ST. LOUIS — Barack Obama celebrated "active faith" as an obligation of religious Americans and a chief agent of societal change while speaking Saturday to a nearly all-black roomful of churchgoers, but hoping to reach far beyond them.

Earlier in the day as he flew from Montana to Missouri, Obama told reporters he was surprised at how the media has "finely calibrated" his recent words on Iraq, and reaffirmed his commitment to ending the war if elected.

Making a less than two-hour stop in the battleground state of Missouri, the Democratic presidential nominee implored the thousands attending a national meeting of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, one of the nation's largest and most politically and civically active black denominations, to help fix national and local ills.

He preached individual responsibility, saying he knew he risked criticism for "blaming the victim" by talking of the need for parents to help children with homework and turn off the TV, to pass on a healthy self-image to daughters, and teach boys both to respect women and "realize that responsibility does not end at conception."

But Obama's main message was the government's duty to address what he said are "moral problems" _ such as war, poverty, joblessness, homelessness, violent streets and crumbling schools _ and to employ religious institutions to do it.

"As long as we're not doing everything in our individual and collective power to solve the challenges we face, the conscience of our nation cannot rest," he said.

Obama, who has made history by becoming the first black major-party presidential nominee, made frequent references to the civil rights movement and continuing struggles in the black community.

"We are not constrained by the accident of birth but can make of our lives what we will," Obama said. He was greeted when he arrived in the vast hall by the most thunderous cheering, waving and screaming that he has heard all week.

Story continues below

It was also his most enthusiastic delivery of late, employing preacher's cadences that were interrupted frequently by "Amens" and "yes."

Obama repeatedly referenced his religious faith in terms that would be familiar to white evangelicals as well as his black audience. Obama has highlighted faith and personal story over the past week as he campaigned in one-time GOP strongholds and talked more about God, country, and service than about rival Republican John McCain.

He hopes to draw more support from evangelical Christian voters than is typical for Democratic presidential candidates. Analysts are skeptical he can do that because of his support for abortion, gay rights and other issues.

And Obama was perplexed that his statement on Iraq was dissected as it was.

"I was a little puzzled by the frenzy that I set off by what I thought was a pretty innocuous statement," he said. "I am absolutely committed to ending the war."

On Thursday in North Dakota, Obama said that "I'll ... continue to refine my policy" on Iraq after an upcoming trip there. With a promise to end the war the central premise of his candidacy, the Obama campaign has struggled over the past two days to push back against Republicans and others who say his recent statement could be a softening or change in policy.

Obama has always said his promise to end the war would require consultations with military commanders and, possibly, flexibility.

"The tactics of how we ensure our troops are safe as we pull out, how we execute the withdrawal, those are things that are all based on facts and conditions," he said. "I am not somebody _ unlike George Bush _ who is willing to ignore facts on the basis of my preconceived notions."

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said Obama needs to "understand that his words matter."

"We are all absolutely committed to ending this war, but on Thursday Barack Obama's words indicated that he also shared John McCains commitment to securing the peace beforehand," he said.

The Illinois senator also said he and rival-turned-ally Hillary Rodham Clinton plan to raise money together in a series of fundraisers in New York during the coming week.

Two events are scheduled for Wednesday night _ one for his campaign and one to help Clinton pay off debts from her primary race against him. A third, for Obama, is a cash-collecting breakfast Thursday morning with women.

The fundraisers will be the first joint appearances by the former foes since their lovefest in Unity, N.H., on June 27.

Obama said his aides and those to former President Clinton are still arranging their first campaign appearances together. What role Bill Clinton will play in Obama's campaign has been a glaring question mark ever since the former president made comments earlier this year that Obama's supporters said injected race into the nomination contest.

Obama plans to campaign next week in North Carolina, Georgia and Virginia, all Southern states that have been the province of Republicans but where his campaign thinks he can make inroads _ or even win _ in part because of their large black populations.

It "would be pretty foolish" not to try, Obama said.

"Democrats can't shrink the map and win," he told reporters. "The solid South for Republicans is part of that shrinkage of the map. ... I want to be greedy."

Before leaving Montana, Obama spoke via satellite to a conference of the National Education Association, the largest teachers union.

How refreshing it would be to have a president who was willing to "refine his policy" if and when needed instead of what we have now......President Bush will never admit he made a mistake and would stay the course no matter what it cost or who got killed in the process.

I agree. Obama never wavered on Iraq-he's been consistent from the first day he announced his intensions to run. Republicans threw the hook and the dumb MSM took the bate. I pray for the day we have a fair and honest media. But i guess i'll just have to keep praying, because it won't ever happen. Thank god for alternatives like the huff, kos, carpetbagger, tpm, movoen and others.

The media's job is to report news, and what we've seen is (especially in regards to Obama this week) if there isn't any they just make it up.

Barack is way ahead in his thinking. He notices things that even some on the left dont notice. Let me give you an example. I havent see this little bit of info on Huffpost but a few weeks ago there was Poll I think it might be a CNN poll I'm not sure. In this poll it ask the question who do you trust more to handle the problem in Iraq well the results both men were tied. But thats not really the story think about it one guy wants to keep us in for a hundred years and another wants to get us out in 16 months. Isnt that peculiar but another poll said that 60%of Americans want the war to end. THere seem to be some kind of discrepancy here. So its not that people doesnt want the war to end its that they trust McCain more to handle the war. So whats a good strategy say you are going to refine your position on Iraq after you speak to the generals. That does NOT mean you are changing your position it just means that you are taking the advice of the general under consideration. What does that mean it means that Obama wants to get us out he is not dogmatic on a timetable he is willing to refine it base on what the general say.

I will say this again Barack Obama knows what he is doing. He is on top of things.

Carol

Yes, you are right...all of these people with "opinions" are entitled to them but they are not entitled to their own facts! Besides, liberals alone won't get him elected so I wish they would just relax...although I really believe that liberals still support him and that mostly republicans are on here trying to make it seem like there is a division...just like CNN showed some poll saying that there are still Hillary supporters who won't support him. My question is, why? Why do they need to keep fanning this flame??? Drama for the summer I guess, they know their ratings will go down during the summer so they are trying to drag out the drama....uuuggggghhhh....drives me mad I tell you!...lol

Yes, it's going to be a tough long summer for the media, they've got to compete against the summer Olympics this year. I suspect to see even more outrageous political reporting on their part. Stay tunned and brace yourself.

Yes, Carol he does know what he's doing, becoming the nominee proved it. He did after all take on the most powerful political couple in our history. Sen. Obama is doing what good leaders do, keeping his eye on the bigger picture. If he doesn't get elected his vision for this country will never transpire.

The fact that the MSN gives McCain a free pass ALL THE TIME, I feel confident that Obama has consulted with the military; and 16 months to remove troops from Iraq is what he stated and what he continues to say. You can't immediately get out of the mess that McCain, Hillary and Bush voted for and we have had to endure. I should say, the families of these soldiers have had to endure. Remember Hillary said 60 days! I trust Obama and if he realizes after consultation with the Military powers that be and it has to be a little longer, so be it. We can't just walk out of the Iraq. Besides
McCain wants to "occupy" Iraq and install military bases? At whose cost? The USA. Why do we keep pouring money into other countries ...do they realize with the loss of jobs in the US to outsourced countries like Mexico and India that there will eventually be "less people working in the US" to pay taxes that support their dirty deeds. McCain would do nothing to bring our troops home ... he would come up with inane idea that the troops should be kept in Iraq. That is unless Bush starts a war in Iran. Three wars going on, a draft instituated by McCain, and our country being flushed down the gutter. VOTE DEMOCRAT. We need to take our country back now!!! McSlim...well, he can go back to his "compound" and live on his wife's money. SCARY

Baracky's problem is that he did not have a speech written by someone else in front of him so he got caught actually speaking his mind. The press reported it. Baracky didn't like it, so the press gave him a mulligan and let him try it again two hours later.

He still didn't convince anyone, though.

And a lot of his early speeches were recycled from Deval Patrick just like his "yes, we can" slogan.

He reads really well. That is his strength. Delivering a speech. Off the cuff, he's not so good, um, uh, you know what I mean. He always gets into trouble.

Your hatred is only matched by your ignorance! The least you could do is spell the man's name correctly. May be you intentionally misspelled his name to demonize him. For your information, Barak Obama is United States Senator representing the fifth most populous state in the nation. The good people of Illinois, the land of Lincoln, saw something in this good man to elect him to the Senate. Your attempt to denigrate him makes you look very, very, small.

There's a reason we got GWB in the white house for 8 yrs! The viewers no longer demand quality news. They refuse to do their homework and research candidates. Majority put on Faux news and in their half dead state of mind absorb everything they see.
If this doesn't change, we'll get a third term of Bush... God forbid!

The presumptive Democratic nominee angered teachers (again) at the NEA conference Saturday when discussing his proposal to pay teachers more if their students perform well on tests or if they take on added responsibilities.

They did the same thing last year when he mentioned the plan at their meeting in Philadelphia. Obama addressed the group Saturday via satellite.

“I know this wasn’t necessarily the most popular part of my speech last year. But I said it then and I say it again today because it’s what I believe.”

Now he's acting preemptively. Good.

From now on, he should provide the lazy media with all prior statements on each subject, because they're too stupid to Google.

I don't want three days of lies from the media then one day of a non-apology.

The lie sticks.

They are supposed to do at least cursory research PRIOR to airing reports. It took me maybe 5 minutes to find nearly all of Obama's big statements on Iraq. They're consistent.

They need to admit the error and correct the error. These quasi mea culpa stories aren't enough.

They're researching after they air the story? WTF?

exactly how does refining the position=equal changing his position? Why can't you people be honest! All of us human beings do refine our positions all the time without changing them. At no time Did Obama say that he was changing his position and would no longer call for bringing the troops home. By the way, throughout his campaign, Sen. Obama always said that he will be "careful bringing the troops home" as Bush and the neo-cons were "sending them there." Apparently you, the propagandist in the McCain camp, and the corporate media, were either not paying attention or are deliberately try to distort his position
