WASHINGTON — The Pentagon has extended the tour of 2,200 Marines in Afghanistan, after insisting for months the unit would come home on time. The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is doing combat operations in the volatile south, will stay an extra 30 days and come home in early November rather than October, Marine Col. David Lapan confirmed Thursday.

Military leaders as recently as Wednesday stressed the need for additional troops in Afghanistan. Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has often praised the work of the 24th MEU in fighting Taliban militants in Helmand Province.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates, however, has repeatedly said he did not intend to extend or replace the U.S. Marines in Afghanistan, calling their deployment there an extraordinary, one-time effort to help tamp down the increasing violence in the south.

Asked about the possibility of an extension in early May, Gates said he would "be loathe to do that." He added that "no one has suggested even the possibility of extending that rotation."

Lapan said Thursday that commanders in Afghanistan asked that the Marines stay longer.

Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said the longer tour does not open the door to an extension beyond the 30 days, nor to the possibility of replacing them with other U.S. troops when they come out in November. "This is a slight addition to this tour and nothing more," he said.

He added that commanders in Afghanistan "asked for 30 more days to milk the fighting season to the bitter end and cement the gains they have made in the south."

The Pentagon announced in January that the Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is based at Camp Lejeune, N.C., was being ordered to Afghanistan, largely because efforts to press other NATO nations to increase their troop levels at the time had failed.

At the same time, about 1,000 members of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, which is based at Twentynine Palms, Calif., was ordered to deploy also. That unit has been used to train Afghan security forces. As a result of the MEU's extended deployment, Marines from both units are now expected to return home at about the same time.

Commanders faced with increasing violence have said they need at least 7,500 more troops in Afghanistan. And President Bush and defense officials have said they hope to identify additional units by the end of the year that could go to Afghanistan early next year.

The Pentagon has said that more U.S. forces cannot be sent to the Afghan fight until decisions are made to further reduce troop levels in Iraq. In the last two months, violence in Afghanistan has led to more U.S. and coalition casualties there than in Iraq, and June was the deadliest month for U.S. troops in Afghanistan since the war began.

"The Taliban and their supporters have, without question, grown more effective and more aggressive in recent weeks ... as the casualty figures clearly demonstrate," Mullen told a Pentagon press conference Wednesday.

The heavy fighting has claimed the lives of a dozen members of the MEU. One other Marine's death was not related to combat.

"It's a very complex problem, and it's tied to the drug trade, a faltering economy and, as I've said many times, the porous border region with Pakistan," said Mullen. "There's no easy solution, and there will be no quick fix."

There are 32,000 U.S. forces in Afghanistan, including 14,000 serving with the NATO-led coalition and another 18,000 conducting training and counterinsurgency.

The NATO force includes more than 52,000 troops from as many as 40 countries.

This is like a really, really bad marriage. It's never going to end unless somebody ends it.

When my husband (Marine 2 Mar Div) left for Iraq in 2005 it was for 6-7 months, after he was there for about 2 months they changed it to a year deployment. Thirty days more is not as bad as it could be.

Some of them consider it patriotic. Others enjoy the combat pay - kinda like a gas tax holiday, only slightly more dangerous..

The vast majority of troops have given money to Obama and ron paul both who want to end the war in Iraq.If Obama picks a well respected military man as his V.P.we may see even more come our way.

Are you SURE it's only thirty days more? These extensions are announced so last-minute.
I hope you're right, and I hope that those who voted to continue with the Bush administration's policies step forward ASAP to give those who have served so long a rest.

Unless of course he is one of those who are killed or maimed that would not have been had they been allowed to leave when originally planned.

They sacrifce life and limb so that Bush, Cheney and the criminals they support can stuff their pockets with Oil and Arms profits. Disgraceful.

Obama has made his view of the war in Afghanistan clear. We are there to get bin Laden and the Taliban. Once that is accomplished the soldiers need to come home. As the Iraq war comes to an end that will become the focus. We the people need to understand the deployment of the 24th for an additional month is a result of the increase in violence there and the Marines of the 24th will do their duty as Marines always have. That good people must struggle and sacrifice is a core value of this great country, and on this Fourth of July all citizens, no matter where you are, should salute the Marines of the 24th. They understand why they are there, and what is at stake. Venal castigations of the leadership here is of no use and in my mind denigrates the goals we have had thrust upon us by the actions taken on 9/11. All good men and women hate war, but war is what we have had to deal with. I want these good Marines to come home as much as anyone, but the very nature of being a Marine is to serve, no matter what the sacrifice may be, that is why they are the best. Be very glad that we have the ability to produce such fine people and honor their history with reverence. Semper Fi.

Prime Minister Winston Churchill was a great leader during Britain's darkest hours. But he lost the general election post war. Why? Because he did not keep his promise to bring the troops home when he said he would. The British wanted the service men and women home. Simple as that. They voted against him in the millions. Also, as a conservative he represented a rigid class system and the British of all classes were ready for social programs to get rid of real poverty and inequity in the system, after everyone had pulled together to win the war.
Britain swung to Labor for several elections and the new Modern Britain was born.

If one of my children wanted to join the Marines, I would support them. There is danger to be sure, but the Marines produce people with discipline, character and a sense of service to the country.

It's the Bush White House, what do you expect. Than a self aggrandizing Bush, McCain, Graham and John Boehner will have the nerve to stand there and tell us the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan really believe in what they are doing and are willing to stay there until it's over. Than to cover the lie by immediately saying the troops are doing a great job, which they are, after Bush put them in harms way as McCain will continue. I have spoken to several Marines who have returned for R&R and alone - they want to stay home, let the people do with their country what they want.

So please tell me why the hell the MSM reports the race between BO and McSame so damn close? Are people simply idiots and too scared to vote their conscience or is the MSM stacking the deck early with fake "poll" results?

This just shows how important it is that we start pulling out troops from Iraq ASAP: Our military is overextended and has been for years. We need to pull troops out of Iraq (where neither the American nor Iraqi public wants them) down to a MUCH smaller level needed to support a much more limited (and realistic) mission so we can 1) keep our National Guard at home where they're suppose to be and most needed, 2) put the rest of our regular and reserve forces on the rotation schedule they're were suppose to be on (e.g. one year abroad and two years back in the case of the regulars) and 3) have more troops available for Afghanistan where the people who attacked us on 9/11 actually are. We should also be leaning much harder on our NATO allies to meet their treaty obligations. The people we are fighting in Afghanistan attacked us on 9/11 and intend on doing it again.
