NEW YORK — Marcus Brauchli was named executive editor of The Washington Post on Monday, three months after resigning under pressure from the top newsroom job at The Wall Street Journal.

Brauchli, who is 47, is to succeed Leonard Downie Jr., who has led the Post for 17 years and will retire Sept. 8 at the age of 66. Brauchli will be in charge of both the Post's print and online editions.

Brauchli's appointment is part of a broader leadership change at The Washington Post, which named Katherine Weymouth, who is 42, publisher in February. Weymouth is a member of the Graham family, which controls The Washington Post Co.

Weymouth said in a statement that Brauchli's broad experience would help the newspaper "navigate the new world of media," building on the standards set by Downie and his predecessor, Ben Bradlee.

At the Journal, Brauchli oversaw the integration of the newspaper's print and online operations. At the Post, both washingtonpost.com executive editor Jim Brady and the newspaper's managing editor, Phil Bennett, will report to Brauchli. Bennett was seen as a potential candidate for executive editor.

Shortly after announcing his retirement last month, Downie told AP that the Post needed a new, younger editor to lead the paper's next phase of change as it adapts to the new realities of the journalism business being wrought by the Internet.

Like many other newspapers, The Washington Post is struggling with revenues declining due to the nation's economic slump and to advertising dollars flowing online. The Post recently went through its third round of job cuts and reported an 11 percent decline in print advertising revenues for its first quarter.

Online news readership is growing, but revenue from online advertising hasn't grown nearly enough to replace the losses in revenue from print advertising.

Brauchli (whose name is pronounced BROCK'-lee) , became managing editor of The Wall Street Journal in May 2007, shortly after Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. mounted a bid to acquire the Journal's parent company, Dow Jones & Co.

Brauchli left that post in April.

A native of Boulder, Colo., Brauchli started his career at Dow Jones in 1984 as a copy reader for its news service and was soon posted to Hong Kong. He later served as Scandinavia correspondent for The Wall Street Journal's European edition, reported for the Journal from Tokyo and became China bureau chief. He moved to New York in 1999 as a news editor and became national news editor the following year.

Brauchli left the top newsroom job at the Journal just four months after News Corp. closed its acquisition of the paper, saying he had come to believe the paper's new owners should have an editor of their own choosing.

News Corp. had moved quickly to shake up the Journal shortly after buying it, bringing in more political stories and reorganizing the paper's layout. It also installed a news executive above Brauchli _ Robert Thomson, former editor of The Times of London. Thomson's title was publisher but he had broad editorial oversight of the Journal and other Dow Jones properties.

Brauchli didn't return phone and e-mail messages seeking comment Monday evening.

Downie joined The Washington Post as a summer intern in 1964 and later served as investigative reporter, a metro reporter, London correspondent and national editor. He oversaw the paper's Watergate coverage as its deputy metro editor.

Downie, who said he would will turn his focus to writing projects, will stay on as a vice president at large at The Washington Post Co., a title that Bradlee also holds.

The Washington Post Co. also owns Newsweek magazine and Kaplan Inc., a major education company.

The Wall Street Journal is just FOX News in print. So now the FOX News cancer spreads to the Washington Post. Sad times.

The NY TImes headlines WaPo names "outsider" to top editorial job...who are we kidding here? Outsider? Marcus has been brought in to bring this once great paper more in line with the official Murdoch line...anyone who imagines otherwise is deluded.

And the once great NY TImes continues to debase itself ...

And the media race to the bottom as they slowly expire is on! The NY Times went out to a big lead with its own traitorous neocon Judith Miller propagandizing on its front page, but at The Washington Post they yanked the vinyl human mask off David Broder to reveal the devil. (Everyone, try to look surprised.) Not to be outdone, the Times hired the devil's nephew William "the bloody" Kristol. But the Post comes back strong with Karl Rove at Newsweek and an editor straight from the official paper of the Republican Party headed for the Post, where its Republican hag ombudsman has been rewriting the standards of journalism to support her paper's lack of journalistic standards. And over in the corner, Bob Woodward works on another bestseller about George Bush's integrity and brilliance. The toast of Georgetown.

I miss the news.

A bit off thread: I wonder how many books will be written about how Murdoch is changing the WSJ & how America's newspapers of record [LA TIMES, WASHINGTON POST, etc] are picking up the editing & writing talent Murdoch is shedding to meet the challenge of falling circulation & falling advertising. It will be interesting to see if & how the sites of newspapers of record will fit in with changes which must be made if a paper is to survive as a newspaper of record. Which papers will no longer be newspapers of record; which publications will become newspapers of record?

YOU KNOW WHAT I THINK IT IS...

You've got to admit that conservatives are much better at "gaming the media" than are liberals. Conservatives have gotten an incredible amount of mileage out of one simple, basic tactic, which is: 1) Deliberately misinterpret a liberal opponent's motives, words, or actions; 2) Grossly exaggerate the importance of those misinterpreted motives, words, or actions; 3) Use clever "memes." Give the media the "hooks" their looking for. "Game the media." You can't argue with a meme -- the only way to fight a meme (like John McCain's "heroism" for example) is with another meme (kind of the way Republicans trashed the candidacies of Michael Dukakis and John Kerry). But no. Liberals and Democrats just get all defensive and DO try to argue with conservatives' memes. (If you don't know what a meme is, look it up:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meme
)

My theory on the hiring of conservatives like Rove, Kristol, and now Brauchli is that it has nothing at all to do with politics and everything to do with the fact that cons have become "masters of the meme." They know how to hook readers and keep them hooked. Liberals and Democrats are lagging WAY behind in this area, yes, are positively clueless....

"Their" goal is to totally discredit the print newspapers for the next generation. Murdoch will be remembered, when he goes (he's quite elderly), as the robber barons' publisher. He's gotten away with it for quite a long time, but THE TIMES THEY ARE A' CHANGIN'

I hope to see some opinion pieces soon from people who are familiar with Mr. Brauchli and his work to let us know what they think will happen to the Post as a result of this new appointment. The fact that Rupert Murdoch didn't want him is an encouraging sign. The WSJ has one of the worst if not the worst editorial pages but their news staff (at least pre-Murdoch) was a very good one. I'm cautiously optimistic that Brauchli will make some much needed improvements at the Post. I guess time will tell.

Let's hope that Brauchli was interested in actual news gathering and was thus out of favor in the Murdoch "newsroom."

it seems that one of the Post's goals (in appointing Brauchli) is to make some money from its website, as print circulation spirals downward. but I can't believe the Post's news story on Brauchli didn't even mention the notoriety of the WSJ's far-right editorial board -- except that as other posters note, the Post is a far cry from the journalistic standard-bearer it once was. we periodically cycle back through Washington (my home town) after overseas assignments, and every time I'm shocked again at how right-wing the Post has become...
