TEHRAN, Iran — Iran test-fired nine missiles Wednesday, including ones capable of hitting Israel, making a dramatic show of its readiness to strike back if the United States or Israel attacks it over its nuclear program.

The launches sparked strong U.S. criticism and a jump in oil prices _ underlining fears Iran might seal off the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf waterway through which 40 percent of the world's crude passes, if military conflict does break out.

The tests of the long- and medium-range missiles did not appear to mark a significant advance in Iran's missile capability _ similar ones have been tested previously. But the timing and location were clearly aimed to send a message, coming as Iran has sharply stepped up the tone of its warnings of retaliation if attacked. This week, a top official of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, Ali Shirazi, warned Tel Aviv would be "set on fire" in any Iranian retaliation.

The tests took place amid a military exercise that Iran has been conducting in the Hormuz strait, where Tehran has threatened to block oil traffic in response to any U.S. or Israeli military action.

Iran has long warned it would strike back for any attack against it. But it has sharpened its rhetoric since Israel's military sent warplanes over the eastern Mediterranean in June for a large military exercise that U.S. officials described as a possible rehearsal for a strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.

Gen. Hossein Salami, the Revolutionary Guards air force commander, said Iran's war games this week _ code-named "Noble Prophet" _ "demonstrate our resolve and might against enemies who in recent weeks have threatened Iran with harsh language," state TV reported.

"Hundreds and maybe thousands of missiles are ready to be fired at specified targets," he said. "A small part of our defense options was put on display for the world today. Our real reaction against enemy threats will be quicker and stronger."

The West needs to "assess Iran's might accurately," he added.

State TV aired footage of at least six missiles being fired simultaneously, and said the barrage included a new version of the Shahab-3 missile, which officials have said has a range of 1,250 miles and is armed with a 1-ton conventional warhead. That would put Israel, Turkey, the Arabian peninsula, Afghanistan and Pakistan within striking distance. The TV report did not say whether the test took place near the Hormuz strait.

The U.S. Defense Department said it was studying the test to determine exactly what was launched and what it shows about Tehran's missile capabilities.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice called Wednesday's tests "evidence that the missile threat is not an imaginary one."

"Those who say that there is no Iranian missile threat against which we should build a missile defense system perhaps ought to talk to the Iranians about their claims," Rice said while traveling in Sofia, Bulgaria.

On Tuesday, Rice and Czech counterpart Karel Schwarzenberg signed a deal allowing the U.S. to base a missile defense shield in the Czech Republic.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the test bolsters the U.S. argument that Tehran is a threat and a missile defense system is needed in Europe.

A White House spokesman called the tests "completely inconsistent with Iran's obligations to the world" and said they further isolate the country.

Iran should "refrain from further missile tests if they truly seek to gain the trust of the world," said Gordon Johndroe, spokesman for the National Security Council, speaking from Japan where President Bush is attending the Group of Eight summit.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Iran's missile tests highlight the need for direct diplomacy as well as tougher threats of economic sanctions and strong incentives to persuade Tehran to change its behavior.

John McCain, the Republican seeking the presidency, said the tests demonstrate a need for effective missile defense, including missile defense in Europe and the defense system the U.S. plans with the Czech Republic and Poland. Oil prices rose Wednesday on news of the tests, along with a U.S. government report showing crude stockpiles fell more than expected. Light, sweet crude for August delivery rose $1.50 to $137.54 a barrel in early afternoon trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Israeli defense officials said there were no major surprises in the latest Iranian missile tests. The officials said they appeared to be more of an exercise in psychological warfare than a breakthrough in military technology.

"Israel does not desire hostility and conflict with Iran," Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said. "But it is clear that the Iranian nuclear program and the Iranian ballistic missile program is a matter of grave concern."

The test could also be aimed to show the West there cannot be a military solution to the standoff with Iran over its nuclear ambitions. Iran denies U.S. accusations it seeks to build nuclear weapons, and earlier this week it sent a response to a Western package of economic incentives aimed at pushing it to halt uranium enrichment. EU officials have said they are still evaluating the response, but Tehran has insisted it will not suspend enrichment.

Iranian leaders have said they don't believe the U.S. or Israel will attack, citing U.S. problems in Iraq and the effect on already soaring oil prices. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday called the idea of an attack a "funny joke."

But at the same, Iran has been more vocal in warning of the fallout of any U.S. or Israeli strike.

The semi-official Fars news agency, which is believed to be close to the Revolutionary Guards, reported details on the missiles tested Wednesday, saying they included a "newly upgraded" Shahab-3, first tested in its longest-range version in 2004.

The Shehab-3 tested Wednesday has been designed with a "cluster" warhead, that allows it to release multiple bombs over a wider area, Fars said, without elaborating. It also boasts a more accurate navigational system that allows a control room to bring the missile back on route if it strays or destroy it if it goes too far off course, it said.

The other missiles tested included the Zelzal, versions of which have a range of 130-185 miles, and the Fateh, with a range of 105 miles.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Cleric leadership headed by Supreme Leader Ayatolla Seyyed Ali Khamene'I, as well as Mohammed Ali Jafariof commander of the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution:

Tyrranical behavior only serves to unify a nation, not around a political candidate, but around the idea of quelling a tyrannical regime. You do not want such cohesion by average Americans around the idea that your country is an enemy that needs to be dealt with. It is best to mind the business of insuring Iran, as a nation of good and decent people, is proseprous, safe, and towards peace with the world not provocation and war.

That said, one can understand taking a position of proactive defense against the only nation to ever drop the atom bomb, the nation that moved over 100,000 troops next door in an illegal, preemptive, unilateral invasion of Iraq, the nation that put you and other nations on a list defining points on an “Axis of Evil”, the nation that is reported to be operating in-country, the nation that has an oil dependency problem, and the nation that has a hypocrisy strewn history regarding its treatment of other nations/people and its hypocritical use of the words fantical, savage, and uncivilized as it relates to other people. You have every right to test your defenses and to display your deterrents. As one who has seen many bullies, this is an acceptable approach.

Be careful though of tyranical misteps creating American cohesion!

I wrote it the way that I did not in any hope that they do, but with knowledge that there are those amongst us who find it difficult to ever say anything untoward about America. The statement you refer to was to put my later statement in context. I am not for tyranny, no matter the practitioner. Whether they read it or not, it does not matter. I put the thought out that I wanted to and that was the point. Who reads it is the stuff of other people’s choices and slants and not the stuff of he who comments, out of compulsion I actually despise. That is a whole other conversation though.

In the spirit of humor and the laughter that comes from it, yes, let us hope they do read the Huffington Post and decide to take heed, based not on my comments but the many here that say America is not Bush, do not hold him against us (at least some of us), but America is not to be played with either. AMerica is mostly decent people just trying to live good lives, do not ever threaten that.

nick1936,

Yes, they are still old school - preparing for the eventuality of being attacked. After all, the US and Israel have let it be known that in no uncertain terns that they might attack Iran.

Iran is doing the sane and realistic thing of defining a defense that one must consider if they
are to be attacked. For that they should be commended.

On th eother hand,
Using the US policy of pre-emptive war, the Iranians would be justified in attacking first.
The News has plenty of proof that plans have been made, black ops are Iran, etc.
Targets?
1. Fifth Fleet
2. Israel
3. American troops in Iraq as well as their bases.

"Is Iran rational?" Well lets see:
* a country that invaded their neighbor under false pretenses regularly makes similar false accusations against them
* that same country currently is waging a covert war on their border and talks about "preparing the battlefield" for them (see Sy Hersh's recent article in the New Yorker)
* that same country refuses to talk to them and regularly says that it won't rule out attacking them

So in response they prepare their military for an attack and demonstrate to their enemy that they have the capability to defend themselves. Sounds pretty f*ing rational to me.

Of course Iran is going to taunt us. They see that the American people do NOT support the FAILED policies of the FAILURES in the Bu$h Administration; they see the failure of the US to be successful in either Afghanistan and Iraq; and they know there will be a regime change in 6 months when the new President (sen. O) takes office.

So they yank Bu$h's chain and the 28%ers all hitch up their belts and talk macho. And once again Bu$h looks like the fool he is and Mc Bu$h is still lost in the bus depot.

It is always Israel's fault! "Israel is no real democracy, but Hamas was duly elected by the people." Great logic. Of course in your world Iran is a true democracy. Its anti Israel position helps its cause but ask yourself, what has it really done for the average Palestinian? Iran's only goal is to be the power broker in the ME. By the way when you speak of apartheid ask why 205 of Israel is Arab and what happened to of the Jews who lived in Muslim countries, and most Christians and non Muslims living in those countires including Gaza and the West Bank. I am sure you will find the intolerance by the Muslim majority forced them to leave or suffer.

Iran has every right to test their missles. From my knowledge, they are a country who has not attacked anybody . The US has done things to them like overthrowing their elected leader in the 1950's and installing the Shah, etc . With the Bush regimes rhetoric towards them ,would you not be paranoid of us and Israel? And speaking of Israel: why is Israel allowed to have approx 200 WMD? Why is Israel always the so-called "victim"? Israel is no real democracy. Their policies are very apartheid towards the Palestinians. And speaking of the "militant"Hamas. Hamas was duly elected by the people probably because they are fed up with the horrible conditions in which they live; under years and years of occupation. Again, who are we and Israel to persecute the Palestinian people for voting for who they want. Isn't that what democracy is about?

Although I am against these weapons, I think the playing field has finally been leveled in that region.
Israel has acted as the mini superpower over there, and has been bullying and taking matters into their own hands, just like the US. Now perhaps they will tread a little more softly, and begin to respect, and even be willing to negotiate peace.

I do not blame Iran for wanting to reach this status. If my neighbor constantly threatened me and my family with weapons, and bullied us for years, I would want to level the playing field, by arming myself too.

The US also better come down from their high horse, and be more cooperative. I also wonder what our dear Secretary of State on Blahniks are doing, whilst these developments keep going on. Someone should count the number of flights she has taken to gallivant around the world, and hold her accountable for her failures.

Asking if Iran is rational is a stunning example of the sort of paranoid projection that has been Middle East foreign policy for the last 8 years.
The US has illegally invaded 2 countries, killed over a million people, tortured and spread misery and destruction in its wake.
Iran has never threatened no one and hasn't invaded anyone in the last 250 years. Meanwhile Bush has threatened to invade Iran and its neighbors and is running secret operations inside Iran's borders.
Iran's response is entirely rational. It's the rationality of the US that is in question.
The press are complicit in promoting the agenda of a handful of madmen and suggesting their ravings are based on reason.

I'll try this again! If the Bu$h/Israeli administrations believe that they can stop Iran's nuclear energy proliferation by bombing with powerful air strikes ... those strikes had better be on target! If they miss as miserably as in the past and kill thousands of Iranian innocents ... well, that's just unacceptable!! What then? Occupation, again! That Iranian Revolutionary Guard is no push over (I don't believe) ... the fight on the ground is the real thing! On the ground!

How barbarous is this!?

Gladys, the only reason the US is going to go into Iran is because it wants to ensure that the Oil flows thru us. The Iranian Revolutionary guard is this years Republican guard. We see their training vids and hear about how ferocious they are and how deadly. When the fighting starts Iran like Iraq will be as tough as cotton candy.
