TEHRAN, Iran — Iran test-fired nine missiles Wednesday, including ones capable of hitting Israel, making a dramatic show of its readiness to strike back if the United States or Israel attacks it over its nuclear program.

The launches sparked strong U.S. criticism and a jump in oil prices _ underlining fears Iran might seal off the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf waterway through which 40 percent of the world's crude passes, if military conflict does break out.

The tests of the long- and medium-range missiles did not appear to mark a significant advance in Iran's missile capability _ similar ones have been tested previously. But the timing and location were clearly aimed to send a message, coming as Iran has sharply stepped up the tone of its warnings of retaliation if attacked. This week, a top official of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, Ali Shirazi, warned Tel Aviv would be "set on fire" in any Iranian retaliation.

The tests took place amid a military exercise that Iran has been conducting in the Hormuz strait, where Tehran has threatened to block oil traffic in response to any U.S. or Israeli military action.

Iran has long warned it would strike back for any attack against it. But it has sharpened its rhetoric since Israel's military sent warplanes over the eastern Mediterranean in June for a large military exercise that U.S. officials described as a possible rehearsal for a strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.

Gen. Hossein Salami, the Revolutionary Guards air force commander, said Iran's war games this week _ code-named "Noble Prophet" _ "demonstrate our resolve and might against enemies who in recent weeks have threatened Iran with harsh language," state TV reported.

"Hundreds and maybe thousands of missiles are ready to be fired at specified targets," he said. "A small part of our defense options was put on display for the world today. Our real reaction against enemy threats will be quicker and stronger."

The West needs to "assess Iran's might accurately," he added.

State TV aired footage of at least six missiles being fired simultaneously, and said the barrage included a new version of the Shahab-3 missile, which officials have said has a range of 1,250 miles and is armed with a 1-ton conventional warhead. That would put Israel, Turkey, the Arabian peninsula, Afghanistan and Pakistan within striking distance. The TV report did not say whether the test took place near the Hormuz strait.

The U.S. Defense Department said it was studying the test to determine exactly what was launched and what it shows about Tehran's missile capabilities.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice called Wednesday's tests "evidence that the missile threat is not an imaginary one."

"Those who say that there is no Iranian missile threat against which we should build a missile defense system perhaps ought to talk to the Iranians about their claims," Rice said while traveling in Sofia, Bulgaria.

On Tuesday, Rice and Czech counterpart Karel Schwarzenberg signed a deal allowing the U.S. to base a missile defense shield in the Czech Republic.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the test bolsters the U.S. argument that Tehran is a threat and a missile defense system is needed in Europe.

A White House spokesman called the tests "completely inconsistent with Iran's obligations to the world" and said they further isolate the country.

Iran should "refrain from further missile tests if they truly seek to gain the trust of the world," said Gordon Johndroe, spokesman for the National Security Council, speaking from Japan where President Bush is attending the Group of Eight summit.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Iran's missile tests highlight the need for direct diplomacy as well as tougher threats of economic sanctions and strong incentives to persuade Tehran to change its behavior.

John McCain, the Republican seeking the presidency, said the tests demonstrate a need for effective missile defense, including missile defense in Europe and the defense system the U.S. plans with the Czech Republic and Poland. Oil prices rose Wednesday on news of the tests, along with a U.S. government report showing crude stockpiles fell more than expected. Light, sweet crude for August delivery rose $1.50 to $137.54 a barrel in early afternoon trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Israeli defense officials said there were no major surprises in the latest Iranian missile tests. The officials said they appeared to be more of an exercise in psychological warfare than a breakthrough in military technology.

"Israel does not desire hostility and conflict with Iran," Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said. "But it is clear that the Iranian nuclear program and the Iranian ballistic missile program is a matter of grave concern."

The test could also be aimed to show the West there cannot be a military solution to the standoff with Iran over its nuclear ambitions. Iran denies U.S. accusations it seeks to build nuclear weapons, and earlier this week it sent a response to a Western package of economic incentives aimed at pushing it to halt uranium enrichment. EU officials have said they are still evaluating the response, but Tehran has insisted it will not suspend enrichment.

Iranian leaders have said they don't believe the U.S. or Israel will attack, citing U.S. problems in Iraq and the effect on already soaring oil prices. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday called the idea of an attack a "funny joke."

But at the same, Iran has been more vocal in warning of the fallout of any U.S. or Israeli strike.

The semi-official Fars news agency, which is believed to be close to the Revolutionary Guards, reported details on the missiles tested Wednesday, saying they included a "newly upgraded" Shahab-3, first tested in its longest-range version in 2004.

The Shehab-3 tested Wednesday has been designed with a "cluster" warhead, that allows it to release multiple bombs over a wider area, Fars said, without elaborating. It also boasts a more accurate navigational system that allows a control room to bring the missile back on route if it strays or destroy it if it goes too far off course, it said.

The other missiles tested included the Zelzal, versions of which have a range of 130-185 miles, and the Fateh, with a range of 105 miles.

Since when is having a conventional missile arsenal newsworthy?

Anybody?

We have thousands of nukes not only on our soil, but all around the world, and zooming around in subs that nobody can track but us. You better believe there's a few in the gulf. So-the-hell-what if Iran wants to test their capability?

We invaded the country next door and have been threatening them constantly. How would we act if Russia invaded Mexico and criticized us for test firing our own missiles inside our own borders? These people are hypocritical fools, and so we, to the world.

This illustrates that the Iranians aren't good strategists - unless they _want_ to be attacked.

The LAST thing they should be doing right now is giving Junior the slightest excuse for military action.

We're all going to need some good luck here.

It is obvious that Iran is "showing" their strength in the face of Israel "showing" theirs and in the face of Bushco neo-cons who are just dying to pull the trigger so that we have a continuance of "Bring Em On" that would make the illusion that Iraq/Iran is a real immediate threat to American security.

Tom Delay's appearance yesterday on MSNBC practically endorsing an attack immediately is not just his opinion but the opinion of any neo-con who knows that without scare tactics they will lose the November election. I mean as jaded as I am I still find it hilarious that all this Israel preparedness and rhetoric concerning Iran comes at a time when McSame has lost his entire footing in his campaign to continue the Bush doctrine of war, scare, war, business, war, nukes, spying, rendition, carrying guns at Disneyword, and giving telecoms the freedom to spy on our grandmothers because Cheney thinks we are all deep down secret Al-Qaeda members.

As comments have alluded to..any attack by Iran is akin to suicide and Ammadinthehead is nuts but he ain't that nuts.

That long range missle (with or without a nuke attached ) heading to Israel would be a suicide shot for Iran.

Israel conducted military exercises in the Mediterranean last month - including mid-air refuelling - while its deputy PM Shaul Mofaz went on record saying that striking Iran was "unavoidable".

But nobody called that a provocation.

The US has suggested that its missiles located in Poland and Czech Republic are aimed at Iran.

But nobody is outraged at the not-so-thinly-veiled hostility towards a sovereign country.

Iran is threatened with ostracism, sanctions and military action for going ahead with a nuclear programme it's entitled to develop under the NPT treaty.

But nobody develops a backbone and break ranks with the bullying squad.

Iran tests missiles WITHIN its territory - everybody gets their knickers in a twist.

The hypocrisy is astounding.

Doesn't Iran understand that the USA is the only country allowed to fire illegal weapons of mass destruction in this world? Nobody else is allowed to defend themselves from out illegal and immoral regime change policies.

Is it me, or is this incredibly coincidental? I ran has tested missiles before. This coincides nicely with Iraq's president Maliki saying that they want us out of Iraq. Maliki wants us out, so the need to step up an attack on Iran is more neccessary than ever before, in the neo-con's warped way of looking at middle-eastern diplomacy. (which is no diplomacy at all) This, "shoot first and ask questions later," BS has to stop.

Oh well, the Great Democratic experiment lasted at least 200 years, before turning into a despotic state.

What, like the real world where incumbent party candidates maybe oughtn't to 'joke' about bombing someone the same week Israel threatens to attack someone?

Not that I have any particular love for Iran, but that's what *happens* when you're dumb enough to joke and sing about *bombing* someone amid saber-rattling. Someone might show their teeth and rattle back.

Unless there's some part of McCain's vast 'experience' that means that's a good idea if picking a fight isn't what you have in mind.

Maybe if we'd *been* talking more there wouldn't be this situation to have to *worry* about 'making go away.'

Iran is doing the right thing. If an aggressor is pointing at you, you point back. It sends a clean message to the world that US policy is not acceptable.

Where was the "uproar" when Israel had recent war games with armed jets flying a koh-inkie-dink distance needed to attack Iran complete with mid-air refueling???

Just maybe the Iranians who have NEVER attacked another nation ('cept a border war with Iraq - started by Sue-damn . . .) decided to respond to Israeli and US saber rattling . . .

But the thing is Israel has bigger, better guns and more of them. If Iran wants to have their butts handed to them, be my guest.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:13 AM on 07/10/2008

Maybe Israel do have bigger weapons like Nukes, but are they stupid enough to open that pandoras box.
Either way, Iranian views on the street say that, they may have dissagreements with their own Government, but the moment you bomb them, they WILL become one, and will form the biggest Jihad movent on earth. They will send 250,000 desert trained revolutionary Guards out to kill any american, co-ilition or Isreali. accompanied by 75,000,000 pissed of Iranians.
You better bomb them all, because they do have more advanced naval torpedos and it takes only a handfull of bio loaded weapons to kill 75% of Isreal.
Dont forget too, that Russia and China can be dragged into this, Even though Iran does not believe in the bomb, an attack will escillate them towards one. Oil prices will double immediately, US finances will crash and bankers will seek to push for a world war as would the military industial complex. Bush would instigate the draft, as per plan and initiate police state laws as already put in place.
So go ahead and be stupid, or kick these mad leaders out and TRADE like other diplomatic countries.

Interesting posts. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is as deceitful as they come. He's a liar and a very nervous angry manipulator, and of course he's not alone in that regard. It's too bad the power centers of the world still relate on this level. Humanity has not yet been able to resolve conflict without destruction and violence.

After Iran, the last thing this country needs is a long drawn out confrontation with another angry, backward, out of control middle eastern country. How many more trillions do we need to spend and how many more young peoples lives does the power elite want to ruin.

I say, take the war chest, find alternatives to oil and kiss the Middle East good bye!

Are we so disillusioned as a nation that we can't see things in anything other than black and white? It's not 'invade all of the middle east and spread democracy at the point of a gun(nuke?)' or 'turn tail and hide in our borders'.

Why is it so inconceivable as a nation to engage other nations based on good faith. Yes, we'll get double crossed, yes we won't always get what we want, but I guarantee you terrorism would strongly decline if the United States didn't constantly aggressively posture towards the middle east and demand everything. It only servers to fuel the ethnic, cultural, economic and religious divide.

Is this what our foreign policy has degraded to? Us vs them? How can this possibly turn out well?

Americans are a pretty dumbed down ethnocentric bunch. Considering most American understand the World based on the stupidity of Cable News, is it any wonder ?

Needless to say, without War, there can be no War profitiering. Ultimately, that is the goal... Profit. America is a Miltiary Industrial Complex... the most violent death machine the World has ever known. So no - for America "good faith' is not an option. Bomb, bomb, bomb and spread lies to the populace.

Its disgusting, but thats what happens when your President is a War Criminal.

"Backward, out of control middle eastern country." As opposed to what? Progressive U.S.A? Take a critical examination of merely the last twenty tears of this country's foreign diplomacy, social policy, and overall approach to the theory of democracy. Xenophobia and cognitive disconnect only retards "America" and yourself.

I love how our country now thinks we have the right to start telling other countries whether they can fire missiles or not....while we threaten to attack him, which was the catalyst for them firing them in the first place.

...after a history in which we overthrew their government in 1953 for British oil companies and supported a dictator who killed thousands of Iranians and, after they finally threw off that dictator, we armed Saddam Hussein for a war against them that cost as many as 4 million lives... I love it! Israel conducts war games with Iran as the clear target, the US parks carriers in the Gulf and flatly states that it's a show of strength....but when Iran lets us know that they aren't going to roll over like Saddam Hussein, all of a sudden it's a problem.
Fortunately for the region - and the world - Iran hasn't "unsigned" the Non-Proliferation Treaty like Bush "unsigned" the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with Russia in 2001,or taken up a "Bush Doctrine" of pre-emption and taken out Israel's Dimona reactor, or started taking out either US troops in Iraq or any of the new bases being built there...
YET.
