Anti-Lieberman Group Delivering 43,000 Signatures To Senate

Wednesday morning, Brave New Films and its allies will deliver a petition with over 43,000 names to selected members of the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee, asking them to strip Senator Joe Lieberman of his rank and committee chairmanship when the 111th Congress takes its seats in 2009.

"We CANNOT tolerate a leader of the Senate Democratic Caucus who supports George Bush and McCain's War in Iraq. We CANNOT tolerate a Democratic chairman of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee who endorses and stumps for McCain," the petition reads.

Lieberman's spokesman responds: "Americans are tired of this type of old, petty, partisan politics. Sen. Lieberman will continue to put the country's interests before partisan interests."

Lieberman is someone that likes Republicans, campaigns for Republicans, wishes he could be a Republican, would be a Republican... if not for his near-total devotion to liberal causes.

He's a solid progressive on every issue that does not involve the US becoming a fascist militaristic expansionist empire that houses a majority of the world's defense industry.

For that, he should be stripped of his chairmanship on the Homeland Security committee and his membership in the Armed Services committee, and be given a few committees where his particular ideological problems are not so dangerous - to The Country and to the Democratic Party.

It will be nice (providing that the dems have the majority) to see Lieberman given the other boot right after Bush gets the first one. Then he can move to his beloved Israel. He can hope for the best there completely surrounded by enemies that are getting angrier everyday because of Israel's boneheaded policies toward the Palistians.

Yes, Israel's policies have worked so well that their problems continue to become worse. I have no sympathy for the Israelies, they chose to live in the middle of what they knew was going to hell for them.

Just signed it, although it's effect will be nil. The only way to get rid of him is to stop the Dems from caucusing with him and later to get the people of Connecticut to realize that he is embarrassing them .

I don't know any Ct Democrats that are especially partial to Lieberman by any stretch.
If you remember he went Independent because Ned Lamont won the Democratic primary. People were going as far as changing parties from Independent to Democrat on their lunch hours to vote for Lamont and get rid of him.

Right now, the Dems can do nothing about him because they do not hold a majority in the Senate and need his traitorist @** for votes. If they can elect some more Dems in Nov, then ousting him will not be a problem.

Unfortunately we need Joe for a few more months if we want to maintain a majority in the senate until W leaves town.

After we win a clear majority in the senate we can then jettison Joe Israel and send him to purgatory powerless and without a committee.

I would much rather see CT recall this guy for lying about his intentions if elected. Either way he will be finished in November.

There are not one, but two forseeable situations where he needs to be treated very carefully -

Where he's the tiebreaker (#51 currently).

Where he's the filibuster-breaker (#60 if Obama wins)

The chances that the second option happens in 2008 or 2010 or 2012 are pretty good - or I would advocate a much more severe treatment just for his support of Bush.

Yes, we can't do much for a few more months but this petition and others will hopefully carry more weight once the Dems regain a solid majority. I have a hunch this is already planned behind the scenes by the Dem leadership.

The petition does state that this would take effect in the 111th Congress, which means they'll likely have enough majority to do just this. But you're right, you can't do it now, because the majority would revert to the GOP if the Senate goes 50-50.
