Orlando Sentinel:

Walt Disney World employees won't be packing any heat in the company parking lots anytime soon.

The giant resort has declared that much of its sprawling property is exempt from a new state law that allows Floridians with concealed-weapons permits to keep firearms locked in their cars at work.

Disney, which has 60,000 employees and a long-standing policy against allowing guns on its land, cites an arcane -- and late-added -- loophole in the new law, which took effect Tuesday.

So did the SC say that I can carry my gun on your property and not just on my own and in public? And that there is nothing you can do about it maybe with exception of shooting me before I shoot you?

Wow... if that's true this is a nation going bonkers.

No. Florida passed a law, Disney said to their own employees "don't bother, we're exempt", and the NRA is challenging that in court.

Groups suing companies for claiming immunity from the law is certainly nothing new.

WHAT is wrong with the NRA?

Oh yeah, can't get enough of those guns sold. The death merchants, aka, gun makers, love rulings that give the illusion of safety all for the love of profit.

The NRA is run by gun lobbyists and gun whackos.

i got nothing against owning guns, if you want to, but the NRA serves no purpose other than to instill fear into people and serve their corporate gun manufacturer masters.

Eloquent, well-supported, home run of a statement.

And then reality set in...

How is it whacko to defend the plain words and meaning of the second amendment or the rest of the Bill of RIghts. Yes I support the right of the people to keep and bear arms, I also happen to support the ENTIRE BILL OF RIGHTS--what gives you the right to pick and choose--especially since gun control kills people.

gun control kills people.....

in reality you have no clue about anything going on in the adult world. your fantasy needs a therapist before you hurt yourself for real.

What's next? Should Disney characters get to carry guns in their costumes? Should 5-year-olds carry guns to school? How about each American gets a government issued gun at birth?

Just the most idiotic country on earth. Yes, I understand there are countries that are less safe than the U.S., but considering the education level in the states, there's no excuse.

Sorry, there is an excuse. The usual one: money. Americans are so easy to figure out.

Bamboozled--so far the only people talking about 5 year olds carrying guns and WMDs are people that are trying to severely restrict the right of law abiding citizens to keep and bear arms

It started with the Reagan Administration with an eight year interlude of sanity by bthe Clinton Adm.The last twenty eight years has seen America in the grips of a reactionary lunacy orgy.Occasionaly a ray of hope showed through like the defeat of Rob't Borke as a supreme court justice nominee, etc! But beyond that it has been a continuous and senseless nightmare .

This latest supreme court Scalia,"non decision"is guaranteed to bring about years of time consuming litigation with the only guaranteed outcome being America's remaining the most violent nation in the industrial society.

Incidently a prominant spokesman for reactionary lunacy has just left this world, his name is Jesse Helms,I am sure he has gone to a place where he won't have to worry about his heating bill for eternity.

Could someone please explain why, if owning guns makes someone or a country more secure:

Why are Afghanistan and Iraq not the safest countries on Earth?Everyone in Iraq owns a gun. And have Owned them since Saddam's time.

Everyone in Afghanistan have owned guns if they could afford them from the time firearms first became available.

So why are neither country safe?

I am serious. I would like an explanation. Why are we different?

Easy access to firearms in parts of Africa have lead to mass slaughter and the use of child soldiers who fetishize the guns almost as much as Americans do.

Simple--it puts the victim on an even playing field with the criminal who will be well armed no matter how many draconian and unconstitutional gun bans and gun laws you pass.

We are an entirely different culture. Entirely different geography, entirely different history, entirely different legal system, entirely different morals, all of it. Oh, and they've been involved in one conflict or another for most of their history. "Safe" becomes pretty relative when your only sense of perspective stems from your nation having been, and still being, a battlefield for yours and other conflicts.

They're in a war zone dude. Think on that.

Now, Switzerland, there's a shining example for a lot of reasons. As is pre-gun-control Britain.

So our morals and legal system would allow for everyone to carry a gun?

I still think Sneaky just wants the right to get a drop on anyone Sneaky wants...but really doesn't want the same for everyone else on the aircraft, in the school, on the subway, at church, in the courts, at the oncologist's office as their told their painful cancer is incurable, at the psychotherapists office as their spouse announces they want a divorce.

Where is John Stossell on this? Didn't he stand up for a company that fired its smoking employees? I remember that distinctly because he basically ambushed the employees into thinking he would be on their side of the issue. Instead he said, "Well, it is their company, shouldn't they be allowed to discriminate? You are hurting their insurance rates." I'm paraphrasing of course, but not by much.
The point is: where are the neo-fascists on this? What happened to corporate rights? The company is a person as long as it means the bottom line remains sacred.
No money in keeping guns away from ----- wait a minute, money, hmmm, maybe this isn't about guns or amendments at all...

I'm pro gun and have a permit to carry and I think the NRA goes way over board on to many issues, Disney has the right to keep firearms off their property just like the courts and federal building and i don't hear the NRA bitching about that. They need to pick the battles that are important and not crap like this.

The NRA are nothing but a shill for the gun and amunition manufacturers.

Your "right" to own a gun is simply the bottom line for yet another corporation.

It is as simple as that.

They are "pro-gun" because it is a very lucrative scam.

And if they force everyone in America to own and carry a gun so much the better.

Better profits that is.

I have to disagree with that. There are whole "classes" of firearms they wouldn't mind sacrificing (and have in the past) for the sake of keeping more traditional firearms. The NRA is another lobbyist group; one of the most powerful, yes, but simply another lobbyist group. Don't go chasing penumbras and reading too deep into it.

Wishful thinking. I suspect that NRA membership will see substantial gains in 2008/2009.

I've not been a member for years, but I plan to rejoin. I stil believe in registration, but w/the ground that is now being gained, I'd be a fool not to.

I just want to be able to reload and shoot targets, nothing more & nothing less, but even that simple pleasure comes under attack from the anti-gun folks. And they have no clue, no knowledge of any of it.

I agree entirely, the leadership is populated with kooks like LaPierre who promote the entire far right agenda. They are a special interest organization that lives on fear. Their answer to everything is -- more guns!
I have nothing against gun ownership, or gun clubs, etc., but the NRA has unfortunately become a nutty organization led by political cretins.

Yeah, but you want to be reasonable. Unfortunately, the anti-gun folks don't rest until each little law leads to a total ban. That is their goal. The NRA is what it is due to the extreme measures the opposition takes. I'm just a target shooter, of no concern to anyone, not a threat, but "they" come after me without explanation.

The NRA going all zealous the way they are is going to backfire on them I think in a serious way. The ruling was in their favor but they are now going to far. Honestly does the NRA think it' so big and so powerful they want want to take on Disney of things?

The Happiest Place ON Earth employeesneed guns in their cars? What is the position of the thousands of other companies who have employees and do not want the NRA telling them they have to let employees have guns available? Has it been too long since a crazed employee went nut and shot up their place of employment for people to see how this could affect them at their own workplace? Someone who needs the protection of a handgun who has taken safety courses and is not inclined to go nuts is one thing but to issue a blanket all the employees have to have the right to carry concealed or even have weapons avaiable at work confounds me.

And why people who have passed the background checks and classes to legally carry concealed should be banned from having a firearm locked in their car is beyond me.

So let me see if I get this straight: the NRA is now going to start telling private companies how to run their businesses? What, is the NRA a state within a state now like the Vatican?

Movements tend to lose public support when they go too far. The NRA is in over their heads here. How Disney decides to run its affairs is none of the gun fetishists' business.

If the anti-gun folks, much of the left, backed off, I'd rather suspect that citizen gun owners (NRA, whatever) would back off as well. But I dunno? Both sides seem pretty radical to me.
