LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Will Smith's box-office superpowers remain intact. Smith's "Hancock" _ the story of a boozing, foul-mouthed superhero who dresses like a street bum _ led the Fourth of July weekend with a $66 million debut, according to studio estimates Sunday.

That raised the total for Sony's "Hancock" to $107.3 million since it opened Tuesday night to get a jump on the holiday.

It was a familiar place for Smith, one of Hollywood's most-consistent draws. "Hancock" is his fifth movie to open at No. 1 over the Fourth of July. The others were "Men in Black" and its sequel, "Independence Day" and "Wild Wild West."

"Will Smith, Mom, apple pie and the Fourth of July. It doesn't get any better," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony. "People just so relate to him and the characters that he plays. They totally embraced it as something different, something fresh."

The previous weekend's top flick, the Disney-Pixar animated tale "WALL-E," slipped to second place with $33.4 million. Its 10-day total is $128.1 million.

Overall business slipped for the first time in a month. The top 12 movies pulled in $158.7 million, down 4 percent from the Fourth of July weekend last year, when "Transformers" opened at No. 1 with $70.5 million, according to box-office tracker Media By Numbers.

Revenues this summer are at $2.22 billion, about 2 percent ahead of Hollywood's record pace in 2007, when summer revenues topped $4 billion for the first time.

"Hancock" co-stars Jason Bateman as a public-relations man who tries to give an image-makeover to Smith's cranky character. Charlize Theron plays Bateman's wife, who has her own reasons for wanting the superhero to stay out of her life.

It was the second-best opening weekend for Smith, following last December's "I Am Legend" at $77.2 million, and was his eighth-straight movie to open at No. 1.

"`Hancock' did not get great reviews, but it doesn't matter. A guy like Will Smith is arguably the most-bankable star in the world," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers. "He's utterly likable and he's real, and that permeates from the screen to the audience."

Overseas, "Hancock" pulled in an additional $78 million in 50 other countries.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. "Hancock," $66 million.

2. "WALL-E," $33.4 million.

3. "Wanted," $20.6 million.

4. "Get Smart," $11.1 million.

5. "Kung Fu Panda," $7.5 million.

6. "The Incredible Hulk," $5 million.

7. "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," $3.9 million.

8. "Kit Kittredge: An American Girl," $3.6 million.

9. "Sex and the City," $2.3 million.

10. "You Don't Mess With the Zohan," $2 million.

HA! Just goes to show you that movie critics don't always know what the hell they're talking about.

Not really. Just because its popular doesn't mean its good. As PT Barnum once said: "No one ever went broke by underestimating the taste of the American public"

I thought it was actually - "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public."

I liked Hancock a lot, including the "twist" and would recommend it to any Will Smith fan. I don't know why so many critics got their panties in a knot over this movie. I think they spend too much time in darkened theaters. The rest of us live in the real world with it's stress and grind and we like a good diversion once in a while at the movies.

Yeah, I don't get the objections to "the twist." I really enjoyed this movie, much moreso than many others I've seen recently. It actually felt rather "fresh" to me. Not to say that Iron Man or The Incredible Hulk we bad. They weren't. They just didnt really grab me. And dont get me started on the travesty that was Indy 4. Egads.

Yeah, they could have taken Hancock in a different direction and that would have been fine too. But I dont think it really hurt the film.

I guess that I am the only one who really liked the "twist" in the movie. It was totally unexpected. I actually went to see it twice. It definitely was popcorn fare, but I had a good time. I laughed out loud throughout the movie, and they actually had decent actors that backed up the action. Oh, and I just became a huge fan of Jason Bateman. He was hilarious.

I would agree. I liked Hannock until the "twist" (which I won't reveal here, but you'll know what I mean if you see it). After that, the movie seemed to go off the rails. The movie worked when it was about a schlub cleaning himself and transforming himself into a real hero.

Will Smith admits he came up with a formula with his agent. He looked and most of the top grossing movies were summer movies with action and lots of special effects. He has been doing those movies ever since and will continue to.

When you see Starring Will SMith - its time to turn your brain off

George Clooney also does a lot of schlock but then will make the odd good movie. Will Smith has also done some good work. There is no doubt about it, he is an immensely talented actor, not just an action hero type.

Clooney has done some good movies but what has Smith ever done that wasn't formulaic Hollywood tripe?

I have a feeling of nausea when I think about how much movie starts make and how much money is spent on mediocre movies. The price of a ticket to see such garbage is too much for me. I no longer go to the movies. This is not to say that Will Smith is not talented. But 25 million dollars is too much for any actor, no matter how popular.

How about 400 mil for Rush Limbaugh and 500 mil for Howard Stern?

I think some actors are over paid and some actors are under paid.

At least so many of the actors do have talent, I must admit. I am also horrified at how much those two creeps are being paid.

No surprise here. Will Smith is a Hollywood franchise. His name alone is enough to get people inside a movie theater. Didn't his stink bomb Wild Wild West do well its opening weekend only to crash and burn when all was said and done? We'll see how the box office for Hancock holds up next week going up against Hellboy II and then a few days later The Dark Knight.

Actually no. WWW made a quarter of a billion dollars at the box office AND then did pretty well in the DVD/VHS (remember them?) sales and rentals, THEN the cable and network rentals.

It didn't crash and burn at all, it just didn't do as well as the rest, which I guess for a Smith movie that might be considered crashing?

But I know of thousands of actors that would LOVE to have a flick that crashed and burned with those kinds of numbers.

I was sort of disappointed in Hancock. I loved the first half and then it just sort of jumped the shark.

AND IT IS TOO DANGED SHORT. The movie is only 95 minutes long. Sorry but for the 25 million WIll charges, and the 15 million Charlize charges, and poor Jason was probably lucky to get a couple of mil I WANT A LONGER MOVIE!!

There were so many things that didn't make sense or were not resolved. Some were just plain dumb and some where WTF moments. They could have explained a LOT, in those extra 25 minutes WE DIDN'T get.

But mostly when it turned into a love story half way through, I about lost it. I don't want no steeking love story in the middle of my action flick.

SO if you go, you can leave halfway through and not really miss much.

BUT it's a good popcorn flick if you turn your brain to off.

I have to agree. It's like the original plot just ended, so they started a new one half way through.

Having said that, I enjoyed it as a light-hearted summer action flick.
