Oil Rig

PolitckerKY:

A proponent of expanded drilling in both the Gulf of Mexico and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, incumbent U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville) trotted out a unique defense while speaking to a meeting of Lexington area business and civic leaders.

"As you all probably know in Alabama and Mississippi and Louisiana and Texas, they think oil rigs are pretty," McConnell said, according to Lexington television station WTVQ.

Those states - all with borders touching the Gulf of Mexico - are most likely to be home to offshore oil exploration, should a federal moratorium on the practice be lifted.

Maximizing oil production will only postpone the need for alternatives. It is estimated that China will have as many or more cars on the road as the U.S. in 10 to 15 years. Other developing countries are also increasing their use of cars. There is no way enough oil can be pumped out of the ground for all of those cars.

Hybrid technology, by raising the MPG each car gets, will help us stretch our oil usage. In the end, it is hard to see how anything other than electric cars will help us deal with the problems associated with a drastic increase in the number of cars, and dwindling oil reserves.

If Sen. McConnell thinks that oil rigs are pretty, then he should live on one.

Hi Frappe,

Guess my Texas roots are showing . . . but park an oil rig in my backyard and I couldn't be happier.

Don't see any reason why I would want to make you look at one, or compel you to use gas . . . but, if we can tolerate your preferences for no rigs . . . hope you can tolerate our preference for rigs.

Have you ever been on a drilling platform? Talked to the drillers? Read a well log?

Hopefully you are amazed at the engineering that goes into these things?

Have a nice day!

"Lifting that ban is a principle plank of many Republicans' plans to lower gas prices this campaign season."

We all know what happens when Republicans take on an initiative to lower gas prices!

Naw, you'd find out that they own the mineral rights and then they'd sue you for your dog peeing on it.

Is McConnell still in the closet? You would think the Dems would find a way to out him, and pick up another seat easy.

But not half as pretty as the Senator. Just ask Senator Craig.

It's obvious who's paying the tuition bills for McConnell's children. Exxon, Shell, PB...........

I have a friend with a pet boa constrictor she pets, and an Iguana who likes to shower with her. It would appear that in all things, beauty is a personal issue.

I'm hoping this is the surprise Democratic Senate pickup. This guy bugs me like few others.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you think manmade structures are beautiful, if you appreciate the technology that a society of curious primates is capable of producing, if you marvel at human beings' capacity to learn, improvise, and create, an oil rig has to be one of the most beautiful things ever. And everyone who's driving a car, heating their houses with oil, running an airconditioner, or using public transportation should probably think they're pretty cool, because a lot of the energy you're using comes from them.

The Eiffel Tower is beautiful.
The Brooklyn Bridge is Beautiful, as is the Golden Gate Bridge.
The Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty are beautiful.
A 1962 and the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette with a 283 cu. in. engine are beautiful.
A Studebaker Avanti is beautiful.
An oil well is just OK.
