**UPDATE BELOW** Behind Webb's Decision

Vice presidential searches are always punctuated by potential candidates making stern statements about their lack of interest in the job, or their sense of obligation to their local constituencies. But on Monday, Sen. Jim Webb offered what appeared to be a far more sincere rejection to a possible V.P. offer.

Considered by many an ideal running mate for Barack Obama, the Virginia Democrat (through his Senate office) said that "under no circumstances" would he consider the nomination.

The move makes Webb one of a handful of individuals to preemptively take themselves out of the running (see: Strickland, Ted). And while the sentiments of politicians can surely change, those who have followed Webb's career note that his free-talking temperament and history of being his own boss (he's been a film writer, journalist, secretary of the navy, etc...) made him unlikely to want, let alone accept, the running mate role.

Here is the statement:

"Last week I communicated to Senator Obama and his presidential campaign my firm intention to remain in the United States Senate, where I believe I am best equipped to serve the people of Virginia and this country. Under no circumstances will I be a candidate for Vice President. "A year and a half ago, the people of Virginia honored me with election to the U.S. Senate. I entered elective politics because of my commitment to strengthen America's national security posture, to promote economic fairness, and to increase government accountability. I have worked hard to deliver upon that commitment, and I am convinced that my efforts and talents toward those ends are best served in the Senate. "In this regard, the bipartisan legislative template we were able to put into effect through 18 months of work in order to enact the new, landmark GI Bill will serve as a prototype for my future endeavors in government. This process, wherein we brought 58 Senators from both parties to the table as co-sponsors, along with more than 300 members of the House, gives me renewed confidence that the Congress can indeed work effectively across party lines and address the concerns of our citizens.

"At this time I am also renewing my commitment to work hard to make sure that Senator Obama wins both Virginia and the presidency this November. He is a man who speaks eloquently about our national goals and calls for the practical solutions that must be put into place to obtain them. I will proudly campaign for him."

Marc Ambinder has more details on how Webb came to his decision:

Barack Obama's vice presidential selection team has begun to ask potential candidates for information and documents, a signal that the formal vetting phase of the search process has begun.

Last week, members of the team gave Sen. James Webb of VA a list of what they needed to begin their investigation of his background and career. Webb refused, telling them that he did not want to be considered for the position.

A Democrat close to Webb confirms that a request for documents preceded his declaration to the Obama campaign. The Democrat said that Webb did not want to relive the vigors of a campaign so soon after his election to the Senate.

Jay Inslee. Has spine and actually shows up to defend the Constitution. Has what Obama lacks:

We need him in the Senate. I hope that during the next 8 years the power of the Senate can be restored so we can have more of a balance of powers. We need these powerful Senators to stay and help renew the prestige of the Senate and this goes for Clinton, Biden, and many of the others who have been suggested for VP.

If Obama's to win the presidency, he needs her on the ticket. Besides, right now she appears more of a progressive than he ever was.

I wondered about that too. Guaranteed human as VP. Someone who knows the tragedy of big picture decisions, knows that every life counts to someone, would not kill in the name of patriotism - security - justice - expedience - whatever. Could be Caroline, could be Elizabeth Edwards.

Good choice but after Obama threw Clark under a tank after Clark's remarks about McCain, I doubt that Clark wil be a VP pick.

Well at lease the guy is honest. Richardson would be a good choice. Any pragmatic democrat not tied to the far left i.e. DailyKos/MoveOn types would be a good choice.

Geez, did you catch the debate between Biden and Graham? It was akin to watching a duel between a 486. cpu/brain (Graham ) and a 286.cpu/brain ( Biden ). Graham cleaned Biden's clock!
I've watched Biden for years and, it seems to me, more often than not, Biden steps on his own tongue. That is, his brain may be full of useful information, but it's too damned slow. By the time ol' Joe's 286. cpu/brain pulls the data, the moment is long past.
Naw, IMO, it's best not to place likable, but slow witted politicians into positions of great responsibility...

Webb is a strong choice but far from ideal. I take him at his word; he knows his own limitations and can best serve as senator at present. I liked the idea of Webb as a VP running mate but can't see him as a POTUS down the line. He's a bit one dimensional. That could change as he gains experience and maturity.

Always better to know some history before sounding off about ANYTHING as vague as the future: Webb has MORE experience that Obamee--esp. in military 'affairs'--and has served an equivalent period. All the same, Webb is wise to pass on the U.S. Vice Presidency; it would lead nowhere. As a Senator, he can poss. increase his ethos to the level of John Warner or Ted Kennedy......

Besides, if Obamee stumbles, Webb would LOSE everything he has nurtured......

There are no "ideal" candidates, unfortunately they're all human - well, most of them anyway, I don't know about mccain.

Webb is a good candidate, but I blieve he just had some baggage that he didn't want aired, or, "misconstrued" in the glare of the media. I'm not saying something that is a deep, dark secret. You know, just something he feels could potentially distract away from the historic, inspired candidacy of Barack Obama.

If he is withdrawing for those reasons, he is a truly honorable man.

But we have lots of great candidates to choose from. Webb isn't the only one.

Maybe Webb simply believes he can do the most good by being an ally in the Senate. He hasn't been a Senator all that long; maybe he wants a crack at the job under a Democratic president. I can understand that.

Really? We have a lot of great candidates to choose from? Please, fill us in, who are they? The best 2 candidates were silenced by our guvment sponsored media - Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich - and what the heck, Mike Gravel wasn't too bad either, but aside from that I don't know who you could possibly be talking about. Feingold would be good, but lots of "great" candidates? I don't think so.

Let me guess. He's a Muslim, who was sworn in on the Koran, and if he wins all American will be issued prayer rugs. He's also an elitist who went to Harvard, paid for by his super rich Saudi family. He met a 60's radical in the 90's, so he must have been involved with this person's actions back then. Since he would have been 7 years old, which also makes him a juvenile delinquent. Oh, and lots not forget the most important thing, he fathered two black children.

this sounds like a public relations way of getting out with dignity. why not? Most likely, Obama has already picked his VP and informed Webb that he was not the choice. Obama cannot afford to lose Webb in a state that could go Republican were he to vacate. Wesley Clark is the guy they need. He's not afraid to go on the offensive, and his military credentials are impeccable.

with the mess bush left, is anybody? hopefully, obama will win, but he's inheriting a situation from bush as bad as what roosevelt received from hoover. it's going to be a thankless job. as for clark, he seems as ready as any of those bandied about.
