Barack Obama got good reviews from some conservative commentators after his Tuesday speech outlining his plan for building upon the faith-based initiative established by President Bush.

But John McCain is getting better news from the right -- signs of a real push by conservative Christian leaders to coalesce on his behalf.

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain is beginning to pick up support that had been lacking from leaders of the religious right First, a taste of the reaction to the Obama speech in Ohio.

Well, of course. The "religious" right would rather have a deceitful, angry, insulting, pandering adulterer than a monogamous black/white (i.e. black) man. Sounds about right for them and the repugs.

The NeoCons are still using the old play book. Abortion, Faith Based BS, Gay Marriage etc.. They bypass, their own adultery, hate, tax avoidance, greed, and promote their self righteousness. If the economy was not in the toilet thanks to the current admin., or the war/attack of Iraq had some signs of hope, their sheep would be in pig heaven. Too bad all their hate and distractions from reality have not worked in their favor. Even the dummies that buy their morality are looking elsewhere when they can't feed their family or afford the fuel to commute for their work.

By the way, religious right people are not christians. They are a political group of people who's primary aim is to make people of faith vote for the republican party.

Please do not associate real christians with the religious right.

This is why I believe that O'bama needs to reach out to the christian community. Those that democrats believe in, are also the same beliefs and principles as most christians.

This is why its important for democrats to reach out to faith and to make an concerted effort to prove that democrats are also the party for christians.

If O'bama wins the majority of the christian votes in this country, he will be president.

In his first year in the U.S. House, McCain voted with the minority and opposed the 1983 law creating the national holiday to honor King, but reversed his decision around 1990 after he says he "learned" more about King"s achievements.
"I voted in myfirst year in Congress against it and then I began to learn and I studied and people talked to me." I had come from being in the military to running for Congress in a state that did not have a very large African American population and it had not been in issue. It just simply had not been."
McCain said his initial opposition to a holiday was based on his belief that "it was not necessary to have another federal holiday, that it cost too much money, that other presidents were not recognized."

"In my home state of Arizona, I was not proud that we were one of the last states to recognize Dr.
Arizona voters eventually approved a measure in 1992,. But among other issues critics raise are McCain"s vote against the 1990 Civil Rights Act, which sought to curb discrimination in the workplace (and eventually passed as the 1991 act), as well as his short-lived support for South Carolina"s right to fly the confederate flag over the statehouse during the 2000 primary. He later reversed his position on the flag and called for its removal, referring his initial position an "act of cowardice."

The MSM has totally neglected the fact that Cindy McCain fought Mothers Against Drunk Driving in MADD's campaign to label alcohol content on containers. Well, how will that register with the "religious right" and in the Bible belt? Besides getting years to pay delinquent taxes, the McCains can leave their money in the bank and pay as they want to. I know that the foreclosure victims would like for McCain to give them the same considerations. But, he claimed that they made poor choices. But, the MSM and the Kelly O'Donnells of the world just smile and call him the maverick. Well, maverick this---John McCain.

It appears that the "religious right" will embrace anything and anybody, as long as they are not Democrats. Dems vs married gay preachers (the rr will choose to back the married gay preacher or married Congressmen in bathrooms). What is McCain's religious leaning; if any?

In case you weren't familiar with the constitution, religion is not a cause to disqualify someone for presidential office.

You must not be familiar with Harr-y Re-id's religious affiliation either. Why don't you look it up and get back to me.

Hint: it begins with an "M"

In case you're not familiar with our country, religion apparently IS cause to disqualify someone for presidential office.

Nobody said it should be that way, lawfully, but if we're discussing the extreme right Christian conservatives, then history suggests religion is an issue.

I think Grunty is referring to the fact that some of the religious right considers Mormonism as a cult. Huchabees followers in particular, they can be quite intolerant.

I do think they will hold their noses, even if Romney is the VP. There is a strong effort to make these people understand the significance of this election and the possible placement of judges. They appear to be understanding.

All Grunty asked was how the Religious Right would react to a flip-flopping Mormon VP. In case you don't know, Mormons have a history of denigrating Catholicism...and blacks and women and Jews.

BTW, please quote where he mentioned anything about religion disqualifying anyone for VP.

Total overreaction.

It's amazing how comfortable many commenters here are with making broad, sweeping statements about an entire faith. All Christians are not members of the religious right. All Christians do not support Republican policies. Many Christians are anti-war and anti-poverty activists because their faith inspires them to be.

Lumping all Christians into the Hagee/Parsley camp is just as stupid as lumping all Muslims into the jihadi/terrorist camp.

It would be nice if people would acknowledge that distinction.

True.

What _I_ think this type of article - if true - "proves" is that the "Religious Right" are _not_ Christians.

The people YOU describe sound like perhaps they actually understood what they see in the bible, even as awful a translation as the King James...

It is important for people to realize that some infinitesimal number of so-called "Christians" actually practice Jesus' teachings. I don't know - and I'm sure no one does know - what the real numbers look like, but just given personal experience it has to be well below 1 person in 100 who says they are _behave_ as if they actually are Christian. "From their fruits you will know them."

My point is, you have to give people a break for using that broad brush - there's a lot of truth to it, unfortunately.

Of course it's just my opinion, but from observation, the more a person claims to be Christian, the more volume, the more frequent the assertion, the more likely they are to be pretty much pure evil. Pure evil as in actively get in peoples faces and try to force them to be some particular way, all horrifically against the teachings of Jesus. To the REAL Christians I say, My Hat's Off To You!

Evangelicals who support the warmonger McCain prove one simple point: they are not really Christians. If they were how could they support McCain and his policy of killing innocents? This war has killed innocents by the thousands. He is also a liar and propagandists. Who would Jesus support? I doubt very seriously it would be a FRAUD like McCain.

It's something how they're willing to get behind a man who doesn't even attend church, never speaks on faith issues and called them 'agents of intolerance'. I guess it's because he's pro-life, against gays, and loves wars. Good call.

Why don't they give a damn about the unwanted baby after he/she makes it into the world unloved? They don't want you to abort the baby, but they damn sure don't want to give you welfare to take care of it, if you're poor. Then if the poor kid grows up to be a criminal, they'll love to build more prisons to house them. They'll damn sure give their asses the death penalty and stand outside and pray for them as they die. I guess so that they can't get back to Glory.

And why do they worry about what gay people are doing in the privacy of their own homes?

I think I mentioned this before. The religious right are not christians. They are a politically motivated group of people that tries to expand their rightwing agenda using the name of God or the Bible.

They are nothing more than wolves in sheep's clothing. Its unfortunate however that these religious right wing nuts have false prophets that use the media to enact their ideology. They are a bunch of sick people that is ruining the fabric of America.

Secondly, I just want to point out that abortion and gay bashing issues is nothing more than a "fake" platform for the republican party. They don't represent any group or want to do anything with the poor and middle class. Therefore, they go about this agenda of abortion and gay bashing so that they have some sort of issue to run against the democrats with.

your post struck home with me.

My sister and I were raised Southern Baptist. We attended several times a week, went on many "retreats" , I sung in the choir, etc. As we left home to pursue our lives, my sister, older, had a serious issue with her guy; her 11 year old daughter accused him of attempting to molest her. Sister, seriously disabled in an accident at work, needed help taking care of the situation. I took her daughter, and meanwhile my two incredibly well behaved nephews, 8 and 9, needed a place, too, while my sister moved and got re-situated in a place where they could live together.

My bad idea; I went to our Church and asked the congregation for help on my sister's behalf. It was early summer - perhaps someone with kids had a spare room and could help out for a couple of months. Instead of help, they chased me out of the place! There wasn't one single kind or understanding word. They accused my sister of bringing it on herself. We had been great members of the congregation for a LONG time and here when we needed a little help, suddenly our family are pariah. Even if they couldn't or didn't want to help, their response was an attack, yelling and all. Some Christians.

RTIII

P.S. Not only didn't we get help, someone called social services saying my sister couldn't handle her kids and they were taken away. We never recovered.

I am so sorry these things happened to your sister and her children (and you and your family). I will say that stories like this are by no means unusual.
The notion that folks like this should be the gatekeepers for tax payer monies to 'help' the poor is galling to me.
