Deadline Hollywood Daily:

Quentin Tarantino has just gone out with his long-anticipated script about World War II. But here's the weird thing sources are telling me: not only is Laurence Bender attached to produce Inglorious Bastards, but there's also "a possibility" that Harvey Weinstein will be producing as well but not financing it. This certainly adds fuel to those rumors that The Weinstein Co is having movie money woes.

This latest Tarantino epic, originally for Miramax and originally set for 2001, has been so long in the works that some people thought it might never see the light of day. Tarantino himself has described it as a Spaghetti Western meets World II film that's an homage to the Dirty Dozen with a story about a group of soldiers on their way to be executed who get the chance of a reprieve. I hear it's gone out to Universal, Warner Bros, Paramount (all yesterday) and Sony (today). As usual, there's a lot of secrecy surrounding this Quentin project sent out by William Morris.

I'm guessing it's about some really cool hipsters who sit around a table at a diner exchanging cool hipster banter, and then they go and murder some other people who just think they are cool.

All the while using the F-word like a vowel in order to make it "edgy."

Reading everything on here, I beg to differ. QT is an artist. I sense the typical left wing wealth and success envy.....Quentin gets my money any day...................

Refresh my memory: by how much did his last offering, an homage to the cheesy, schlocky B movies that MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 used to mercilessly mock, miss making its money back in domestic release? Now why would any of us be envious of that foot-fetishing dropout's fanboy valentines to stuff that you can't even call "tripe" without insulting tripe?

Exactly. With Grindhouse, Tarantino (and Rodriguez) made a 3 1/4 hour tribute to bad movies by making a bad movie. It was a domestic bomb (despite critical adoration of it), and it wasn't even released on DVD in its original version because the Weinsteins had to figure out some way of making their money back. That's why they split it in two.

I am excited to see Tarantino stretch a bit. Let's face it, the entirety of his work draws upon 1970's culture, and while this is still derivative of 1970's filmmaking, it will mark his first picture (that I know of)set prior to that time. No seventies Kitch dialogue. I think this is precisely what he should be doing. Let us see what Tarantino can do when he moves out of his comfort zone. Frankly I am glad to see a desire to grow and develop in Tarantino. I think it is interesting also that he identifies Where Eagles Dare as the Zeitgeist of that genre. I have always thought of it as an experiment in contrast between the quintessential American hero and the quintessential British hero. Eastwood is taciturn and all action and common sense (loved the lobbing back of the German hand grenade), and Burton is verbose and brilliant and clever, outwitting us all with his complicated allegiances. Tarantino handles an ensemble cast well. I suspect it will more closely resemble Dirty Dozen.

Tarantino is the most over-rated director/producer in Hollywood. His films are contrived, silly, comic bookish ripoffs. Poorly written, stiff acting, annoying in-your-face tripe. If I never see another wound spray fake blood like a firehose it'll be too soon for me.

Perhaps this time he won't blatantly rip off of other people's hard work like he did with Reservoir Dogs.

That's all he's got...not to say he isn't talented. It's just that his talent is in taking other people's ideas and then turning them into great movies(usually). Having been an acquaintance of his many years ago, I can assure you this is true.

True. The Kill Bill movies (especially the second one) were self indulgent tripe. And who wants to see a 3 hour tribute to crappy movies (Grindhouse)?

Forgive me if I don't come running to Quentin's WWII "epic".

Reservoir Dogs is QT's best film. I can still watch that one. His others, not so much.

Hey, I hope that Quentin IS indulged by the powers that be.
Yes, I agree, that "Grindhouse" should have been released as two separate movies (sitting through the first part, "Planet Terror" so exhausted me that I couldn't sit still for "Death Proof") but we always have DVDs. And I learned to appreciate both of those two halfs of "Grindhouse" from happening upon their quadzillion rebroadcasts over HBO's dozen channels while surfing.
The studios don't have a clue what makes Quentin tick and if they get any creative control over editing or dictating of time length of his pictures they will just interfere with what makes him great.
Please don't ever "leash" Quentin as it will be a sign of the Apocalypse.

Here's what makes Tarantino "tick": he's a developmentally-arrested high school dropout whose initial training consisted of renting ten movies a night from the video store he used to work at and has consequently been making fanboy valentines to the cheesy '70s B movies that, if made today, end up either premiering on the Sci-Fi Channel on Saturday nights or going direct-to-video.
