go to Afghanistan early next year.

The Pentagon has said that more U.S. forces cannot be sent to the Afghan fight until decisions are made to further reduce troop levels in Iraq. In the last two months, violence in Afghanistan has led to more U.S. and coalition casualties there than in Iraq, and June was the deadliest month for U.S. troops in Afghanistan since the war began.

"The Taliban and their supporters have, without question, grown more effective and more aggressive in recent weeks ... as the casualty figures clearly demonstrate," Mullen told a Pentagon press conference Wednesday.

The heavy fighting has claimed the lives of a dozen members of the MEU. One other Marine's death was not related to combat.

"It's a very complex problem, and it's tied to the drug trade, a faltering economy and, as I've said many times, the porous border region with Pakistan," said Mullen. "There's no easy solution, and there will be no quick fix."

There are 32,000 U.S. forces in Afghanistan, including 14,000 serving with the NATO-led coalition and another 18,000 conducting training and counterinsurgency.

The NATO force includes more than 52,000 troops from as many as 40 countries.

Troop deployment extensions and stop loss orders are the way our Executive Branch is having a draft without people getting pissed when their child is forced into the Nation Building and occupation dreams.
Just like we said in the baby boomer days.
"Be the first one on your block to have your son come home in a box". Or daughter these days.
The neo-cons are trying to pass down Iraq, Iran, and a forced draft to protect our country after their disasterous policies of neglect for our troops. Now we cannot give our patriots a college education because they will not sign back up if we offer something else other than death for benefits.
How can these supposed leaders keep up the facade of haveing these kids enlist for a tour of duty and then stop loss them and keep extending their tour because the Republicans know they are all done in our government if they call for a draft even though we need it so badly.

Like these holes didn't know this when they said they wouldn't do it. Another lie from Bushco and (oh by the way) McDoink and the pentagon have no intention of reinstating the draft either.

Oooppsss.... the Pentagon FAILS again. But what do they care as long as they have young men and women they can put in harm's way. Meanwhile, all the generals are polishing their medals and getting drunk at B-B-Qs. Just like Booosh...well, except he never earned a medal, having run away from his Nat. Guard service like the coward he is.

How many of our brave soldiers must fall before the American people discover the truth
about the fat cats in The Carlyle Group, Blackwater, Dyncorp, Halliburton/KBR, Bechtel, BDM, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed and everyone else profiteering from this perpetual war?

How much of that $850 BILLION has actually gone to " OUR TROOPS"?

I would love to see that pie chart.

It is the Initiative which was squandered in favor of 'corporatizing' and branding this conflict.

Bush totally dropped the ball at Tora Bora let them get away and made the War on Terror a fraud..it was cowardice by the Commander in chief in the face of the enemy he refused to send only 6-800 Troops to cut off their escape and even gave al-Qaeda a truce to help them escape...

If you could do math, you would realize that 1200 is less than one percent of those serving there now, and 1,000 fewer than the Pentagon is extending stays for in Afghanistan. Of course, if you could do math, or spell, for that matter, you could probably raise your level of knowledge about this issue to a point where you could add something of substance. It's never too late to start.

How sad - another rethuglican a[poligist tries to say the surge is working but can't quite figure out why if that is true the Maroines are being kept there to die.

btw - they re-enlisted because Mc Bu$h doesn't want them to have any benefits. And there are no jobs available under the FAILED economic policies of the FAILED Bu$hCo Crime Family.

When Mullen announced the military doesn't have enough soldiers in afghanistan nor did it have more to send there it should have been written in large letters on the wall behind him that the extentsion were coming. Iraq isn't going to let it's army be trained by us and the way they have taken so long to get "trained" shows it so why are we still in Iraq training these guys? We need to bring the taliban down to the level it was and Al Queda is stronger than on 9/11 so we have to do something but what? Without other countries being more involved we are not going to get much further than we have now and more soldiers will die. We have not been told the truth about the countries and the middles east and so what we are doing there has t come out so the country can either stand behind or pull out the troops.
