** UPDATES BELOW: OBAMA STATEMENT, VIDEO **

CNN reports:

The Rev. Jesse Jackson issued an apology to Barack Obama Wednesday for making what he called a "crude and hurtful" remark about the Illinois senator's recent comments directed toward some members of the black community.

According to Jackson, a Fox News microphone picked up comments he meant to deliver privately that seemed to disparage the presumptive Democratic nominee for appearing to lecture the black community on morality.

Jackson didn't elaborate on the context of his remarks, except to say he was trying to explain that Obama was hurting his relationship with black voters by recently conducting "moral" lectures at African-American churches.

Jackson's apology came a few hours before Fox News planned to air the remarks.

Speaking to CNN Wednesday, Jackson said he feels "very distressed" over the comments.

Story continues below

"This is a sound bite in a broader conversation about urban policy and racial disparities. I feel very distressed because I'm supportive of this campaign and with the senator, what he has done and is doing," he said. "I said he comes down as speaking down to black people. The moral message must be a much broader message. What we need really is racial justice and urban policy and jobs and health care. That's a range of issues on the menu.

"Then I said something I regret was crude. It was very private. And very much a sound bite," he also said.

More details from Clarence Page on The Swamp:

Well, Swamp fans, as Jackson explained to me by telephone, his remarks occurred during an off-air moment during a Fox New Channel interview that aired Sunday.

Jackson didn't realize that the mics were still "hot," as in turned on and recording when he made a few off-the-cuff remarks about Obama's faith-based programs.

Bill O'Reilly has the story and plans to report it on his Fox program, "The O'Reilly Factor" tonight.

Even though O'Reilly has booked me and another guest to respond to the video, he is withholding a full transcript or recording of Jackson's remarks even from me until the program airs.

So far I have only been told by a producer that Jackson criticizes Obama's proposed faith-based programs for "talking down to black people."

And (A warning here to younger or more sensitive readers) Jackson also says something about how the senator was "going to get his (twin objects of male anatomy) cut off."

Jackson, who recalled his remark as, "The senator is cutting off his you-know-what with black people," expressed deep regrets for saying it, even in what he thought was a "private conversation."

"I want to be clear," Jackson said. "My support for Barack Obama is unequivocal. I apologize to Barack and the Obama campaign for my crude and hurtful comments."

Update: Video of Jesse Jackson's remark:

Jackson apologized for his statement on CNN:

Update: A statement from the Obama campaign: "As someone who grew up without a father in the home, Senator Obama has spoken and written for many years about the issue of parental responsibility, including the importance of fathers participating in their children's lives. He also discusses our responsibility as a society to provide jobs, justice, and opportunity for all. He will continue to speak out about our responsibilities to ourselves and each other, and he of course accepts Reverend Jackson's apology," said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton.

And a very harsh statement from Jackson's son, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.:

I'm deeply outraged and disappointed in Reverend Jackson's reckless statements about Senator Barack Obama. His divisive and demeaning comments about the presumptive Democratic nominee -- and I believe the next president of the United States -- contradict his inspiring and courageous career.

Instead of tearing others down, Barack Obama wants to build the country up and bring people together so that we can move forward, together -- as one nation. The remarks like those uttered on Fox by Reverend Jackson do not advance the campaign's cause of building a more perfect Union.

Reverend Jackson is my dad and I'll always love him. He should know how hard that I've worked for the last year and a half as a national co-chair of Barack Obama's presidential campaign. So, I thoroughly reject and repudiate his ugly rhetoric. He should keep hope alive and any personal attacks and insults to himself.

If these remarks were to have been said by any Caucasion, Hispanic or Asian person they would have lost their job or fired from any position immediately! They would be tarred and feathered by the press endlessly for weeks. Yet , Mr Hopelessness and feel sorry for yourselves Jackson gets off the hook by saying I am sorry! It stinks
This is the same person that said the "N" word should be banned from the English language - How repulsive!
This is so typical of religion and politics where the exact people claiming moral superiority are the people that do the crime from the beginning.
Jackson, you and Brother Sharpton should go get real jobs instead of fleecing the Black community any longer.
You have made a living from Keeping the Black community hostage to your whimes, and self interests.
Responsibilty of one's action is in and should always be in.
The philosophy of blame, race baiting is over here in the USA.

O'Reilly twice called Obama a civil rights leader. Since when is Barrak Obama a civil rights leader? I was under the impression that he was running for president. I don't seem to recall hearing anything about his civil rights activism or his place in any movement as a leader ala Jackson, Sharpton, King, etc. He is a politician. In the mind of Bill O'Reilly, Obama is a civil rights leader merely by virtue of the fact that he is a successful, black politician.

And underlying all this is the worn out attempt at labeling Obama as an activist for minority causes, with the innuendo being that he will subjugate the interest of white people. I wouldn't be surprised to hear this "civil rights leader" label become part of the media vernacular.

Overreacting? Maybe... but probably not. These bastards are sneaky.

When you stand in front of your community / race and say enough you become a defacto civil rights leader, and I think Obama if nothing else wears that mantle.

Rev. Jackson's candid comments are a disappointment, since they would seem to reflect his true opinions.. They are not the comments that one would expect from a reverend in any setting. Added to his extramarital affairs from a few years ago, this would seem to indicate a reverend in spiritual trouble.

Most Blacks have always looked at Jesse Jackson as an opportunist and are not surprised at his negative diatribe aganist Barack Obama. You Whites are the ones that have always viewed him as our spokes person. Jesse is no different from any user when they are at the end of their time. Why do you think Bush is dancing as fast as he is and trashing Congress, when he knows that he stacked the deck and made it impossible for them to accomplish very much while he is still in office.
Speaking of Jesse, I must say not all of the injustice he brought to the fore-front was without warrant so this by no way give some Whites a reprieve.

Retired and Black....

On radio I heard a comment where it was pointed out 4% of African-Americans said Jesse Jackson spoke for them. FOUR PERCENT.

Truthfully, it was the 'white liberal media' that annointed Jackson and made him thee spokesman for Black America.

I have criticized Jackson for his remarks which he should have never made, but now I wonder what Faux news has to gain by dragging this whole thing out.........distraction? that's what they are good at. And it sure helps that it centers around race. Time to move along.

I say Jesse Jackson got what he deserved. He should have known not to ever go on Funks News in the first place. Funks News is nothing but trouble.

Can I make a suggestion......................Please everybody just stop posting about the comment. Fox and O'reilly know what they were doing. This would have never seen the light of day if it was a white guy caught on tape. This isa dstraction that we don't need. Let's keep our eye on the prize. This too shall pass. Keep it moving.

I agree. The real story should be Fox spies on it's guests for information it can later use against them.

I'm sure this pales in comparison to what O'reilly and others say "off the air".

I wish someone would correct "sound bite" - it should be "sound byte" as in 8 bits make a byte. Meaning a collection of sound bits (which might not make sense) make up a sound byte (which is small, but is a quantum of information that is ingestible).

Most people however, including Jackson when he's using it, probably thinks its 'bite' -- as in he's taking a bite sized morsel of sound.

But it should be corrected.

Its take a bite out of crime, but it is a sound byte.

No. It's soundbite, or more properly, sound bite. It has nothing to do with bits or bytes. It is indeed used as reference to a chunk, morsel, chewed-off portion of a whole. You'll have a very difficult time finding sound byte in a dictionary.

Whoa there, lil' guy. Step down off that high horse and come meet the real world. You know, the one where people aren't so uptight and arrogant? And if you insist on staying up there, consider the fact that your correction -- although seemingly logical -- is for naught since it is wholly incorrect. So, check a dictionary or re-read your etymology text to refresh your knowledge. Or, hey, do a quick Google search! Easy enough, right? Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soundbite (Oh, and search for the word 'byte' for that extra big piece of humble pie).

Can we finally bid adieu to Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Jerry Springer from the Democratic party?

Actually, Al Sharpton is very relevant to the future of civil rights in this country. I'm not accusing you of this, but too many people can't get past the visual of a Perm wearing AA Male. To those I say take a step back, rid yourself of all preconceived notions of what you think Sharpton is about, and just listen to the guy. There's a chance you'll recognize everything that he has stood for and you'll also realize that he is a true patriot, not just for AA, but for all Americans.

As for JJ, well that's a different story.

I quit listening to Sharpton after Tawana Brawley. Not because he backed her initially, but because he was apparently more interested in getting his face on TV than in finding out what had actually happened. And despite all evidence to the contrary, he has refused to admit that (a) the girl lied, and (b) he accused, publicly and frequently, innocent men of a horrible crime. And in this case, his actions were based entirely on the race of the people involved. He no longer has any credibility to me.

In fairrness to Al Sharpton, he fights against injustices, such as the Sean Bell & The Jena 6 cases. So, Sharpton is still relevent. Jesse Jackson continues w/ the victimhood crap. He is a hypocrite. It's a shame what fame and power does to some people.

Jessie Jackson, your absolute ignorance is showing. You no longer represent anything, except yourself. You are an embarassment to the African-American community. Live with the outcome of this stupidity. And yes, I, am an African-American woman; from the "old school". You, and the others like you, get the hell out of the way because we are coming thru.
