Orlando Sentinel:

Walt Disney World employees won't be packing any heat in the company parking lots anytime soon.

The giant resort has declared that much of its sprawling property is exempt from a new state law that allows Floridians with concealed-weapons permits to keep firearms locked in their cars at work.

Disney, which has 60,000 employees and a long-standing policy against allowing guns on its land, cites an arcane -- and late-added -- loophole in the new law, which took effect Tuesday.

This is the dumbest thing ever it seems to me that we are on a slippery slop we now are telling property owner's and business's that they can no control guns on their own property, another loss of freedom and they do this because the NRA has nothing better to do. The NRA has over step their bounds this is the danger to our freedom. The Courts have gone beyond what reasonable.

If the courts don't strike this down, I will be sickened. How can a law allow people to carry guns on other people's property if that person/enity has declared their property gun-free? I don't get it. Luckily Disney has tons of money to get the best lawyers to fight this.

Well I don't smoke and both my parents died as a result of their smoking, but laws can force bars and restaurants, all private property, to ban smoking, so who knows, maybe we all will be forced to have guns on our premises, too? Government intrusion is a slippery slope. Once they start intruding, there's no end to it. Better to keep government out of it, IMO, and if you don't like smoking, go to [or work at] another bar or restaurant. The overall good would be that we retain control of our own properties.

I'm not carrying water for the NRA but Disney is taking a real risk here. Suppose some psychotic gets into Disneyworld one day and guns down a dozen people. So everybody in sight sues Disney - they were deprived of the means of self defense because their guns were locked in the trunk of their car.

The whole right to bear arms has gotten completely beyond the founding father's original intent.

You want a gun? Join a well-regulated militia, take classes, get qualified, report to practice and continuing education monthly - this is what the NRA should be promoting.

Otherwise, you can't own a gun. You would be a danger to yourself, your family and the community.

Somehow personal responsibility goes out the window with this logic. Under your logic every human should be padded, wear leather and a helmet so in that rare event a bus crosses in front of me and I get hit, I am protected. Perhaps we should post amublances on every single street corner in America. CRAP happens and why in gods green earth would anyone hold a business or whatever accountable because some nut bar male loses it yet again in this country.

Until this country addresses it's HUGE violence issue, we will always have events like this every few months.

Is this the same well-regulated militia that you and I both already belong to as Americans? Is it the same one that is not a requirement, but a cause, for the right of the people to keep and bear arms and for that right to not be infringed?

Just checking.

This is a tempest in a teapot. What can or does Disney do about customers packing guns? I have not been there for a number of years but I do not remember going through a metal detector when entering. How about the cars of customers? Are these also checked for weapons? The only thing I can say to those who feel safer knowing Disney employees can not keep guns in their cars is double your protection by taking your security blankets if you go there.

Yep, I really want Hoss to be carrying a gun after he's been standing in line for 2 hours to see Mikey's teacup party with a bunch of screaming kids.

Guns, Disney.. really?

LOL, I hear that! Maybe that's why Disney doesn't want guns in the parking lot. Multiple instances of hari-kari after going through the park all day!

NRA isn't protecting a right but is seeking license. None of our constitutional rights are absolute and none confer license for unrestricted behavior. Also note that the 2nd amendment ruling talk specifically about the right in terms of ones' home.

yep, fact is they've been losing power and members lately. At least one alternate gun owner group, not so extreme, has sprung up to counter them. This is just a crusade to try to put themselves back on the map. Unfortunately, they still inspire enough fear in politicians that they will no doubt get their way. I have said it before-- where is the "well regulated militia" in all of this?

Lord knows that about halfway through the "It's a Small World" ride, one wishes to have a gun to commit suicide, but the NRA is going to make themselves look like complete morons for taking this battle to private business like a family theme park.

Yes well some people do not like the idea about how ttheir appearnce should be maintained like, clean shaven, haircut etc. I have also heard from employees that they would work no where else. So I guess it is a matter of going with the flow or fighting it, afterall some people were meant to be ditch diggers and some were meant to be doctors and others still were meant to work at the Disney parks madhouse.

I nearly lost it last week when the gun nuts wanted to bring guns onto the concourses at Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport. Now they want Mickey to be "packing!" Now I have heard everything.

What next, miniature invetro guns for junior to wield if birth becomes threatening?

Hopefully the more sick and extremist the NRA and its lawsuits become, the more average Americans will see the light about sane gun regulations. I actually hope they bring a few more absurd law suits out. Maybe concealed guns in fed buildings, schools, hospitals, etc.

Sorry--the only people who are claiming that junior needs a gun to go to pre school are people that want to disarm junior's law abiding parents

The NRA needs to re-read the Constitution. Disney World is private property and the 2nd Amendment doesn't apply to private property. "Government shall make no law abridging..." It says nothing about rules made by private property owners.
Since right wingers are so big on private property rights, they should know this.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:52 AM on 07/04/2008

Agreed. Much like any other "right" we have. I'm sure Disney (or any other that I can think of) doesn't allow unabridged freedom of speech, religion or illegal search and seizure for example.

The issue here is not private property because Disney is open to the public. How successful would a private property defense be if Disney decided to exclude Catholics or African Americans?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:21 AM on 07/04/2008

Like I stated below, they CAN bar people from handing out religious pamphlets etc correct?

The only question seems to be is if the parking lot is deemed public. I think that you can bar people from your parking lot that are carrying signs that say "Disney sucks". In fact you can bar said people from the common, public sidewalk next to your property also.

i know less than nothing about guns, but down here it can get a couple of hundred degrees in a locked car - does that pose a danger at all?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:47 AM on 07/04/2008

No, the temps in a car won't "set off" bullets. However, repeated exposure to the high temps you speak of can affect the chemical properties and the burning rate of the cartridge causing them to lose stability. The result is that, over time, the cartridges can develop excessive pressures.

A lot of people keep the bullets that they originally bought when they purchased the firearm, again not a good idea. If you are going to own a firearm, replace the ammo at least every couple years.

No danger below 500- 600 F. At those temperatures all car interiors would "melt" and some materials could autoignite.
